With a strange smile I can just see how Death greets it.

This is insane... the thing barks at nothing at random hours (day and night) then I have to go downstairs and silence it, otherwise it will just keep at it. It woke me twice last night, and I really needed a good night's rest.

Is there a polite way to ask my neighbour to do something about it? Or do I just tell him to silence it before I do?
Seriously, if people can't train their dogs they shouldn't own them.

I had a similar problem and I solved it thus:

Purchase one of those water guns that suck up large quantities of water.
Dog barks go outside and spray. Works like a charm and its quite humane.

If my neighbours dog barks now, I simply soak him and he is quiet for quite a while.

Just don't let your neighbour find out. :)

Phone them up to tell them that their dog is barking.

Just check first that it is their dog. A neighbour phoned in the early hours to inform me that our dog, which had died six months earlier, was barking.

Also keep an eye out, dogs don't generally bark for nothing.

We had a problem with a neighbour who used to moan about our dogs but they helped catch housebreakers who broke into the houses around us and kept folks cars safe to such a point that people would argue about parking in front of our gate.

That house is sold now and the dogs have moved so we're wishing the fool who moaned happy housebreaking as no-one else has bothered with dogs in years in that neighbourhood.

Did anyone else suddenly remember Pet Sematary? That must be a weird phonecall.

Well, I've already managed to put the fear of death in the dog everytime he sees me. But it still requires effort on my side to silence it. I need a more permanent solution.

By law I can take up the case, and if found guilty they will be fined R20,000. Any of the other neighbours will happily testify (or the poor joggers who gets attacked on a daily basis)

Maybe the dog has too much energy and needs a walk ????

Also if you use a watergun on the dog, and the owner gets wind, you will get into a lot of ***...

You could actully got to a pet store and buy some chews/bones/treats and give them to the dog.... a hoof or chew will last it a decent amount of time and probably keep it quiet for a few hours.

Really? From who?

To be honest I thought the OP would go the same way as this story I read last night. The neighbour's daughter.

Speak to the owner in a friendly manner rather than get up all in his face.
How does the owner sleep if the dogs barks all night?
How long does the dog bark for?
Is it constant or just when the mutt sees or hears something.

Bwhahahahahahahahaha.. that would make an interesting story.

-I'll try to word it kindly. Because I get along well with them and would like to keep it that way.
-Dunno how they sleep / how it doesn't bother them... but it bothers everyone else in the street.
-Depends.. might be 10-15 minutes, but by that time I've dragged myself from whatever activity to silence it. To give you an idea of the volume, even in my study with my gaming headset on, it's barking is still a lot more than some background noise.
-It barks at everything and nothing. So if something moves in the street it barks like there's no tomorrow, and continues well after the object in the street is gone. And often it lays under the tree, vaguely gazing in all directions and just barks.

Take my advice and water cannon the mutt. I'm telling you it works like a bomb. :)

yeah once in a while my dog goes on barking spree as well and the neighbour once came out to find people on the side of his house

and normally there are people walking all over so all the dogs bark

cant blame the dogs

That I can understand. It's ear-shattering when some lass tries to sell handbags from gate to gate. (Every house in our street has dogs) So, if there's something worth seeing, the collection of Bio-Alarms will let even the dead know about it. But when one dog is just barking.. it's safe to say that it has a loose wire that needs to be mended.

ok yeah then its different but we have a squad that barks and mine is the loudest :(

If the dog's owner will not co-operate, and the dog barks for more than 10 mins non-stop, you can complain to Council about it (at least in Cape Town). I would assume that most local municipalities have similar by-laws

That's how we train our dogs not to bark and it works a treat - I've even gone so far as to ask the neighbour to help out.

So essentially you're rewarding a dog for barking incessantly and training it to accept food from strangers. I'd hose you down if you tried that. ;)

if you get on well with them speak to them about it. i know it's a bit embarrassing but do it. we had a similar situation with german shepherds barking all day at nothing. we mentioned it to the owners who put a stop to it and everybody's still on good terms.
