This is so true, it's a daily occurrence in SA. My mother works in the courts and the cases she has to do sometimes are unthinkable.

What intrigues me is why the rapist will take all his clothes off and incl socks and shoes to rape in a public place ???

Here's what we know. A naked guy with blood in a toilet. If he's guilty the courts will find that his DNA was found in her as well as internal injuries. For now all we have are second hand accounts claiming rape.

Perhaps he didn't want to risk the girl's blood on his clothes.

It is strange indeed but he said he was taking a crap. I know some people take all their clothes off when taking a crap at home but it would be pretty weird if you do it in a public toilet.

Man was naked. Kid was also naked. Toilet was locked. When the door finally opened, kid was "bleeding from groin area".

Why was the door locked (or jammed shut)?
 
Or perhaps he is just a sick @!$#@ and does not think rationally.....

That little word right there is the problem in this equation.

Dros doesn’t magically replace parenting. Nobody does no matter where you go for what you do.

Could they have done better? Maybe, but there is a direct cost vs quality involved then which would put them out of business.

Should they have done better? Certainly not.
 
One thing kind of unrelated but related is that I’ve always found the lack of kiddie size toilets or separate facilities in these places quite lacking.

After this event I ponder why it’s not just all in the kids play area itself for direct access.

At the same time there are so many great made for kids places that suffer for a lack of support because people have to have their steak and their dop at the Dros or Spur or whatever.

It’s not about the kids at all, it’s about the parents taking a “night off” and that is the crux of the problem really.

I've been avoiding posting on this topic in general. What happened is beyond sad and disturbing.

I feel though that the sentiment of your comment is correct. The parents responsibility towards the child can't be abdicated to some child minder irrespective of how convenient it is.

Quite frankly you could replace Dros with any of the other restaurants that operated on a similar basis: Spur, Papachinos, John Dory's, Panarottis or a multitude of independents with a play area.

The principle remains the same. A a parent your child is your responsibility.

You could go further and replace it with anything that isn’t even a restaurant.

Yesterday I went to HiQ to do tyre rotation and alignment and I walked out and went to do some shopping and came back later to the waiting room.

There was a mom sitting on her phone the entire time kid running wild between her and presumably dad in the workshop.

A workshop filled with heavy machinery, cars on lifts and welding equipment and a variety of things that could very easily permanently harm or kill a kid stepping on the wrong thing or touching a button etc.

Parents couldn’t be bothered with the very real and immediate dangers and just let the kid go nuts.

Meanwhile I don’t even bring mine along because that’s too risky even under my supervision.

So I fully understand how the witness felt in this situation of something potentially happening and why he would say nothing up front because I was in the very same situation yesterday. It’s just not my place to parent other people’s children no matter even the consequences, especially when it’s not my establishment.
