The Mazda 6 Thread

Hey guys. I've been researching buying a 2015 Mazda6 2.2 DE Atenza. Found a decent example online. It has around 95000km and has FSH and is from a Mazda dealership. Is there anything that I should be worried about before purchasing this vehicle? I need it for the extra space and I'll be damned if I jump on the SUV bandwagon!
Beautiful car, it's a Mazda, nothing ever goes wrong with a Mazda, it's zoom zoom like that.

Thank you for the reply! Yes I watched countless video reviews on the car and I'm just waiting for a test drive once it can be arranged (due to lockdown restrictions)

Mazda 6 to move to petrol-only as diesel production ends

Mazda's large saloon becomes the latest model to ditch diesel, with production ending this month and stock available until the end of the year

Mazda will cease production of its 6 large saloon and estate in diesel form this month, with the model moving to naturally-aspirated petrol power only in Europe.

It's believed that the long-standing 2.2-litre diesel unit would need redesigning in order to meet ever-toughening emissions legislation. The investment required to do would not be met with sales volumes significant enough to justify it.

The diesel 6 will still be available to order from stock until the end of the year, however, a UK spokesman has confirmed.

Mazda reveals straight-six engine that could be used for next 6

Six-cylinder petrol/diesel unit is reportedly linked to new saloon and estate due to launch in 2022

Mazda has used its third-quarter financial presentation to show its new straight-six engine, which is likely to be used by the next Mazda 6 saloon and estate.

The new six-cylinder unit, which was announced in 2019, is set to be offered “after 2022” and will be available in petrol, diesel and Skyactiv-X compression-ignition petrol guises.

Technical details for the engine are thin on the ground. All we know so far is that it will be installed longitudinally and mated to a four-wheel drive system, although possibly not exclusively the latter.

Its existence is significant, however, because earlier reports from Japan and the US have indicated that the replacement for the 6 - also expected to be shown in 2022 - will adopt this engine.

Those reports indicated that the model would be rear-wheel-drive, but it’s entirely possible that four-wheel-drive variants could also be offered.

Mazda confirms its new six-cylinder engines are coming by 2022

Mazda has confirmed it plans to start rolling out new six-cylinder engines by 2022, with the next-generation Mazda6 and CX-5 likely to be recipients.

The Japanese company included a slide about its new longitudinal inline-six powertrains in a presentation detailing its second-quarter financial results for the fiscal year ending March 2021.

Under the heading “Investment for raising brand value”, Mazda confirmed it planned to “develop high power/low CO2 hardware" over the “next two years”.

This follows the firm’s announcement in May 2019 that it planned to create inline-six petrol and diesel engines, while also hinting it would develop a new rear-wheel-drive platform for large vehicles.

According to the post, the first will be a 3,3-litre turbodiesel mill, wearing Mazda’s Skyactiv-D badge and generating 210 kW and 600 N.m. The second will apparently incorporate the company’s latest Skyactiv-X compression-ignition petrol technology, with the 3,0-litre unit set to feature a 48 V mild-hybrid system and peak outputs of 210 kW and 340 N.m.

The Mazda6 And CX-3 Are Dead

Bad news for fans of Mazda’s small crossover and long-running sport sedan. Mazda has announced today that both will be getting the ax for the 2022 model year.

In a statement, the company pretty much said that changing consumer tastes were the reason Mazda is getting rid of the models.

“As consumer interests continue to evolve, Mazda will discontinue CX-3 and Mazda6 for the 2022 model year. Although these two vehicles will be leaving our lineup, we are proud of the performance, design, quality, and safety they contributed to our brand.”

The 6 going away is surprising. It’s been a staple in the Mazda lineup for almost 20 years, with the current generation debuting in 2012 with a refresh in 2018. The last couple of years got enthusiasts excited about it again. Rumors were that the next-gen of the 6 was coming with a straight-six engine and a new RWD platform. This still could be coming as a next-generation 6 or a whole new model altogether. I reached out to Mazda for more information and unfortunately got the typical “We can’t comment on future product plans.” response. With sedans dying, it’ll be missed. Luckily Mazda just gave it the option of their new 2.5-liter turbo engine. So go try it now before it’s gone.

CAR REVIEW

Mazda 6

WHAT IS THE VERDICT?

“A perfectly adequate family barge, but a weak petrol engine line up and changing consumer preferences means likely for not much longer”

It’s a competent enough thing, the 6, but times have changed and we can’t help but scratch our heads as to who would buy a near-enough 10-year-old car, despite its many, many facelifts. Mazda’s done impressively well to keep it in the ring for as long as it has, but it sadly feels like the end is nigh, a la Ford’s Mondeo.

While style, ride and comfort are all perfectly good enough for a family saloon, it simply falls too short on the engine front. The lack of turbocharger means the 2.0-litres feels underpowered, while the 2.5-litre lacks the finesse it badly needs. But hey, if you’re after a relatively affordable family barge, then it’ll do just fine.

Mazda 6 2.0 SkyActiv-G Kuro Edition 2021 UK review

Should I buy one?

