2017 Kia Stinger European specifications confirmed

Diesel engine joins two petrol units; top of the pile is a turbocharged 3.3-litre that packs 360bhp and can accelerate the car from 0-62mph in 5.1sec

The Kia Stinger has now been revealed in European specification, confirming the details of all three of its powertrain options for the first time.

The Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class rival will enter production in the second half of 2017 before sales kick off in the final quarter of the year.

Pricing is yet to be announced, but the entry model will likely be priced to compete with its rivals so a starting figure of around £28,000 is expected.

Engines and gearbox

Europe's entry engine is a turbocharged 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel that produces 197bhp and 325lb ft of torque - the latter figure is available from 1,750-2,750 rpm. It can acclerate the car from 0-62mph in 8.5sec and onto a top speed of 158mph.

Above this sits the first petrol engine, a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder that produces 252bhp and 260lb ft of torque. No straight-line performance figures have been released for this unit yet, but it's expected to be slightly quicker than the diesel.

Top of the range is the turbocharged 3.3-litre V6 petrol engine of the Stinger GT. The GT is aimed squarely at more potent versions of the Stinger's rivals, although it sits below the likes of the BMW M3 and Mercedes-AMG C63. Its engine produces 370bhp and 376lb ft of torque and can accelerate the car from 0-62mph in 5.1sec, meaning the GT can outpunch the 349bhp Audi S4. Kia targets a top speed of 168mph for the GT.

Both rear and four-wheel drive versions of the Stinger are available, and the car uses an eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard.

So pricing starts at about R500k if we are lucky to get it here... for a 2.2 diesel...

I'll rather have a 2nd hand Panamera then

Kia confirms diesel power for sporty Stinger

A week after creating a stir at the Detroit Motor Show, Kia has detailed the European specifations for its new rear-wheel-driven sports sedan, and it includes a diesel option.

Heavily inspired by the Kia GT Concept of 2011, the Stinger will be Kia’s fastest vehicle ever in range-topping V6 petrol form, but there will also be a more sensible option for diesel-heads. This comes in the form of a 2.2-litre turbodiesel that produces 147kW at 3800rpm and 440Nm between 1750 and 2750rpm. Kia claims a top speed of 225km/h for this derivative, which will take just 8.5 seconds to get to the 100km/h mark.

Meanwhile Kia has also confirmed the outputs and performance figures for the range-topping 3.3-litre V6 turbopetrol engine. This one’s good for 272kW at 6000rpm (Kia previously estimated at 268kW), with 510Nm of twist between 1300 and 4500rpm and 0-100km/h should take just 5.1 seconds, Kia claims.

The only other petrol option for now is a 2-litre turbo motor that pushes 188kW at 6200rpm and 353 from 1400 to 400rpm.

The engines are, of course, mounted lengthways and drive the rear wheels (or all wheels in certain derivatives where that option will be offered) through an eight-speed automatic gearbox, featuring steering-mounted shift paddles.

Kia describes the GT as a “true gran turismo, a car for spirited long-distance driving.” It features an variable damping system offering separate adjustments for the front and rear axles as well as five drive modes.

Available features and gadgets include height-adjustable Head-Up Display, Advanced Smart Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist, Surround View Monitoring, Driver Attention Alert and a 15-speaker Harman-Kardon surround-sound audio system.

While Kia has yet to confirm this sports sedan for the local market, it is currently “under consideration” and if it did get the green light, it wouldn’t land before year-end.

Kia reveals Stinger GT’s official 0-100 km/h time…

Back in December 2016, before the Kia Stinger GT was unveiled, the Korean brand shared the new fastback sedan’s targeted 0-100 km/h time.

Stressing that it was but a “pre-homologation development target”, the automaker floated out a figure of 5,1 seconds.

But now, with the Stinger GT enjoying its Asian debut at the 2017 Seoul Motor Show, Kia has revealed the rear-wheel-drive flagship model’s official sprint time. And, somewhat surprisingly, it’s dropped from that stated target.

Yes, Kia says the 3,3-litre twin-turbo V6 – which makes 272 kW and 510 N.m, and is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission – allows the range-topping Stinger GT to hit three figures in just 4,9 seconds, some two-tenths faster than the initial target. And that makes it the fastest-accelerating and most powerful car Kia has ever produced.

A 2,0-litre turbo petrol engine (190 kW/353 N.m) and a 2,2-litre turbodiesel (147 kW/440 N.m) unit will also be available in some markets.

Kia Motors SA told CARmag.co.za that the Stinger is currently “under consideration for a South African introduction, most likely early in 2018”. However, the brand added that it did not yet have any confirmation on which derivatives will be made available to general markets such as South Africa.

“Once that information is available, we will commence with a full feasibility study to determine if such an introduction is indeed possible. We are optimistic,” Kia SA told us.

Dear Kia South Africa,

When this arrives in South Africa, can I please have it for a week? I'll name my third-born child Kia in return.

Thanks!

After seeing this pic, I suspect that I saw a test mule of this last night.
I could not identify the car when it passed me, but looking in the rear view mirror the light clusters and detailing was quite similar.
