Did they actually write their number on the SIM? To my knowledge, only SIM numbers or printed on the SIM and not the actual phone number...
Well, seems like you might have scored an iPhone (if it doesn't get blacklisted, that is) ;)

On the sim, the actual number is printed. I called and sms'd but nothing.
Dont know what else to do. Too scared to put in my sim but have made a statement so....just waiting. Send another sms with a delivery report to contact me urgently.

Hmmm... might look like the cell number but I doubt it is. Rather give that number to the network and tell them you got it off the SIM card - see if they can give you the real number?

just a thought, has anyone ever evaluated the battery life of a jailbroken 3G 3.0 to that of one which isnt jailbroken? And I say the iphone 3G cos I know the 2G has a much better battery life!

I need the APN, username and password so i can use cellular data on my iphone from Vodacom

battery life issues on os 3.0 has been narrowed down to restoring from backup in stead of setting up as new phone after firmware restore

Great stuff. I did this last night. So will report back once I have tested.

I restored OS 3.0 and setup my 3G iphone as a new install.

I then jailbreaked with redsn0w and cydia. Will not be running ultrasnow etc as its not needed. I normally got 1.5 - 2 days worth of battery. Will see how it goes from here.

1.5 - 2 days is normal battery usage

I recently picked up an iPhone 3GS while on holiday in the USA (a friend bought it off-contract to get around AT&T nonsense - so it is possible).

I have tried using Redsn0w and Ultrasn0w in Cydia to jailbreak and unlock it, but my 3G aint working. I'm on MTN MyChoice Topup and I have a data bundle loaded onto my account.

If I reset the phone with 3G set to ON, it sort of sees 3G for a second, but with no signal-bars (even though my area has good 3G coverage - I've checked on another phone). After a second, the signal then drops down to Edge and stays that way. I can browse internet fine, tether my phone to my computer and browse internet there and generally everything works ok. I just can't get 3G to work. I can make calls too btw.

I have tried the exact same procedure on 3 different iPhones (all 3GS's) and 3 different SIM cards all with the same results.

Anyone else have any issues like this? Anyone else have an iPhone 3GS working on MTN-3G in SA? Please tell me your secret.

I have not had a chance to try a Vodacom SIM card yet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
K

first of all, you didn't get around the nonsense, your phone is network locked to AT&T, despite the workarounds the dev team provide, you'll probably be stuck on the current firmware permanently if you want to retain the ability to use the phone on mtn or vodacom

restore firmware with itunes
jailbreak and activate with redsn0w 0.9
connect the phone to a wifi network, and run cydia on the phone
follow steps to install ultrasn0w (which will unlock your phone)
settings ->general -> reset -> reset network settings

phone should be ok for now

your haste has caused you the following issues:
you will most likely not be able to use push notifications on your phone, ever
you will very likely not be able to upgrade to any new firmware, as you'll permanently loose the ability to network unlock your phone if you do

would have been better to wait for 3Gs to release in SA, they are not network locked here

Theron, are you sure about that. I just had a friend order one in the states off ebay for about 4500 rand and it will be here in a month. I thought that the dev team had the network unlock and all the other stuff working just like they did for the 2g & the 3g. Friends of mine in the states have unlocked them to use on Tmobile there.

some history for clarification:
the iPhone 2G unlock is different from the iPhone 3G and 3Gs unlock, in that, it exploits a hardware vulnerability to unlock the phone to any network, on 3G and 3Gs, the unlock happens in the software of the phone baseband (or modem for practical purposes), this however, can be prevented with further iPhone firmware updates, therefore, the unlock on 3G and 3Gs CANNOT be guaranteed, as apple has the ability to undo and prevent any developed unlock for the phone

jailbreaking again, is a different story, dev team has confirmed that, as long as you have the files required for the jailbreak (which you HAVE to get by restoring the 3Gs to 3.0 firmware before doing any kind of update on the phone), then the 3Gs will always be jailbreakable, however, once the 3Gs releases with 3.1 already installed, you're stuffed there, dev team might be able to develop a jailbreak, but again, not guaranteed

as for push notifications

apple owns the only sever cluster that enable push notifications, for the phone to access this server cluster, there are certain conditions, the most troublesome of which is, only when iTunes activates the phone (which can only be done with a valid sim if the phone is network locked), will the push server cluster allow access to that phone (it uses the phone's unique UDID, not the sim imei or phone number or any ohter ID), meaning, if iTunes does not activate the phone, no push for your app store apps

so again
3Gs bought in USA or any other network locked country:
can't use push notifications
can be completely disabled by any future firmware upgrade, turning it into a very expensive ipod touch

really guys, stay away from iPhones not bought here, one thing to be said about our government, they try to look after the consumers, no network operator in SA is allowed to sell a network locked phone, ALL phones have to be usable on any cellular network, meaning that, you will even be able to activate your iphone with an mtn sim (I activated an iPhone 3G with an mtn sim using iTunes when 3.0 was released, so I can confirm this)
