Is Isuzu’s 6-cylinder turbodiesel hiding in plain view?

Few automotive brands are quite as committed to diesel powerplants as Isuzu, but the brand lacks a 6-cylinder engine to compete with those of its rivals’ flagship bakkies. However, an Isuzu D-Max with a 6-cylinder mill might well happen – thanks to Mazda.

Japanese automotive manufacturers are uncommonly good at engine innovation. They might not always make engines that produce the best specific power outputs (something German brands have been obsessed with), but never underestimate Japanese powertrain development or engineering ingenuity.

Examples? There are so many. Think of the durability of Japanese engines in legendary off-road vehicles such as the Toyota Land Cruiser and Nissan Patrol. And the Lexus LF-A’s joint-venture Toyota/Yamaha 4.8-litre V10, arguably the most significant naturally-aspirated engine this century.

The Japanese car brands produce astoundingly good tiny engines too. When Ferrari was trumpeting its F355’s amazing 5-valve per cylinder technology in the mid-1990s, Toyota democratised it with the 20-valve 4A-GE 1.6-litre engines in the Corolla RSi and RXi – again, thanks to Yamaha.

Indeed, Japanese engineers are great at designing daring powertrains. Isuzu, however, is rather different to its peers: its global product range consists of bakkies and associated ladder-frame platform SUVs that are powered by workhorse turbodiesel engines. By virtue of its position, Isuzu faces a unique challenge.

In theory, if you believe government regulators and futurists, diesel will not be around as a vehicle powertrain option for much longer. That’s bad news for Isuzu, isn’t it?

Not content to let the recently revised Toyota Fortuner range and the freshly expanded Ford Everest line-up hog the 7-seater adventure SUV limelight, the Isuzu MU-X is in line for a minor refresh. In South Africa, the update will include the arrival of a new derivative … and we have local pricing.

As a reminder, the 2nd-generation MU-X – again based on the D-Max bakkie – launched in SA in November 2021, with the local range comprising 4 derivatives. For 2023, however, the line-up will expand to 5 variants thanks to the addition of a new LSE 4×4 model (this trim level was previously available only in 4×2 configuration).

So, what about pricing? Well, courtesy of our studious friends over at duoporta.com, we know the rejigged range will kick off with the 3.0TD LS, starting at R784 300. Next is the 3.0TD LSE 4×2 (R826 200), followed by a trio of all-wheel-drive derivatives: the 3.0TD LS 4×4 for R867 600, the freshly added 3.0TD LSE 4×4 for R909 500 and the flagship Onyx 4×4 for R928 100.

From what we understand, the MU-X powertrain is untouched. That means all variants still employ the Japanese firm’s 3.0-litre, 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine, which generates an unchanged 140 kW and 450 Nm. A 6-speed automatic transmission is again standard across the range.

2023 Isuzu MU-X arrives with spec enhancements and expanded range

Keen to grab some additional market share in a segment dominated by the Toyota Fortuner, Isuzu South Africa is expanding its MU-X range while also adding a few enhancements.

Aiming to make the large SUV accessible to a wider audience, Isuzu will be adding a 1.9-litre LS derivative to the mix later this year to complement the existing 3.0-litre line-up. While it will be the most affordable model in the range, pricing has yet to be announced however.

As of now Isuzu is also expanding the 3.0-litre line-up with the addition of a 3.0 LSE 4x4 model. Until now the mid-range model, which slots between the 3.0 LS and 3.0 Onyx, was only available in 4x2 guise.

The 2023 Isuzu MU-X also receives some subtle design changes.

The silver and chrome finishes found on the previous model have been replaced by a dark Magnetite finish for the grille, bumpers, roof rails and side steps.

What’s more, privacy glass is now standard across the line-up and there’s a new colour option called Norwegian Blue, which the carmaker refers to as “stunning”.

But that’s not all. The LS base derivative trades its previous 17-inch alloys for the same 18” rims fitted to the LSE, while the Onyx gains new 20-inch machined alloys.

All Isuzu MU-X models are sold with a five-year or 90 000km service plan and a warranty valid for five years or 120 000km.

