The new Telkom

Freedom to compete. Those three words appeared in large letters on Telkom CEO Reuben September’s slides at the company’s interim results presentation on Monday. With its divorce from Vodacom imminent, Telkom is on a mission to reinvent itself.

It was just on his presentation rpm... actions speak louder than words on a slide.

Telkom on a mission to reinvent itself?

Come on! You can't fix a complete failure.
I'll eat this thread if they even bother to drop prices before the end of the year!

been to telkom twice now in the last 2 weeks to query why 5gigs vanished from my 3 gig cap, and both times telkom could not help me.

last week all the systems were down and this week they cannot do it online or on the phone i have to email them.

My bet is that the changes of the past three years in telecoms are going to be eclipsed by what happens in the next three.

I'll bet on that ;)

The company hasn’t yet announced tariff plans for voice calls on its wireless network but September has hinted strongly that prices for calls between its own mobile and fixed-line networks will be quite a bit cheaper than calls between its fixed-line network and other mobile network operators. This is because it won’t have to pay the high interconnect fees imposed by MTN and Vodacom.

Only natural, what else could be expected from an anti-competitive monopoly.

Anyone got a time machine so that I can go to 2012 and see if we have FTTH? :D

I don't care how much they re-invent themselves I will never forget that they got to this position of power by screwing me and this country for the past 20 years. The only reason they are now looking to re-invent themselves is because their monopoly is finally under threat and they have been hauled into this "reinvention" phase kicking, screaming, bribing, threatening and suing all the way.
Telkom need to be part of a TRC before SA's will see them as nothing more than rapists.

Telkom service and attitude towards me as a client while operating as a state-owned and protected monopoly will ensure that I will pay a significant premium NOT to use their service and when any other alternative is available on principle boycott them.

With over 20 years of dealing with SAPO/Telkom and all their arrogance, ineptitude and obstructiveness, i reckon they could "reinvent" themselves as Jesus and I'd still keep to my atheism. Leopards. Spots. Bargepoles.

Once I have choices I will never back Telkom!!!

Those ******* idiots can't do ****! They can ******* rot in hell for all i ******* care! Bloody ******! Re-invent my *ss!

Please, drop the prices enough or offer a bigger cap than anyone else and everyone claiming they would never ever support Telkom will go rushing back with money in hand....

As has been said elsewhere there is no loyalty... it all boils down to finances!

Such a pitty the sentiment of the posts so far on this strain is not reflective of most screwed Telkom clients is SA. Most are just too glad to have voice and is thankful to pay..... I bet Telkom even get letters of praise. And yet they can and will reinvent themselves with the billions extorted from their clients who had the (NO) freedom of choice???? So now suddenly there is "Freedom to Compete"

They cannot reinvent themselves without replacing most of their staff IMO - the work ethic is embedded at Telkom house...

Will be a cold day in hell before i have anything t do with telkom

Telkom? Change? Pfft yeah, right. Only because they're know they're going to get into deep water once Neotel and the others start to build up and get bigger.

I would love to see the day Telkom "reinvents" themselves.

What I am wondering is that if they terminate calls on their fixed line network from their mobile network and they dont charge an interconnect fee that is the same as what they charge the other guys. Do you honestly believe MTN or Voda will be succesfull in bringing them to task? I mean it only took the CC 5 odd years to rule on their anti competitive behaviour last time.

Mobile License

As far as I know the companies currently holding a "MOBILE" license are:

Vodacom
MTN
Cell C

Mobile as I understand means the ability to hand calls over between base stations.

Not even Neotel has this as an option (yet), so I am not sure why Telkom beleives they have a "mobile" license?

I can see this being a competition commission challange for them.

Cross subsidy of customers .....

They have/had a monopoly and they couldn't make it work.

Vodacom was the most profitable thing about them. I'm going to enjoy watching them melt down, I think we've all waited long enough.
