Mitsubishi Triton beefed up for Aussie 'SuperUtes' series

Mitsubishi's latest Triton has been beefed up for the 2019 ECB ‘SuperUtes’ Series, an Australian championship where modified production bakkies, or ‘Utes, compete against each other over eight weekends in a total of 24 races.

Mitsubishi Motors Australia (Team Triton Racing) is running three vehicles this season, driven by Elliot Barbour, Cameron Crick and Craig Dontas, while double Dakar rally champion Toby Price will also drive for the team in select rounds of the championship.

Got more boost

Based on the standard Mitsubishi Triton, the SuperUte versions are powered by a modified version of the stock 2.4-litre turbodiesel engine, which retains its aluminium engine block and pistons but gains uprated camshafts, a modified oil sump, new injectors and larger fuel rails.

The engine also receives a larger GTurbo high-flow turbocharger, a larger intercooler, an upgraded radiator for additional cooling and a Motec engine management system.

A bespoke Torqit three-inch exhaust system is fitted from the turbo backwards, while the manifold is retained from the standard Triton.

Producing 257kW of track-ripping power and a stump-pulling 677Nm of torque, the Mitsubishi Triton SuperUte can reach 100km/h from a standstill in under 3.5 seconds and reach a top speed ‘in excess’ of 240km/h, they claim.

The Mitsubishi Triton 2.4 DI-D 4x4 automatic is priced from R589 995 and is sold with a 3-year/100 000 km warranty and a 5-year/90 000 km service plan.

Verdict

This latest-spec Triton is by far the best-looking version of the (if not a) Japanese bakkie that has ever been sold in the South African new vehicle market. If you are looking to buy a head-turning double cab, then this is certainly worthy of your attention. Its interior styling doesn’t quite match its flashy exterior, but the Triton comes equipped with a reasonable number of features and offers good levels of comfort and convenience.

The newcomer offers willing, if not stellar, performance, in combination with commendable fuel efficiency and an excellent ride quality. As before, the Triton strikes a good balance between being a comfortable adventure lifestyle vehicle and serving as a capable workhorse when it's called to do so.

With high-end derivatives of the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Volkswagen Amarok, Mercedes X-Class, Nissan Navara etc. priced far north of R600k, the Triton is a tough-as-nails offering that represents good value at its price point. In its latest guise, it deserves to fare better against its rivals.

Fresh sketches suggest new Mitsubishi Triton flagship is coming

Fresh patent sketches uncovered by an Australian publication suggest Mitsubishi is close to bringing a new flagship version of its Triton double-cab bakkie – likely based on the rugged Absolute concept – to market.

The folks over at CarAdvice discovered the trademark application images (head over to their site to see them), which show the potential production vehicle in two forms.

The first is a fairly subtle upgrade over the standard (recently facelifted) Triton, while the second features various items – such as an integrated sports bar and railings – first seen on the Absolute show vehicle revealed at the 2019 Bangkok International Motor Show back in March.

The pre-facelift is essentially the same vehicle.

Mechanically the facelift doesn't change much other than the 6-speed autobox. Visually styling is a major update, updated tech, trim etc

Should I buy one?

Double-cab pick-ups like L200 have been improving in looks, capability and equipment over the past few years, and the competitor set has expanded, too, notably with the arrival of the plush and pricey X-Class. Mitsubishi knew it needed to do something decisive, and its changes to the L200 look serious and successful. It's comparable with the best in the class again.

It also retains some advantages. L200s have always been impressively tough and reliable, and Mitsubishi's test routine admirably demonstrated this. The firm's dealers understand pick-up buyers and their unique demands and particularly value them.

In short, the sixth-generation L200, especially the plush Barbarian X, represents a strong bid by Mitsubishi to maintain a prominent place in the world of 'civilised' pick-ups, and it deserves to succeed.

Next-gen Mitsubishi Triton: V6 engine unlikely ... but hybrid is on the cards

The global head of Mitsubishi Motors has suggested the next-generation Triton won't likely be offered with a V6 engine, while also hinting a hybrid powertrain is on the cards.

Ashwani Gupta, who was appointed as the Japanese brand’s chief operating officer earlier in 2019, told Australian media the next-gen Triton bakkie and Pajero Sport SUV would in all likelihood be electrified in some way.

“On Triton and Pajero Sport, obviously we believe that they will need electrification. One of the core strengths of Mitsubishi is to have electrification and ICE (internal combustion engine) in the same car, so we don’t have a policy to develop a dedicated electrified car,” Gupta said, according to motoring.com.au.

“We have the technology and the know-how to use the same platform to be adaptable to ICE, to be adaptable to electrification like you see today with Outlander PHEV,” he added.

Gupta added Mitsubishi had yet to determine whether a regular hybrid arrangement or a plug-in hybrid powertrain would be employed.
