Road Trip: Mini Countryman Cooper D with Autohome

Cars.co.za journalist and photographer, Gero Lilleike, recently set off on a camping adventure on the Garden Route in a Mini Countryman Cooper D automatic equipped with a bespoke Autohome roof tent. How well does the Autohome roof tent work in this application? Read Gero’s report and watch his travel video to find out...

I love the outdoors and camping is one of my favourite pastimes, so when the opportunity presented itself to test the Autohome roof tent, which is specifically designed for the Mini Countryman, I simply couldn’t pass up the chance. With my wife by my side, we packed the Countryman Cooper D and set off for the Garden Route for a weekend of camping and adventure.

Practicality and performance

The Mini Countryman was to be our home and thankfully it’s the largest vehicle in Mini’s line-up, because we needed as much space as we could get to load up luggage, camping necessities and a surfboard. With the split rear seats folded down, there was more than enough room for our stuff.

While Cars.co.za had previously tested the Countryman Cooper D automatic (read that review here), I was keen to stretch its legs on the open road.

The 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine under the bonnet is the only diesel offering in the entire Mini range and it really is a great engine for a road trip. It’s a punchy unit with 110 kW and 330 Nm on tap and, in this case, makes use of a 6-speed automatic transmission to drive the front wheels. It’s not an all-out adventure vehicle, as it doesn’t have 4x4 capability, but it manages just fine on gravel roads of average condition.

The diesel-powered Countryman has a good dose of grunt on the highway and executes overtaking manoeuvres easily and effectively. More so, the steering has a positive feel and its ride quality is comfortable with a hint of firmness that makes it a pleasure to drive, especially on a long journey.

Lugging the Autohome on the long haul

With the Autohome fitted to a set of roof racks, I was curious to see how this added piece of kit would impact on the driving experience as well as fuel economy. At highway speed, the Autohome generates a fair amount of wind noise (audible through the sunroof), but that is to be expected.

More importantly, I expected fuel consumption would suffer as a result of increased drag, but that was not the case. In fact, the Cooper D performed very well and returned an indicated average of 6.9 L/100 km over the course of our 1 200-km road trip, which is more than acceptable for a compact SUV laden with luggage and adorned with a roof-mounted box. Mini claims a fuel consumption figure of 4.7 L/100km for this derivative.

Convenient camping

As a surfer, I wanted to camp as close as possible to the ocean so that I could have easy access to the surf – the Buffalo Bay Caravan Park was perfect and also happens to be regarded as one of the best camping sites on the Garden Route. It was a no-brainer!

Conventional camping requires you to unpack all your camping gear, pitch your tent and set up camp, all of which takes time.

That procedure isn’t necessary with the Autohome roof tent because all you have to do is to find a suitable parking spot and simply unpack what you need. The Countryman serves as virtually all the storage space you need and, as a result, your campsite is cleaner and uncluttered and, because of the added convenience, you have more time to enjoy your surroundings and to do the things that you want to do, like surfing, in my case.

It also means it’s far easier to pack up when you want to leave. When you are done, you simply drive away without having to break down a campsite. It’s simple and convenient camping, just the way I like it…

How does the Mini Autohome work?

The Mini Autohome is easy to use and quick to pitch and close. Simply undo the 3 safety clips and push the front and rear roof section upwards. The 4 gas springs will pitch the tent automatically!

Inside the tent, you will find a height-adjustable aluminium ladder (with safety clamps), which you position next to the vehicle to access the tent. The tent can comfortably sleep 2 adults and is equipped with a high-density crushproof mattress, pillows and a touch-sensitive LED light with a 12V battery included. Storage inside the tent is made easy with an elastic roof net and 4 fold-away pockets for smaller items.

The tent material itself is made from a light, weather-proof and tear-proof material that expels moisture/condensation and there are 2 doors and 2 windows with dense mosquito netting, so the tent can be easily aired while you have a first-class view of your surroundings.

Breaking the tent down is just as easy. By pulling the provided strings down at either end, the tent will collapse and then you simply fasten the safety clips and off you go!

How much does the Mini Autohome cost?

You might be disappointed to learn that Mini South Africa doesn’t offer the Autohome roof tent in South Africa; Mini doesn’t list the roof tent on its official accessories list. But if you really want one, you can order the Mini Autohome roof tent directly from Autohome in Italy, but beware, it costs €3 084 which translates to roughly R48 714, excluding shipping. The Mini Countryman Cooper D automatic is priced at R492 659 (November 2018).

If that is a push too far for you, local roof tent suppliers are also worth considering as they will be more affordable, but the products are not Mini approved and they are arguably not as slick as the Mini Autohome. The Autohome roof tent for the Mini Countryman weighs approximately 58 kg with a volume of 271 litres and is made from 100% fibreglass. The Autohome roof tent is offered in white or black depending on your taste.

The latest generation of the 4-cylinder engine developed for the John Cooper Works models with MINI TwinPower Turbo technology surpasses that of the previous drive by as much as 55 kW/75 hp at maximum output. The new MINI John Cooper Works Clubman turns in an acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, with the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman achieving the same in 5.1 seconds - 1.4 and 1.5 seconds faster than in the respective previous models. The elasticity of the two models has never been as impressive as it is now.