The updated Isuzu MU-X is sold with a 5-year/90 000 km service plan and a 5-year/120 000 km warranty, as well as roadside assistance. A 5-year/unlimited km anti-corrosion warranty has been included, and service intervals are every 15 000 km/12 months.

Summary

The changes to the MY23 Isuzu MU-X 7-seat adventure SUV may be minor and not immediately noticeable, but it’s all about giving the customers what they want, of which the introduction of the 4×4-capable LSE derivative is a prime example. The update also serves to remind South African consumers that, even though the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Everest hog the limelight, the MU-X is still a credible and capable product. New Isuzu D-Max Arctic Trucks AT35 Locked in For SA!

The new Isuzu D-Max Artic Trucks AT35 has finally been confirmed for South Africa, though – rather curiously – the firm’s local division is unable to confirm pricing…

Isuzu Motors South Africa dropped a substantial hint late in 2022 and now the news is official: the latest Isuzu D-Max Arctic Trucks AT35 has been confirmed for the local market in “limited” numbers.

Despite the Japanese firm’s local division saying the new flagship model “is available on special order through Isuzu’s local dealer network” (as in, present tense), it curiously cannot currently confirm pricing. We even called a couple of local dealerships, which were likewise unable to share an official figure.

So, what do we know? Well, developed in collaboration with Icelandic specialists Arctic Trucks, the 2023 D-Max Arctic AT35 will again be locally assembled at Isuzu’s plant in Struandale, Gqeberha. As was the case with the previous-generation version of the beefed-up bakkie, the Struandale plant is the only Isuzu facility in the world accredited by Arctic Trucks to produce the D-Max AT35.

Based on the range-topping V-Cross 4×4 double-cab derivative (which, for the record, is currently priced at R857 700), the AT35 gains its enhancements in a dedicated Arctic Trucks conversion area in the body shop, where Isuzu says its “most skilled artisans and technicians craft the bigger wheel wells and arches to accommodate the large 35-inch tyres and beefed-up suspension”.

Isuzu Motors South Africa confirmed the D-Max Arctic Trucks AT35 for the local market in mid-May 2023, though curiously wasn’t able to share how much it would cost. Now, we’ve finally managed to unearth this new flagship double-cab bakkie’s price.

According to our information (which has since been confirmed by a 2nd source), the D-Max Arctic Trucks AT35 3.0TD 4×4 will be priced from R1 120 620. For the record, that makes it South Africa’s 4th-most expensive double-cab bakkie, behind the Volkswagen Amarok 3.0TDI V6 Aventura 4Motion (R1 138 200), Ford Ranger 3.0 V6 EcoBoost Raptor 4WD (R1 184 100) and Jeep Gladiator 3.6 Rubicon (R1 329 900). It is, however, the country’s most expensive 4-cylinder bakkie.

Offered in “limited” numbers and set to be available “on special order” through Isuzu’s local dealer network, the AT35 is based on the D-Max 3.0TD V-Cross 4×4. The beefed-up flagship commands a R241 420 premium over that derivative and thus sits right at the summit of the local D-Max line-up, arriving as the 28th variant in the range (along with a further 5 in the prolonged-lifecycle Gen 6 portfolio).

A new entry-level version of the Isuzu MU-X has arrived in South Africa, set apart by its 1.9-litre turbodiesel heart. Here’s what the “value-oriented” newcomer will cost you…

In May 2023, the Isuzu MU-X range was handed a bit of a refresh in South Africa, with the Japanese brand also confirming a new “value-oriented” base model was in the pipeline. Now, that entry-level derivative has arrived in the form of the MU-X 1.9 LS 4×2.

As the name suggests, the newcomer – which is part of Isuzu Motors SA’s latest effort to take the fight to the recently revised Toyota Fortuner range and the freshly expanded Ford Everest line-up – doesn’t employ the 140 kW/450 Nm 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine used by the 5 other derivatives in the range. Instead, the fresh base model is powered by the 1.9-litre, 4-cylinder oil-burning motor that we already know from the D-Max line-up (and the closely related Mazda BT-50, too).

This smaller-capacity unit generates 110 kW and 350 Nm, peak outputs that are delivered to the 7-seat adventure SUV’s rear axle via a 6-speed automatic transmission as standard. From what we understand, there are no plans to offer the 1.9-litre variant in 4×4 guise.
