Great stuff. I did this last night. So will report back once I have tested.

I restored OS 3.0 and setup my 3G iphone as a new install.

I then jailbreaked with redsn0w and cydia. Will not be running ultrasnow etc as its not needed. I normally got 1.5 - 2 days worth of battery. Will see how it goes from here.

I've never really wanted to jailbreak my iPhone - been very happy with it how it is.
Anyone having problems with push notifications on their jailbroken iPhones?

jailbreaking doesn't affect push notifications, activating and unlocking a network locked iphone to use it on a non supported network does

only non SA iPhones will have issues with push

Before you get a tongue lashing from Aqua, the_rol & others I suggest you goto page 1 of this thread :D

jises the iPhone noobs

actually, the data apn's aren't listed on the first page, only the mms ones are, purely because it's so damn easy to find out what they are if you just try

if he had of picked up the phone, called VC, for free, they could tell him right away :)

ROTFLMAO SO TRUE :p

I must say tho to get the MTN apn I had to wait half a day for a 3rd tier technician to inform me  typical MTN

Thanx for clearing that up - glad I have an official Vodacom iPhone then :D

some history for clarification:
the iPhone 2G unlock is different from the iPhone 3G and 3Gs unlock, in that, it exploits a hardware vulnerability to unlock the phone to any network, on 3G and 3Gs, the unlock happens in the software of the phone baseband (or modem for practical purposes), this however, can be prevented with further iPhone firmware updates, therefore, the unlock on 3G and 3Gs CANNOT be guaranteed, as apple has the ability to undo and prevent any developed unlock for the phone

jailbreaking again, is a different story, dev team has confirmed that, as long as you have the files required for the jailbreak (which you HAVE to get by restoring the 3Gs to 3.0 firmware before doing any kind of update on the phone), then the 3Gs will always be jailbreakable, however, once the 3Gs releases with 3.1 already installed, you're stuffed there, dev team might be able to develop a jailbreak, but again, not guaranteed

as for push notifications

apple owns the only sever cluster that enable push notifications, for the phone to access this server cluster, there are certain conditions, the most troublesome of which is, only when iTunes activates the phone (which can only be done with a valid sim if the phone is network locked), will the push server cluster allow access to that phone (it uses the phone's unique UDID, not the sim imei or phone number or any ohter ID), meaning, if iTunes does not activate the phone, no push for your app store apps

so again
3Gs bought in USA or any other network locked country:
can't use push notifications
can be completely disabled by any future firmware upgrade, turning it into a very expensive ipod touch

really guys, stay away from iPhones not bought here, one thing to be said about our government, they try to look after the consumers, no network operator in SA is allowed to sell a network locked phone, ALL phones have to be usable on any cellular network, meaning that, you will even be able to activate your iphone with an mtn sim (I activated an iPhone 3G with an mtn sim using iTunes when 3.0 was released, so I can confirm this)

wow, thanks for the detailed explanation. I'll still take my chances with it as it is already done. But appreciate the heads up.

I have had a search through this thread and have not found what I was looking for...so...with asking a question and getting flamed :p here it is..

I am connecting to the wireless which goes through a proxy. Has anyone had any issues with cydia and proxy authentication. Proxy auth works in all other apps. Anyone got any tips?

I have to use a CNTLM proxy here at work as our proxy (Microsoft ISA) here requires authentication which the apps don't support. Some don't even adhere to the device proxy settings (grr Google !!!) so I'm guessing Cydia is the same.
So I run basically the CNTLM on my workstation and then point my iPhone proxy at that and then I bounce my workstation to our corporate proxy and I'm then OK. HTH

i have the same issue at work. SOMETIMES cydia requests the proxy username and pw, other times not. Best is to open something in safari, log in to your proxy, and then go back to cydia. AS long as you have an open wi-fi connection it should be valid.

on your phone settings, set the proxy to none (yes, i know this isn't true, just try it), then launch cydia again, it sort of worked for me, where cydia then pops up a proxy authentication box

i know cydia doesn't like proxies much though, better to just go via 3G

Eish I have the same dillemna:confused:

To Jailbreak or not to Jailbreak

If you want to use your iPhone to rec video and make memories - Cycorder
if you want to have the option to personalize your iPhone - Winterboarder
if you want get apps that are GREAT & FREE - Cydia
if you ever saw a cool video on YouTube & wanted to download it - Mx Tube
if you ever wanted a shortcuts to activate & deactivate WiFi BlueTooth etc - Sbsettings

The list is ENDLIST

Jailbreak your iPhone to use it to it's full potential. If you end up not liking it you can just restore via iTunes (but not very likely) :p

Thanks Theron

I will try restore and do a fresh unlock and see if that helps.

I am fully aware of the limitations of the network locks from AT&T, but I also trust that the hacking&cracking community will ALWAYS rise to the challenge as they have done every time in the past.

Personally I can live without push notifications for my apps if it means I get the other functionality from the iPhone 3GS.

I would've loved to have bought one here, but the price just does not make sense (My 32GB iPhone 3GS cost me R5400 - which is not bad considering what even a 32GB iPod Touch costs here). The newer 16GB iPhone 3GS cost almost HALF of what the old iPhone 3G costs here.

Basically the cost gain was/is worth the risk. I'm more interested to see if anyone else has encountered similar issues in SA with unlocking a 3GS.

I also understand that you guys must deal with a lot of noobs, but any help would be greatly appreciated as surely there must be other people trying to unlock a 3GS in SA.

I will let you know if a fresh restore works just in case it helps other people.

jailbreak

trust me, it's worth it, and it's very easy

very important: UNCHECK THE "ACTIVATE" option, only check "install cydia", it's this activation that messes with push notifications in a really bad way

that's the only thing you have to look out for when jailbreaking, the rest is a breeze

Yes activate is not for SA iPhones, we are unlocked it's only for countries that lock the iPhone.