Mini Countryman and Clubman JCW bumped up to 302bhp

Mini updates its larger John Cooper Works models with significant power upgrade, bringing Cupra Ateca-baiting performance

Mini has upgraded the hot John Cooper Works variants of its Countryman crossover and Clubman estate, making them significantly more powerful and faster.

Claimed to be the most powerful Minis approved for road use to date, the cars pack a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine that has been boosted from the 228bhp of the outgoing models to 302bhp, with torque rising by 74lb ft to 332lb ft.

The upgrade enables a 0-62mph time of 4.9sec for the Clubman and 5.1sec for the Countryman – 1.4sec and 1.5sec quicker than the previous models respectively. Both top out at a governed 155mph. For reference, the rival Cupra Ateca puts out 296bhp and manages the sprint to 62mph in 5.2sec.

Both the Clubman and Countryman JCW feature ALL4 four-wheel drive as standard, as before. Mild styling tweaks include larger air intakes, plus aero-optimised roof spoilers and mirror caps

Mini unveils new Clubman and Countryman John Cooper Works

Mini has lifted the wraps off its new John Cooper Works Clubman and Countryman; billed as the company's most powerful models ever approved for road use.

Both performance variants have been equipped with the firm’s latest generation four-cylinder petrol engine featuring TwinPower turbo technology. Coupled to an eight-speed steptronic sports transmission, with integrated mechanical diff, this unit sends 225 kW and 450 N.m of torque to all four wheels. That's that’s 55 kW and 100 N.m more than the previous 2,0-litre unit.

Mini claims a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 4,9 seconds for the Clubman JCW (1,4 seconds quicker than before), while the Countryman JCW now completes the sprint in 5,1 seconds, shedding 1,5 seconds off its forebear’s time. New Mini Countryman 2020 facelift seen in disguise

Mini will update its Mercedes GLA rival with mid-life revisions: reveal likely in the first half of next year

Mini will follow up the updates to the rest of its range with a revised Countryman due next year.

The crossover is the British maker’s newest model, but was first launched in 2017, so 2020 falls perfectly in line with the usual timeframe of a mid-cycle update.

Prototypes have been spotted with disguised front and rear ends, so we’re expecting mild revisions to the grille, bumpers and lights as part of a minor facelift.

Pricing! 225 kW Mini JCW Countryman heading to South Africa

The turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine under the bonnet of the Mini JCW Countryman now churns out 225 kW and 450 N.m (the latter on tap from 1 750 to 4 500 r/min), representing significant increases of 55 kW and 100 N.m over the maximum outputs of the outgoing version.

In conjunction with an eight-speed Steptronic sports transmission (complete with a mechanical differential lock on the front axle) and an all-wheel drive, that’s enough for a sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in a claimed 5,1 seconds (a full 1,5 seconds quicker than before) and a top speed of 250 km/h.

Of course, the Mini JCW Countryman furthermore boasts a specifically engineered chassis as well as additional reinforcement modifications for the body structure, engine connection and chassis fastenings.

So, how much are we looking at here? Well, the JCW-badged Countryman will be priced at R708 000 when it reaches local shores (for the record, the outgoing 170 kW version was last priced at R684 872). Meanwhile, the JCW Clubman (which we’ve already driven in Germany) uses the same BMW Group powertrain but will cost you R642 000.

Driven: Mini's new 225kW Countryman JCW is fast, but too firm

Should you buy it?

Look, at R708 000 in standard guise, the Countryman JCW is not cheap. It's quirky yes, and it provides a driving experience that you won't get in other compact crossovers.

Firm, taut, solid. These are the sensations you'll get in it and that's probably fine if you're after something that's premium-badged, but if you travel on bumpy roads on a daily basis you're going to get annoyed after a few weeks.

At this price point, the Countryman JCW has some serious competition, such as the Golf R, BMW's own M135i and the much cheaper (albeit smaller) Audi Q3.

It really boils down to the fact that the Countryman JCW walks its own path as a funky crossover with a raised ride-height and it is different enough to the run-of-the-mill hatches and SUVs you can buy at this price level.

It's not a bad car, and if you are after something different for the parkade at work then it's worth a look, but don't discount other quirky vehicles (or larger vehicles) such as Hyundai's surprisingly good Tucson Sport or Citroen's new C5 Aircross.

Its robust vehicle concept, an ample, versatile interior with five fully-fledged seats and the optional ALL4 all-wheel drive system make it an unmistakable all-round talent that inspires typical MINI enthusiasm not just in day-to-day traffic but also on long-distance trips and even when venturing into unsurfaced terrain. The progressive character of the new MINI Countryman is reflected in a model variant with plug-in hybrid drive as well as in new digital MINI Connected services. What is more, the desire for individualisation is catered to more radically than ever before with the range of additional optional extras and Original MINI Accessories.

With the new MINI Countryman, the tradition-steeped British brand continues to pursue its conquest of additional target groups. Even in its first generation, the MINI Countryman was a pioneer. As the first model with an exterior length of more than four metres, four doors, a large tailgate, five seats and all-wheel drive, it laid the foundations for the brand's highly successful advance into the premium compact segment. The MINI Countryman now accounts for almost 30 per cent of the brand's new registrations worldwide.
