The Middle East Conflict Thread

Do you think it's purely by chance that Israel is in breach of more United Nations resolutions than any other country in the world?

The same UN whom they quote to justify the legitimacy of Israel, even though it was a very small organization at the time.

I don't really think the Zanu-PF bit applies.

For even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Don't be fooled, Israel are targeting innocent civilians with missiles and bombs and numerous other weapons.

< Not that I believe in Satan, mind, LOL >

Rubbish, i am not a big supporter of Israel but i believe they are not dropping bombs intending to kill the innocent.

Innocent people die in war.

2. Oh, I understand the point of view - I just regard it as false.

192 nations in the UN recognise the State of Israel regardless of your opinion. If that's your attitude then you're no better than Hamas; there can never be peace in the Middle East when people think like you do.

Shame Timgaul, your inability to grasp the subject under discussion is saddening.

No I honestly think you are too hell bent on hating Israel to realise that every atrocity you now mention has been committed by the Arab nations surrounding Israel 10 times over. If you are willing to accept these accusations you're making then you better accept that Palestine deserves everything it receives at the moment. Your high horse is not so high when you only view it from a singular point of view, as such you are incapable of being objective and your comment becomes a non-issue.

According to your argument, there is no right and wrong, no objective way of judging the actions of men and nations.

That is simply not true. Over the centuries mankind has developed at least a rudimentary set of generally accepted principles in terms of which we can judge the behaviour of men. Hence the creation of the International Court of Justice and later the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

Except you probably wouldn't accept that decision either, I know out friend rwenzori most definitely doesn't. Why should Israel put stock in these things when Hamas clearly doesn't? But we are referring to world opinion here, not to any legal decision. Any war is a messy business and no matter what the US does it will get its hands dirty. Unfortunately there are people so set against the US they wouldn't be able to see that they chose the lesser of two evils in most cases.

Genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression are but a few things that civilised people now accept to be wrong.

Yes, I agree, Hamas should be hung out to dry for committing these crimes.

1948: Palestine contravenes UN Resolution 181. Palestine lose their country to Jordan and Egypt.

1967: Once again the UN Resolutions are ignored and Israel is attacked first. Palestine is lost to Israel.

2008: Israel doesn't put much stock in UN Resolutions since history has proved the Arab nations don't either. Thanks Jordan, Syria, Palestine, Egypt - Israel learnt from the best!

The state is there, de facto, so it is "recognised" in that sense. I wonder if resolution 181 would pass in the current UN.

I terms of peace, let them return at least to their pre-1967 borders, stop murdering Palestinians in the ghettos they have created, allow the right of return, set up some form of compensation for those dispossessed of their land, and maybe there is a chance. Or, like SA, unify the whole area in one country with one man one vote - LOL - I don't think the Zionists would like that one!

But the Palestinians are also inconsistent in this particular argument and conflict. Why then should we support them and not the US?
We shouldn't.
We should support any side that encourages peace and not religious hatred or terrorism. And if you think the US doesn't sponsor terrorism on the side, then that's just naivety. This dispute is only going to be resolved when one side is so weak, they have to sue for peace.

They had the chance (Palestinians) to do exactly that, but they refused. In fact they wanted more. Now it isn't on the table any more, they are squealing like stuck pigs.

So? I was just trying to explain some of the pre-requisites for a possible peace. Which Israel clearly does not want, from what you say.

No that is completely wrong, it is not de facto at all. It is a full member of the United Nations, quiet capable of being on the Security Council recognised by 192 full member nations.

Resolution 181 is not too different to UN Security Council Resolution 1244, for example.

There were processes in place to create such a nation but Hamas declared them invalid upon taking power, they then refused to recognise the State of Israel and murdered innocent Israelis with their bombs and rockets. Had Hamas not provoked and angered Israel they may have got what they wanted. So maybe a chance, but Hamas must be eliminated first - either by Israeli force or politically by the Palestinians themselves.

What's the lesson here kiddies? Don't poke the big sleeping dog with a stick, it might get angry

Nonsense. You aren't reading what I wrote.

The Palestinians keep changing the goal posts. They want Jerusalem for a start. The Israelis have had enough of their lack of reason. In fact there was a LOT of pressure within Israel to make peace after years of violence. Part of that was the wall and giving back some captured territory, removing Jewish settlers to give land to Palestinians. Then Hamas came about with their hard-line rhetoric and it turned bad - and we see the result.

I was a roadmap offered to the Fatah government, which were co-operating. Hamas rejected the whole process and as such Palestine still does not exist.
