To those that know more than I do about unlocking:

As I understand it, the current unlocking tools (software based) just modify the iPhone's baseband (whatever that is). Isn't a permanent solution, that would survive future software upgrades, then just to overwrite the device's baseband with a copy taken from a VC iPhone?
 
WTF, back from Vodacare my broken ringer/silent switch isn't covered under warranty. So now I wait to hear how much it is and then try fight to get them to sort it out free. Meanwhile I'll collate links from people on the web where Apple has replaced it under warranty. I have maybe used the switch 6 times since I've had the phone. Not impressed.

Hey guys,

Hoping you can help me out. The MMS functionality seems to be a bit wonkey; I've used the standard apn, etc etc...but the thing seems to send and receive mms's intermittently. It goes to about 95%...gets stuck, sometimes sends through other times fails.

Any ideas? And no, I have not loaded any of the ipccs.

Any help will be appreciated.

Die eerste link (die een vir R600) lyk of die ou dit self doen. Sou voorstel dat jy dalk op BOB registreer en 'n vraag of 2 vra om sekerheid te kry.
 
MTN-3G on an iPhone 3GS - IT WORKS!!

Woohoo!!

I got it working (on all the other iPhone 3GS phones I unlocked on MTN too).

The Redsn0w and Ultrasn0w jailbreak is part of the problem I suspect, but they work fine enough. I followed the general instructions for jailbreaking and unlocking and everything except 3G worked fine.

To get 3G on MTN working once the Ultrasn0w unlock is finished I needed to reset network settings (like Roland said), BUT you also need to switch 3G off and then on again. I've had to do this almost every time I want 3G as it does not automatically go back to 3G from Edge even you have 3G enabled and have 3G reception (and want 3G to use the internet when opening Safari). I also find I need to load a webpage (Google is good check) to "force" a connection before using Cydia or the AppStore for example. If I don't force a connection, it usually drops back down to Edge (also like Roland said).

So - if you were thinking about bringing an iPhone 3GS in from the USA, I would say DO IT! My experience has shown that it works 99% (push notifications do not work as the phones are not legitimately activated) and the cost saving is HUGE. MMS works, tethering works. YAY!

dude, seriously, read the tutorial on iclarified, it's not that difficult?

do you have cydia on your phone? if yes, just follow the tutorial "how to unlock your iphone 3G"

if you don't have cydia, follow jailbreak tutorial then unlock tutorial

at least try it before you go looking for someone to do it for you, you can't break the phone

mms on the iphone is wonky, period....

either get swirly (on cydia), turn phone's mms of and use swirly for mms

or, turn 3G off, then mms works better on the phone, however, you won't be able to receive from anyone other than vodacom numbers

hope they fix it in 3.1

MMS on MTN works fine if you turn 3G off. even better is you have SbSettings easy to turn of and on:cool:

Well I had some time on my hands and searched YOUTUBE and found a thing called APPULOUS anyway this gives you access to thousands of Appstore Application for free. ;)

I installed the app as per the instructions of a pre pubescent UK teen on YOUTUBE.

Now I have access to ALL these apps and ofcoz I tried to Download and install a few Texas Holdem poker for one:D.

It downloads only a small amount and when I run the install is stops not completing.

Does anybody else have this app installed? FYI I am connected via office WiFi speeds are great.

Right please post replies What's the use you have access to the entire app store almost for free but then I get all this crap errors:rolleyes:

If you a Texas Holdem Poker fan, download Zynga's Texas Holdem Poker from the app store - its free and yoplay against real people via your facebook login.
 
Just came across this SBSettings toggle called FakeAPN, basically it allows you with a single button press (in doh - SBSettings) to change the APN from iphone.vodacom.za to fake.iphone.vodacom.za and back again.
Very useful if you don't want to make use of cellular data. The 3G toggle is apparently not a very reliable method to stop your iPhone from connecting to a data network.
Just search for it in Cydia for it (for me - on install the toggle was on by default but not visible, I had to set it off then on then it appeared)

Why go around stealing software. The only reason there are such amazing apps available for the iPhone is because people are supporting the developers by actually paying for the applications!! If you were a developer and spent major time on developing an awesome app and everyone bypassed the payment and downloaded it for free - I don't think you'd carry on developing, right?

Just a quick question.

What sort of covers do you use on your iphone. I am currently using a silicone cover that protects the back of my iphone 3g, I would like to get a clear cover that can protect the whole device but still show the good looks of the iphone.

Can anyone recommend a cover.

I actually don't like covers that stay on the device. Prefer a cover the phone slips in and out of. I have a crumpler pouch my iPhone slips into - pretty pricey though but really stylish.

Just my 2c :cool:
 
I have tried three sets of iPhone covers:
- Gelaskins (back and front) (R200-ish fora single back and two front covers and shipping to SA from Gelaskins website or about R300-R400 from Look&Listen)
- iSkin (Solo FX $33 bought in the USA, but probably R350-R500 in SA)
- Cheap Silicon skin with Gelaskin screen protector (R150 for three silicone covers from Vodacom 3G store)

I reckon the Gelaskins show off the design of the iPhone the best whilst adding zero bulk. They'll protect the front and back against scrapes and scratches, but not against dropping your phone.

I needed something tougher for work so I tried the iSkin. It is an awesome product and very high quality. It does stick in your pocket a bit though and adds a fair bit of bulk. Very good protection though. I used this for a while, but it's a real mission to get the phone in and out of the cover.

I've settled on the Gelaskin with the cheapo silicon case for work. The cheap case gives good protection and prevents the phone accidentally slipping out of your pocket. It also doesn't add as much bulk as the iSkin. I can also slip the iPhone out of the cover easily when I'm not at work.

Be aware though, while I find a screen protector an absolutely necessity, it does negate the iPhone 3GS' new anti-fingerprint coating on the screen.

I got what I thought to be a rather good deal from Vodashop - 3 x covers for R189 I think it was.

2 x silicone covers (one black one white) some love them some hate them, I personally don't mind it, gets stuck in your pocket occasionally but doesn't worry me to much.

1 x crystal case, nice cover, makes the phone a little bulkier but shows off the phone more than the silicone.
 
Guys sorry if this is posted somewhere here, but cant seem to find anything.

I want to do a fresh install on my phone, I have the 3.o restore file but when I click on it nothing happens. What must I do? Thanks
