I read an interesting article several years ago (think it was "Omni" magazine) regarding surveying / exploring the Mariana Trench.
Apparently, air and marine craft that sink to the bottom of the trench are difficult, if not impossible to locate, as the bed of the trench is allegedly obscured by a thick layer of soft sediment.

Among the interesting organisms that live at the bottom are a variety of Xenophyophores (Large Amoebas that build sandy 'homes'). One known species of which can grow as big as a human fist, maybe larger. Some of them also build structures with remarkably regular patterns. Regularly spaced holes. Hexagonal cells. Etc. Probably live for ages in such a low energy environment too.

What type of plastic, is it garbage or is it debris? That kind of make the difference if you speak of finding plastic in the ocean, especially in the Challenger. The video didn't elaborate, could have been a door handle for a alien spaceship for all I care. Yes, it is pollution, but plastic can be found anywhere in the ocean thanks to mankind. Would have liked if their was more to the discovery of plastic other than setting new records.

Totally agree, would of been cool if the robotics down there could retrieve the plastic and bring back to shoer for further analysis
