Bigger 2023 Mini Countryman to get EV and hot Cooper S versions

Mini's SUV will be built alongside its BMW X1 sibling and share its range of petrol, PHEV and EV powertrains

Mini's all-important third-generation Countryman, which will play a crucial role in the brand's pure-electric reinvention, has broken cover on public roads for the first time.

Due in 2023, the big-selling crossover will join the closely related BMW X1 in being offered with a choice of pure-electric and combustion powertrains, and will be built on the same line as its X1 sibling in Leipzig, Germany. The current-generation Countryman is made in the Netherlands under contract by VDL Nedcar.

The SUV duo will move across to an evolved version of the front-driven UKL architecture that underpins the current models. Called FAAR, it can accommodate pure-combustion, hybrid and all-electric powertrains and will provide the basis for the successors to most of the BMW Group's compact models.

RoadTrip | New Countryman JCW meets its 60-year-old precursor, the Maxi Mini

• The latest Mini Countryman JCW is now available in South Africa.

• Tracing its history, RoadTrip goes back on the car's path and its local production.

• Only six of the latest Countryman JCW models are destined for South Africa.

A year after the debut of the Classic Mini in 1959, British Motor Corporation (BMC) introduced a Mini Van, followed by an estate car with all-round glazing, marketed as the Austin Seven Countryman and the Morris Mini Traveller. In addition, a version was created in September 1961 that would contribute to the legendary status of the classic Mini like no other - the Mini Cooper.

Racing car designer John Cooper identified the sporting talent of the classic Mini at an early stage and built a version with engine output increased from 25 to 40kW and appropriate chassis modifications. Ultimately, power was further enhanced with the Mini Cooper S packing 52kW.

A special 170kW edition of the Mini John Cooper Works three-door hatch has been released to mark the anniversary. It will be available here as the Mini John Cooper Works. Global production is limited to just 740 units (this number refers to the starting number 74, which the classic Mini Cooper wore on its first successful racetrack appearance). Six are destined for South Africa.

GROUP TEST: Mini JCW Countryman and Audi RS Q3 Sportback

TEST SUMMARY

Both Audi’s smallest RS Q offering and Mini’s most potent crossover have their merits. If we had to differentiate between the duo, the RS Q3 is the better sounding and more performance-orientated crossover, although the hesitancy off the line during our acceleration tests did take some lustre off its performance. The Mini JCW Countryman, on the other hand, exuded character from the first press of the starter button and was entertaining to drive more of the time. The performance gap between the two was marginal and merited a four-star rating for both. That said, we cannot ignore the Audi’s steeper price tag. Scores tallied, it’s the JCW Countryman that, by an absolute whisker, receives the CAR team’s winning vote. In this instance, at least, the JCW Countryman proved that less can indeed be more.

New 2023 Mini Countryman PHEV to be firm's most powerful car

Plug-in hybrid Countryman will use a 322bhp set-up from the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer

The next-generation Mini Countryman plug-in hybrid, due next year, will be the BMW-owned brand’s most powerful series-production model yet.

The Countryman will share its FAAR front-driven architecture with the all-new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and be produced alongside that model and the upcoming X1 crossover in Leipzig, Germany. It is set to use the same range of petrol and plug-in hybrid powertrains, the most potent of which will be a four-wheel-drive PHEV set-up with a combined output that shades even that of the current Mini JCW GP hot hatchback.

The powertrain will pair a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with a 174bhp electric motor for a combined output of 322bhp, making the model substantially quicker than today’s 217bhp Countryman Cooper S E All4. A 14.2kWh (usable) battery will supply it with around 55 miles of EV range, a near-100% increase. It can be fully charged in 2.5 hours from a 7.4kWh charger.

New, bigger Mini Countryman spied in the snow – even less mini than before

Mini’s newest not so mini new, bigger Countryman has been spied testing in the northern parts of Scandinavia with the winter season well on its way to wrapping things up. As a result, manufacturers are all over the show finishing up winter testing on upcoming models.

Motor1’s spy team have captured the third-generation of Mini’s SUV being put through its paces in snowy climes, still covered in as much camouflage as when we first learned of the new model’s existence in October 2021. The crossover will almost certainly be larger than the model which it replaces. Based on BMW’s FAAR platform which it shares with the next X1, as well as the 2 Series Active Tourer, the new model could be as much as 20 xm longer than the F60 Countryman, which of course results in more space for passenger and increased luggage capacity.

Mini Countryman Cooper S ALL4 Untamed Edition

With its versatility, hallmark driving fun and distinctive style, the MINI Countryman has developed a particularly attractive standing in the premium compact segment. The new Untamed Edition available from March 2022 onwards showcases the robust appearance of the brand's largest model to optimum effect, while its exclusive design and equipment features emphasise its character as a stylish all-rounder.