If you’re at all of a mind to move out of an SUV and back into a well-priced family car with more of an enticing dynamic flavour - and assuming the highish lab-test emissions of an atmospheric petrol engine won’t put you off - think about it.

The Mazda 6 Kuro is a car with plenty of versatility in its driving experience, but also an understated and pretty effortless sort of high-speed composure and cornering poise that would make it regularly pleasing, and rarely if ever a punishing, car to drive. It’d do 45mpg on the office commute; and while it won’t feel particularly fast on the long way home, it will certainly do enough to keep you coming back that way.

If you can remember a time when a sub-1.5-tonne four-door with more than 160bhp would have been considered a driver’s car of a kind, there’s no reason not to think of this one in similar terms.

Pour One out for America’s 2 New Mazda6 Owners

Of all the car joints in all the towns in all the world, they walk into mine and buy a Mazda6.

It’s a rough time to buy a car these days. Soaring used car prices and dwindling new model inventories are making it tough for anyone seeking a new set of wheels. So if you walk into a dealership and find a gleaming new sedan on the lot ready to drive away, you might feel the need to pinch yourself.

Well, that’s exactly the scenario two buyers found themselves in last month. Only, the “new” sedan they were about to drive off the lot was a big ol’ Mazda6. That’s right — Mazda sold two 6 sedans last month, which is a pretty dramatic drop on the 2,335 units it shifted this time last year.

Of course, this is a car that was discontinued more than a year ago and hasn’t had a meaningful update since 2018.

In fact, the latest iteration of the 6 that these owners will now proudly be driving around town traces its origins way back to 2012, when the third generation of the midsize sedan was first introduced.

How Does a BMW Grille Look So Good on a Mazda6?

And what should we call it? The Mazda 6 Series? The BMW6?

Generally, we’re not big fans of up-badging. After all, who are you really trying to impress with an AMG badge on your C300? I guess everyone’s allowed to like what they like, but come on. Humblebadging, on the other hand, is much cooler. An E39 M5 badged as a 518i? Go for it. A couple of people will probably appreciate what you’ve done when they notice it. And yet, we can’t help but appreciate how well-executed this technically up-badged BMW Mazda6 is.

Originally posted on the BMW subreddit about a week ago by user CanadaGoose-Moncler (who goes by YoungLonie on Instagram), the photo shown here isn’t just a Mazda6 with BMW badges. No, that wasn’t enough for the owner. They went all-out and added a BMW grille. It’s not supposed to work. It shouldn’t have worked. And yet, somehow, it does?

I highly doubt many people who wish BMW still made the 6 Series will see this article and decide what they really need is a Mazda6 with a BMW grille. But if you’re one of those people who would consider it, now you know it’ll work shockingly well. Since you found out about it here, though, you’re now legally required to send us photos of the build. My ex-wife’s a lawyer, so I would know. Also, I’ve seen every episode of Boston Legal, so you really don’t want to tangle with me in court.

Mazda 6 axed in UK after 20 years as sales dwindle

Removal comes after a decline of sales in the large family car segment in the UK, SUVs proving more popular

The Mazda 6 been axed from the firm's UK line-up after two decades, due to a decline popularity.

In a statement sent to Autocar, Mazda UK confirmed the decision was made to axe the Skoda Superb rival after sales dwindled in the segment, with customers prioritising SUV purchases.

The Japanese firm will now focus on the Mazda CX-60 plug-in hybrid, the upcoming CX-60 diesel and the Mazda CX-5, all of which have proven popular buys in the UK.

The 6 was removed from sale in the US last year but will remain on sale in select European countries for the time being.

Sold in both saloon and estate bodystyles, the 6 had been offered here with a choice of 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre petrol engines, which, unlike many of Mazda's latest offerings, weren't available with any sort of electrification.

Mazda sold 169,123 examples of the 6 in the UK, spanning three model generations.

The Mazda 6 is off sale, and it won’t be coming back

Sad times. Both saloon and estate versions of the Mazda 6 have been pulled from UK sale forever

Bad news, folks: the SUV has killed off another favourite of ours, and this time it’s the Mazda 6 facing the abyss in the UK. Yup, both the saloon and the Tourer estate have been thrust into the void.

Sadly it’s not the biggest surprise in the world: the third-generation 6 has been hanging around for a decade now, and there’s no replacement in the offing with interest in the segment dwindling.

Since the first-generation 6 went on sale in the UK in 2002, 169,123 units have been sold. However, Mazda only shifted 667 examples in 2021 and 721 cars last year.

“With the launch of the Mazda CX-60 PHEV and the upcoming CX-60 diesel, as well as the well-established Mazda CX-5 – SUV consumer demand continues to grow and this is where the focus is for dealers and in the UK market,” said Mazda in a statement. “This combined with declining UK sales in the saloon and estate car sector, mean we have ended sales of the Mazda 6 in the UK.

“However, the Mazda 6 will continue to be sold in some European markets.” Well, that’s something at least.

It means demand for SUVs has hoovered up another victim, with everything from hatchbacks to saloons and estates increasingly being ushered out of showrooms as a result.
