Ok, I'm trying to jailbreak using redsn0w but the 3.0 restore firmware I downloaded keeps showing up as a .zip file and now as a .ipsw so redsn0w doesn't actually recognize it.

Any ideas on what I can do would be really appreciated

Ok, just found a solution in case someone has a similar problem:

You seem to have downloaded the correct iPhone OS firmware 3.0 .ipsw file but your Windows identifies it as a “.Zip” folder for extraction:

Some people have encountered this problem when downloading .ipsw file from Apple only to find it as an extraction(.zip) folder with a bunch files. To get around this issue:

1. Go to “My Computer” in Windows.

2. Press “Alt” button on the keyboard and then select “Tools” from the file menu and then click on “Folder options…”.

3. In “Folder Options”, switch to “View” tab and uncheck “Hide extensions for unknown file types” and then click ok.

4. Now simply go to the folder which contains that “.ipsw” file. You will notice that the extension for that file will now be reading as “.ipsw.zip”. Rename this file by removing the “.zip” extension from the end of the file so that the extension for the file becomes “.ipsw” only. Example: iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw

Windows should now be able to read the file as valid “.ipsw” file for iTunes.

Yes, yes tethering so I apologise for bringing it up - but we know how quick VC will be for us (VC call center told me to phone Apple yesterday, riiiiiight) - I know this has been talked about over and over on MyBB but just thought I'd see if anyone had tried the tethering option from here : http://justanotheriphoneblog.com/wo...mple-hack-to-enable-tethering-on-iphone-os-30 - which links through to http://help.benm.at/help.php
Sorry if it was mentioned before but I waded back in the posts and couldn't see this attempt.
Q: Can you delete the mobileconfig if you find that it doesn't work and other things go wrong?

u can supposedly delete it, but it appears to still hang around, this mobileconfig is exactly the same as the other one posted, and it's not an actual solution, as soon as you enter mms settings you're buggered again

first IM push apps released

Beejive looks great, but i'm not sure if i want to pay 10us$ for the thing... meebo was going to be free, and im+ is only 6us$

also, beejive doesn't support skype IM, or any kind of voip for that matter....

I have just spoken to a brain surgeon by the name of Sonny (or is it Sunny?) who works as a Vodacom call agent. I guess the thrill of being able to lie to people on a daily basis holds more appeal than being up to your elbows in frontal lobes but I digress...

He told me that the Version 3.0 of the Apple iPhone software does NOT support either MMS or tethering, but that the next verison will. I told him that, with respect, he was talking crap. He then countered with 'We've received offical notice from Apple'.

Faced with the prospect of dealing with bare faced lies I mentioned that he might want to get internet access because I'd be posting this on this forum and hung up.

They're a bunch of idiots.. how come my MMS works? Give me his number so that I can send him an MMS from my iPhone.

I would love to be able to do that - I called 155 and followed the voice prompts. Eventually the lady on the line had to transfer me through to this 'expert'.

Firstly:
ANy way of getting Cydia or another similar app on an iPhone without jailbreaking?

Buddy.. .this in NOT ok.

The information you seek is readily available all over the www there is NO need to get excited and start demanding info in this thread where people are dealing with issues far more complicated than your basic ignorance.

Secondly:
Alleged forumite: 'VodacomData'.

I wanted to send a PM to draw his attention to my post requesting his feedback on the tethering issue but I cant seem to find any record of this username in the Members List - am I toatlly lost/confused here?
Anyone had any contact with this person?
