had anyone tried to configure the wireless on the iPhone to that of iBurst or something similar? Does it use the same protocols and is the receiver on the phone strong enough?

just a thought...

wouldn't think so.

i would think the only way to do it would be to connect a separate wifi router to the iburst modem to share the connection, or to the PC and share the connection from the PC

the whole purpose would be to get away from having to use the pc and theoritically have wifi access in most places. that way not having to use the sim data

Will not work - iBurst modems are locked to a user name and use a different wireless protocol to the 802.11b of the iPhone.

never thought of that. blonde moment.

essentially, wireless broadband providers like iburst/neotel etc use wide range wireless technologies (cover larger areas with less antennas), these technologies use entirely different hardware based protocols than wifi, wifi being a short range high speed network standard

so, won't be possible for any such provider, except the vodacom wifi hotspots out there, but that one's a given, with the whole 'wifi' in the name and all

I also have iBurst. Your best bet is to just get a router (i have a cheap R200 Asus from Rectron) but it works fine. THen at least when u home, u can use your iburst and not phone data

currently i have adsl at home, with a wireless router. So im not looking to do it, i was just thinking on the way to work. But like Roland explained, i hadnt thought it through before posting the statement. lol

Oh ok. Think i also misunderstood the initial 'problem'. :)

It says vodacom there but not at top.. didnt notice that

Yeah its a little kink that the dev team are working on... Happens to some, not to others..

If it really bothers you, install MakeItMine or Fake Carrier from Cydia and change it that way.

Thanks mate.

Wants about an hour. Your 3G is from Vodacom right? I will upload both anyways but i'm uploading the firmware for factory unlocked first.
