Refreshed Kia Stinger goes on sale from £42,595

Sports saloon gains upgraded interior and new colours as 3.3-litre V6 becomes sole engine option

The updated Kia Stinger is available to pre-order now from £42,595, equipped exclusively with a 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6 engine.

The Stinger is now sold only in top-rung GT S guise, which pairs its 361bhp petrol powerplant with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The 2.0-litre turbo petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines have been dropped, as Kia claims the majority of Stinger customers went for the more powerful variant, which, with a 0-62mph sprint time of 4.7sec and top speed of 167mph, is the fastest-accelerating Kia yet sold in Europe.

The V6 benefits from a new variable exhaust system, which uses a butterfly valve to enhance or dampen the sound depending on the drive mode.

The 2022 Kia Stinger Gets Bumped Up To 300 HP

The Kia Stinger is probably one of the best performance buys on the market. Where else can you get rear-wheel drive, a choice of two turbocharged engines in a fastback body with a 100,000 mile warranty? Granted sales haven’t always been so hot, but you appreciate things like this while you have them. For 2022 the Stinger receives some updates. A report from Korean Car Blog indicates there’s more power and some lineup changes.

First up, the increased power: The base Stinger will now use a more powerful version of the 2.5-liter turbo four cylinder found in other Hyundai/Kia products. In cars like the Sonata N Line and K5 GT, this engine makes 290 horsepower. The Stinger gets a 10 HP increase to 300 while torque remains the same as the other cars at 311 lb-ft. That’s a pretty big increase over the outgoing 2.0-liter turbo four that made 255 HP in base Stingers.

That power increase won’t come cheap though. The ’22 Stinger will start $3,000 higher than the 2021 model. The base price is up to $36,090; $38,290 if you want all-wheel drive. Keep in mind that all base Stingers are GT Line now. That price increase doesn’t change how Kia packs in the value, though. While other automakers would just increase the price based solely on a new, more powerful engine, Kia threw in some more features. Base Stingers now come standard with things like a 10.25-inch touchscreen, LED headlights and smart cruise control.

The Kia Stinger, you probably have heard by now, is the real deal, an honest challenger to a car like the BMW M340i. And cheaper, too. On Tuesday, Kia confirmed that the base model will get 300 horsepower, or 45 horsepower more than the outgoing, as we first heard in August. The Kia Stinger is edging toward the ideal.

Not that 255 horsepower out of the four-cylinder is anything to sniff at in the 2021 base model, and you could always step up to the twin-turbo V6 and get 365 horsepower. But, and perhaps this is merely an aesthetic thing, 255 horsepower always felt agonizingly close to the correct amount of horsepower, but just short and thus inadequate. Three-hundred-sixty-five horsepower, on the other hand, felt like overcompensating a bit.

Sharper Kia Stinger Brings More Sting

Kia has revealed its updated Stinger fastback sports sedan which now features more power, enhanced styling as well as a revised interior. See what’s changed below…

We tested the Stinger back in January 2019 and we came away mightily impressed by what Kia had achieved with this V6-powered, rear-wheel-drive car that was hugely entertaining to drive while also being well-mannered as a daily driver.

The Stinger wasn’t all perfect though, and one of our criticisms was aimed at Kia’s choice of some of the interior materials which were not up to standard in a car of this calibre.

However, with this latest update, Kia has looked to enhance the Stinger’s exterior styling while also paying closer attention to lifting the perceived quality of the interior.

Despite the Stinger being an impressive product from Kia, it remains a niche offering in South Africa and as a result, local sales were not particularly inspiring and we have our doubts whether we will see this latest Stinger in South Africa. Nonetheless, we have reached out to Kia South Africa to find out if the Stinger will become available and as soon as we hear back, we will let you know!

An all-electric car and a one-off Seoul-special heads to the Festival of Speed

To celebrate Kia’s first official appearance at the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard next month, the South Korean-based automotive conglomerate will display its highly anticipated new electric car, the Kia EV6, as well as the sensational, one-off ‘Stinger GT420’. Claimed to be the largest and greatest celebration of car culture in the world, the four-day UK-summer event runs from Thursday, 8 July, to Sunday, 11 July, and will feature an exhilarating array of the rarest, newest and most exotic vehicles ever created.

The Kia EV6 is set to rock the ‘Electric Avenue – The Road to 2030’ presented by Sky Zero, a must-see new exhibit designed to showcase the breadth of electric vehicles available now and in the near future. The exhibit will take place in a striking new structure, situated at the heart of the Festival of Speed between the ‘Future Lab presented by bp’ and ‘First Glance Paddock’, immersing “visitors” with colourful visuals and a futuristic sound-scape.

A report says that Kia may ax the sports sedan from its lineup next year

The Kia Stinger was a game-changer. It’s a competent sport sedan from a brand that was once thought of as a joke. From the beginning, it was punching far above its weight. But as Korean Car Blog reports, the Stinger may be killed off next year.

The Stinger never sold in big numbers. And Kia never expected it too. But rumors of its demise have been swirling for years. The recent refresh killed those rumors.And in 2019 after sales reports came out showing Stinger sales were down 19 percent from the year prior, Car Advice spoke with Kia VP and senior designer Gregory Guillaume who said the brand wasn’t throwing in the towel on the Stinger, and that cars like that took time to build the brand up:

“I remember… it took three generations of the A8 to be seen on eye level to a BMW 7 Series or Mercedes S-Class. You have to persevere. If you’re entering these segments (whether) it’s premium or image vehicles, you have to give yourself a bit of time.”

Well, it looks like that time may be up. Korean Car Blog says that the Stinger is set to end production after the second quarter of 2022. Continually slow sales of the Stinger, as well as plant retooling for upcoming EVs are to blame:

That's sad, at least fellow Aussie and Youtuber Bryan from Tech YES City gets great mileage and use out of his one. Very practical car it seems if you are in the used PC business.