In the MINI Cooper S Countryman ALL4 in the Untamed Edition, all this is combined with a particularly spirited engine. The power of the 131 kW/178 hp 4-cylinder engine with MINI TwinPower Turbo technology ensures sporty driving fun not just in urban traffic but also on spontaneous excursions into the countryside. With the optional all-wheel drive system ALL4, maximum traction and driving stability is ensured when moving over rough terrain, too.

In the Untamed Edition, the MINI Cooper S Countryman ALL4 goes further than ever before in encouraging the driver to venture beyond the city limits to explore new roads and pathways. The exclusive body finish in Momentum Grey metallic showcases the compellingly modelled surfaces of the edition model in striking style, while the robust design features of the MINI ALL4 exterior underscore its untamed character - also reflected in the edition's name. The new body finish appears on the lower air intake surround including the suggested underride guard, the air curtain inserts in the front apron and the side sills, as well as on the reflector inserts and the lower insert in the rear apron. The background to the MINI brand logo on the bonnet and tailgate is in Momentum Grey metallic.

The MINI Cooper SE Countryman ALL4 excels with maximum traction and driving stability even off paved roads. With an electric range of 51 kilometres, the MINI Cooper SE Countryman ALL4 can also be driven in sporty style in urban environments without producing any local emissions.

Mini Countryman review

WHAT'S THE VERDICT?

“The new Countryman is a sophisticated piece of engineering, with a solid feel and precise driving manners”

OK, line up the gags here. The jibes about Minis that are Maxis. About crossovers that never tackle more than a school kerb. About the cartoon infantilism of Mini's design language. But guess what, they're all old and threadbare and were actually never very funny in the first place. Let's move on. The new Countryman is a sophisticated piece of engineering, with a solid feel and precise driving manners.

It handles decently, and the ride is at least as good as can be expected for a small crossover. Performance is refined (rather than electrifying) short of the JCW, where it tasks itself with a major jump towards the horizon. You can spec it with a good selection of driver aids, but it stops well short of gimmickry or ill-conceived semi-autonomy.

The interior combines flamboyant design with very sound ergonomics. Crucially, it's roomy, both in the seats and the boot. And the cabin is versatile too. Oh and it avoids the silly barn-door boot-lids of the Clubman with a traditional lift up, one-piece rear hatch. It’s not the biggest of the crossover crowd, but it’ll do well with an average-sized family.

Because of the extra weight of ALL4 we'd think hard before speccing it, although it is standard on the JCW. At least unless we were going to do a lot of towing or hitting really slippery surfaces regularly. Otherwise, all-season tyres, combined with the handy ground clearance, would likely see a front-drive Countryman through most Countryfile-type uses.

And since the petrols, especially the three-cylinder Cooper, are lighter again, as well as smoother, they're an attractive idea more in keeping with the lithe Mini spirit. So there’s a lot to be said for just keeping it simple and sticking to the Cooper S petrol manual. The JCW is worth a look if you really need pace, but otherwise, mid-spec is best.

New 2023 Mini Countryman grows to go after Audi Q3

Electric and petrol options for next-gen Countryman, which bulks up and gets a bold redesign

The new, second-generation Mini Countryman is a larger and heavily redesigned proposition, which will enter the fiercely fought mid-sized crossover segment in 2023 with a choice of combustion and electric power.

The Mini Countryman will share its FAAR front-driven architecture with the all-new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the new BMW X1 crossover, and be built alongside them in Leipzig, Germany. It is set to bring petrol and pure-electric drivetrain options, shunning plug-in hybrid power for its second-generation, while a diesel version will be offered in markets outside the UK.

The electric car is expected to use a similar drivetrain set-up to its BMW twin, which comes with a motor mounted on axle axle for 4WD, 309bhp and 0-62mph in 5.7sec - which, if replicated, would make the Mini Countryman Electric the brand's most powerful car yet.

Meanwhile, the pure-combustion car will offer either 168bhp 1.5-litre three-cylinder or 215bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engines, both with 48V mild-hybrid technology.

BMW readying the production of all-electric Mini Countryman in Germany

In a press release, BMW announced that preparation for the production of the upcoming Mini Countryman is in full swing. The crossover will come in two variants - with a combustion engine and in a fully-electric configuration and will kick off production as early as this year.

The facility that would take on the task is BMW's Leipzig plant, that's one of the most sustainable production facilities in the world. So according to BMW, this is the perfect place for the first all-electric Countryman. Interestingly enough, this is going to be the first Mini produced and assembled entirely in Germany.

The Leipzig plant is also responsible for the production of the BMW 1 Series, 2 Series Gran coupe and 2 Series Active Tourer. In addition, the plant is planned to produce E-components as well.
