Is Mitsubishi working on a Raptor-rivalling Triton?
The boldly facelifted Mitsubishi Triton double cab is set to reach South African showrooms soon, but there is potentially more excitement on the way from the nameplate.
We say potentially because what you see in the teaser picture above is a concept vehicle that’s set to make its debut at the Bangkok Motor Show next Tuesday, March 26, and as such there is no word yet on what the production plans might be.

Triton Absolute is Mitsubishi's Raptor rival
Forget about the Athlete, what you want is a new Triton Absolute.
Look and learn. This appears to be what Mitsubishi’s marketing staff have done with regards to the success Ford has achieved with the hype around its Range Raptor.
There appears to be no saturation point for limited-edition bakkies and to ensure the latest Triton is not forgotten amidst the interest generated by Ford’s Ranger Raptor and Toyotas Hilux GR Sport double-cabs, Mitsubishi’s built an Absolute.
Debuted in Bangkok, Thailand, this week – the Absolute is a significantly more stylized version of the facelifted fifth-generation Triton, which is due to launch in South Africa within the next month. Built as a customer and marketing research project, Mitsubishi has given itself a year to gauge public opinion on this radical Triton, using that timeframe to evaluate a possible business case for these bakkies.
The Absolute’s design details are thoroughly different from a current production Triton. On the roof, you’ll find a carry-rail system which also features integrated LED spotlights, whilst the wheel arches are noticeably more flared, a requirement for the larger off-road specification beadlock wheels and Falken Wildpeak tyres.

Earlier this year, CARmag.co.za reported that an Australian-based executive of Mitsubishi admitted that the automaker sees an "opportunity" to build a hardcore version of the facelifted Triton bakkie to rival the Ford Ranger Raptor.
James Tol, head of product planning at Mitsubishi Motors Australia, told motoring.com.au the automaker “will talk about that down the track".
Now, the Japanese firm has lifted the wraps off the Triton Absolute - the most rugged version in its bakkie line-up - at the 2019 Bangkok International Motor Show.
According to Mitsubishi, the Absolute embodies the same "uncompromising nature", which underlies its lesser stablemates. However, these characteristics have now been amplified to make the Absolute "more solid and more rugged", and the company believes it will resonate strongly with pick-up enthusiasts.

Refreshed Mitsubishi Triton bakkie: check out SA pricing
The dramatically facelifted Mitsubishi Triton was revealed back in November 2018. And now, ahead of the launch of this updated bakkie in South Africa, we have managed to unearth local pricing.
At launch, the line-up will comprise four double-cab derivatives, each employing the Japanese brand’s familiar 2,4-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine. As before, outputs come in at 133 kW (at 3 500 r/min) and 430 N.m (at 2 500 r/min).
Interestingly, pricing is effectively unchanged over the equivalent outgoing versions, with the range kicking off at R509 995 and running through to R589 995.
The updated Triton will be offered in 4x2 and 4x4 guise, with drive directed to the wheels via either a six-speed manual gearbox or a new six-speed automatic transmission (the outgoing self-shifter featured five ratios). The updated Triton boasts a 3100 kg braked towing capacity, plus an approach angle of 28º, a departure angle of 23º and a ramp breakover angle of 25º (and ground clearance of 220 mm).

Mechanical changes
The 2019 Mitsubishi Triton has received numerous mechanical changes. Braking performance and feel have improved thanks to the addition of larger front discs and calliper pistons. The ride has been improved by the addition of larger rear dampers which contain more damping oil.
The engine has been carried over from the outgoing model. It's the proven 2.4-litre MIVEC turbodiesel motor. With 133 kW and 430 Nm, it's claimed to consume 7.5 L/100 km (7.6 L/100 km for the 6-speed auto).
In terms of offroad capability, the Triton features the Super Select II 4WD System, Electronic Off-road Assistance, Hill Descent Control, Rear Diff Lock and has a 3 100 kg tow rating. There's a ground clearance of 220 mm, 28º Approach Angle, 23º Departure Angle and a 25º Ramp Breakover Angle.
The new Super Select II 4WD system is used with an Off-road Mode available on the automatic transmission derivatives. The off-road mode has GRAVEL, MUD/SNOW, SAND and ROCK (in 4LLc only) settings for improved traction on different road surfaces. The 4H drive mode distributes torque in a 40:60 ratio between the front and rear wheels via a Torsen limited-slip device for safer on-road driving in slippery conditions such as gravel and wet roads. 4HLc (4WD High range with CD locked) distributes torque equally between the front and rear wheels for improved traction on sand, dirt and snow. 4LLc (4WD Low range with CD locked) provides greater torque for extreme off-road conditions.

The entry-level variant costs R509 995, with prices rising to R589 995 for this top-spec, four-wheel-drive automatic version. All variants are sold with a three-year/100 000 km warranty and a five-year/90 000 km service plan (with intervals of 10 000 km) as standard.
The standard safety equipment list includes seven airbags, ABS with EBD, a reinforced body construction with side-impact protection bars, and Isofix child-seat anchors.
According to a Mitsubishi Motors South Africa representative, only the top-spec derivative will be available at launch, with the other three variants set to arrive in the country at a later date.
Mitsubishi SA says it’s confident the refreshed Triton will find a place in our market, despite the dominance of the Hilux and Ranger, and to a lesser degree, the Isuzu D-Max (the firm adds the production version of the recently revealed Triton Absolute is on its agenda, too). Still, just how popular the new model will be remains to be seen. One thing is for certain, though: with its striking new looks, it won’t go unnoticed.
