you cannot install 3.0.1 anymore on the 3Gs, apple's not authorizing the restore, only 3.1
you were warned

Yup, the DevTeam warned people about upgrading to 3.1 on the 3GS.
This is a REALLY interesting article written by Saurik (author of Cydia) which covers the 3.1 on the 3GS and how he's tackling the issue etc. Give it a read. There is a link to a dedicated 3GS firmware downgrade forum.

so does this mean if I plain click "restore" in itunes I have to do it to 3.1 or you saying apple is blocking me from installing 3.0.1 by clicking shift+restore?? I know you not meant to be able to downgrade but I have seen methods!

It seems that way, if you code is on file. :)

For those of you that use push notifications...how much data does it use a month? Are we talking a few MB or a tad bit more?

My director is wanting me to setup push for our email server, with Funambol, so was just wondering how much data it really transfers.

what do you mean by this? surely if I use iTunes 8 and restore with my own firmware it cant be blocked?
+It is comming with 3.0 so I can use that if I cant update to 3.0.1:D

i mean iTunes (all versions that support 3Gs restore of any kind) contact the apple restore server before allowing a restore, no matter if you click shift and picked the file, the server then tells itunes, you are not allowed to perform the restore to 3.0 because 3.1 exists, and itunes then, you guessed it, refuses to do the restore

for now, when you get your phone, remain on 3.0 (don't even go 3.0.1)
jailbreak with redsn0w (if not already done)
upgrade to latest cydia
when startin cydia again it will ask you if it can put some restore related info on file on a cydia server for future use by yourself, allow this, cydia will now at the top say your phone data is "on file"

dev team very silently claims that the 3gs 3.1 os IS still exploitable through a new found exploit, which should enable them to jailbreak directly, but, if this is not possible, you need the on file info kept by cydia if you ever want to be able to downgrade to earlier firmwares again

as of now, the new 3.1 baseband for 3G cannot be unlocked, which means, all baseband bug fixes, you will not see, because you have to get a custom ipsw that doesn't upgrade your baseband...

again

you were warned

The amount of data used is negligible dude. It's just a few characters per message, you wont even see the change in your data usage.

In these times with the baseband/unlock uncertainty etc. I am really glad I have a native (ie purchased locally) Vodacom iPhone so no need to worry (if my understanding is correct). All I would like is the 3.1 JailBreak sometime, but even that I am not too phased about as 3.0.1 is fine for me at the moment.

3G or 3Gs?? if 3Gs just make sure you are "on file" in cydia

Just a quick question on syncing music in itunes.

How come some songs dont show album art in the ipod app, but I have the correct artwork in itunes?

any fixes?
I have manually edited them, but sometimes even then, the artwork shows as a black square...

happens if you disconnect the phone during a sync while it was busy syncing music

most effective (yet tedious) way to fix this, is to remove all music from the phone by unchecking "sync music" under the music tab on the phone in itunes, then under the main tab click "sync" takes a while and looks like it's doing nothing, wait for it to finish doing nothing...., then sync all music again by checking what you want under the music tab, then main tab you click sync again, and this time, wait for it.... DON'T DISCONNECT DURING THE SYNC... safest to put the phone on airplane mode before you start syncing, removes temptation and all....

Only a 3G in my case.

you lucky, you also always jailbreakable...

3Gs... well, that's a bit of a gamble... looks like they will be able to jailbreak 3.1 though, rest of the jailbreaks might have to come from custom firmware produced by pwnage tool... darn :(

mmmm, is there any reason why my iPhone 3GS would have ultrasn0w installed? It's supposed to be factory unlocked? I though ultrasn0w was only needed to soft unlock the iphone?

Under Cydia, ultrasn0w is installed... :|

Where did you say you bought your phone from again?

Ebay USA :)

But Push Notifications does work, so I recon it must be factory unlocked, otherwise it wouldn't have worked right? (GPush and IM+ works just fine with push)

lol, it's ultrasn0w unlocked, push will still work.

Did you install cydia or use redsn0w, ultras0w?

the phone came with cydia installed (pre-jailbroken). But the Ebay said it was Factory Unlocked... but it doesn't make sence that it has ultrasn0w installed.

I was told that if you have a soft unlocked phone, PUSH Notifications will not work no matter what... something to do with apple having your ECID etc...

A little more reading from the DevTeam titled Future-proofing the 3GS jailbreak as much as I may want a 3GS I am now kinda pleased (I guess) I only have the 3G.

well, they've confirmed it to be always jailbreakable, as long as you start off with 3.0, 3.0.1 or 3.1 (still to be released) and then in future only do firmware upgrades with custom ipsw's

so i'm glad i got it early in the game :)

uninstall it and see what happens

if you phone goes network locked, just reinstall it via wifi and start b!tching about the bad deal you made....

Uninstall ultrasn0w? That's a good idea, that way I can see if it's factory unlocked.. right?
