SO's iPhone just stopped working - couldn't make calls of send SMSes. She turned it off and on and it has ben stuck on the Apple logo for ages. What should she do?

have you tried this/tested it? From that link i see its for FW 2.*
Tried connecting to pc/itunes? Maybe for some reason its trying to boot into DFU mode...
If nothing happens after plugging it into iTunes, just put it into DFU mode and restore.
I don't think your SO is interested in jailbreaking her device, so make sure your on iTunes 9 and update it to 3.1.

You get what you pay for... a little bit extra and you can get a good deal locally, you pay extra but it's unlocked for real.

And Roland has a point above, if an iPhone has been updated to 3.1 the baseband will also be updated meaning it's not possible to reverse it back to an older baseband. Firmware yes, NOT baseband. And I highly doubt the 3Gs comes with bootloader v5.8 that was possible to perform the baseband downgrade.
But hey whatever... I guess it's just a matter of time for the DevTeam to release jailbreaks and unlocks! Apple should offer an option to pay in the extra amount to register your IMEI on their unlock servers.
Yes I did. It works perfectly, but the "More Info" and screenshots are removed. It works on my OS 3.0.1
this should be a free service! Apple are becoming just like MS with the way you can only use their products that you HAVE to pay for.

CRAP - brought my Windows laptop to work..
Here's an idea...
Someone load up the custom FW file for us Windows users, then we can do a restore in iTunes...
Cant see why this wont work...:erm:
Any ideas on this?

Hehe... Shame guys! I don't mind uploading it somewhere - but i'm throttled to 384kbps during the day - it'll take for hours!
Don't mind doing it later - you never know how long the Wind0ze release will take to be released...
Still haven't performed the jailbreak yet! I'm running into 1600 issues. I know it's related to increasing the Root Partition Size! I followed the iClarified to check what size he used and i'm using the same and still getting the darn error!!!!

YES! ITS WORKING!! I NEEDED PWNAGETOOL TO GET IT INTO DFU MODE.
So I don't know if it will work for you guys, the other guys on other forums used redsn0w to get it into DFU mode.
Will post later when all is running and installed.
