My friend tried to update their iPhone with iTunes and now it seems to be locked. it is a 2G. When it starts up you have to enter the pin code and the thingy telling you to connect to iTunes comes up and then when you do, iTunes says that it is not a valid sim.

I can't use the Ultrasnow unlock as I can't get into the phone. I have jailbroken it with Blackra1in but that is pointless if I can't get into the phone.

Can someone help me?

blackra1n isn't for unlocked phones for this reason.. does not hacktivate..

what firmware did you upgrade it to?

try grabbing a custom ACTIVATED 2G 3.1.2 firmware from here - http://www.xsellize.com/showthread.php?t=67519 and shift-restoring to it.

EDIT: Those labels are a bit confusing.. here is one i found from another thread:

2G: default root, standart logo, hacktivated, unlocked, cydia only
iPhone1_1_3.1.2_7D11_Custom_Restore.ipsw

Sounds like what you need.

you will probably need to put the phone in white DFU mode first (using iREB)

if that doesn't work:

i would go back to 3.0 (or 3.0.1) by putting the phone in white-DFU mode (using iREB) , then shift-restoring to 3.0 firmware, running redSn0w to jailbreak (which will also hacktivate)

http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4302

After 3.0 is jailbroken, shift-upgrade to a pwned 3.1.2 custom firmware found here- http://www.xsellize.com/showthread.php?t=67519

.. but your friend probably could have avoided this by just searching for "blackra1n" and doing a bit of reading first before jumping into it..

I didn't update the phone, my friend did. I'm trying to fix it... Thanks, I will try restore to that firmware. I'm not sure what's currently on the phone, but they just pressed the update button in iTunes, so I'm assuming it's 3.1.2

Are you sure that will help if he is not on the 5.x.x Baseband?

don't think they have had a baseband update for a while for the 2G

it's not the same version as the 3G/3GS

so chances are he is still unlocked.. which is why i asked if he had any signal or not showing the carrier name (vodacom/mtn or whatever). that would confirm the phone is still unlocked but just not activated..

so restoring to a pwned firmware which has activate checked in quickpwn should fix it.

I got a restore error 1603. :(

Is it in white DFU mode using iREB?

Try using diff USB ports as well (back of PC), restarting PC etc.

I found a seemingly vague small post from 1 million google searches saying "Hey, if it hangs, before it goes to the 1604 error, just simply bring up your Task Manager and close the Itunes process...then, relaunch Itunes, it should see your Iphone, go through the restore again and wallah, it should work".

Did you follow the instructions? It's worked for others..

I put my phone into recovery mode, while plugged in to the computer. (The cord with the arrow to iTunes)

I then opened iREB and pressed on the button, and nothing happened.
