Nissan to work with Mercedes on new ‘Z’ sportscar?

An interesting new report from Japan suggests that Nissan will team up with Mercedes-Benz to develop the brand’s next-generation Z-badged sportscar.

While the rumour (courtesy of Response.jp) seems exactly that – a mere rumour – the fact remains that Daimler and the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance already work relatively closely together. A prime example? The Mercedes-Benz X-Class being built on the Nissan Navara’s platform.

The report claimed that the new Nissan sportscar would be unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2019, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the original 240Z.

Response.jp added that the new, two-door Z-badged car would employ both a Mercedes-Benz platform and the Stuttgart-based automaker’s 2,0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine. The flagship model, the report speculated, would be powered by Infiniti’s turbocharged 3,0-litre V6.

The current 370Z, of course, has been in production for nearly ten years, having recently enjoyed the lightest of facelifts.

New Nissan Z sports car to spawn 475bhp V6 Nismo model

Successor to the 370Z confirmed; flagship Nismo version to have hot V6 and four-wheel drive

Nissan has given a 370Z successor the green light.

The new sports car is expected to be shown in coupé guise before the end of next year ahead of UK sales starting in 2020, some 50 years after the original Z car arrived here.

Future generations of the Z model are understood to have been in doubt because of struggling profitability in the sports car segment, an issue felt more widely across the industry. Honda has admitted a similar quandary about an S2000 replacement and Toyota and BMW have teamed up in order to cut costs in the creation of their respective forthcoming Supra and Z4 sports cars.

Nissan design boss Alfonso Albaisa told Autocar last year that he was in favour of a new Z car to replace the 370Z. He said the sports car market was a challenging one but was “personally advocating” a new Z car.

The forthcoming model is known internally as the Z35 – a codename that continues a process started with the Z31 model launched in 1983. It has been twinned with the next Infiniti Q60, with which it will share its rear-wheel-drive platform, engine line-up and electric system, according to senior officials from Nissan.

Dimensionally, the new Z car is set to mirror the more upmarket Q60. At about 4520mm long, 1890mm wide and 1240mm tall, it will be slightly larger than the 370Z, which has been in production since 2009.

As well as a coupé version, Nissan plans a successor to the 370Z Roadster, although this model is unlikely to arrive in showrooms until 2021.

Power for the new coupé and convertible, which insiders suggest could be called the 400Z, is planned to come from Nissan’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine used in a number of existing models, including Infiniti's Q50 and Q60. In standard versions of the new Z car, the engine, which has a 60deg vee angle, is expected to run a similar state of tune to that of the Q60, which develops 399bhp and 350lb ft.

By comparison, the outgoing 370Z has a turbocharged 3.7-litre V6 powerplant that delivers 323bhp and 268lb ft.

The highlight of the new Z-car line-up is set to be a four-wheel-drive Nismo version. Due to arrive in 2021, this is earmarked to run a powered-up version of the turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine with a claimed 475bhp and 451lb ft.

Although it's still early days, Autocar understands that Nissan intends to reveal the styling of the new Z car in concept form at the 2018 Tokyo motor show in October. The definitive production version is then planned to be unveiled at the 2019 Los Angeles motor show.

I'll Believe A Nissan 400Z Is Happening When I See It On Dealer Lots

Another week, another series of rumors and ambiguous reports about a new Nissan Z. See, now that a new Toyota Supra is really happening, everyone’s rightfully wondering if Nissan has what it takes to shake out of its CVT-Rogue Sport-Monday Night Football-Star Wars-March Clearance Deal malaise and offer us something that’s actually worth a damn to drive. Here is the latest story making the rounds, but let me be the first to raise the bull**** flag.

Last week we were wondering—with a great deal of skepticism while noting its plausibility—whether Nissan could team with sometimes-partner Mercedes to develop the next Z, much like Toyota did with BMW. Motor Trend reports this incredibly long shot rumor was shot down by sources within both companies. Darn.

So what’s next? A round of typically vague, unsourced reporting comes to us from the UK’s Autocar. It’s full of good news and big promises! The car will be called the 400Z! A twin-turbo V6 engine with, best of all, a Z-first all-wheel drive 475 horsepower Nismo version—arriving in just three years!

Let’s break down what it says:

Nissan design boss Alfonso Albaisa told Autocar last year that he was in favour of a new Z car to replace the 370Z. He said the sports car market was a challenging one but was “personally advocating” a new Z car.

I get that, and Albaisa makes nice-looking cars, but “personally advocating” doesn’t really mean a damn thing in the grand scheme of product development at a huge corporation. I’ve been “personally advocating” for an iron lung so Jason and also his external other brain can visit the New York office for years now, but it’s been shot down at every turn. Moving on:

The new sports car is expected to be shown in coupé guise before the end of next year ahead of UK sales starting in 2020, some 50 years after the original Z car arrived here.

The forthcoming model is known internally as the Z35 – a codename that continues a process started with the Z31 model launched in 1983. It has been twinned with the next Infiniti Q60, with which it will share its rear-wheel-drive platform, engine line-up and electric system, according to senior officials from Nissan.

And the regular version is just two years away, despite no mules, no prototypes, no concepts, no spy photos or any other evidence that it exists at all. Except, I guess, for the Nissan Z concept that appeared at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show.

Oh wait, that didn’t happen.

Although it’s still early days, Autocar understands that Nissan intends to reveal the styling of the new Z car in concept form at the 2018 Tokyo motor show in October. The definitive production version is then planned to be unveiled at the 2019 Los Angeles motor show.

This Tokyo show! That’s where it will be, for sure. It’ll be there right next to the new Mazda rotary engine. We just have to believe.

Anyway, the implausibility of this story didn’t stop the rubes of the automotive press from running with it:

Snip.JPG

God, that’s depressing.

Anyway, I’ll believe a new Z is happening when I see it. After the fiasco that was the Nissan IDX Concept, I’m not sure Nissan has the means or the will to give us a new Z—and probably not a business case, either.

Actually I’ll believe it when I see it on dealer lots and a salesperson tries to talk me up into a Murano instead.

Nissan design boss confirms 370Z successor is happening

Nissan’s senior vice president for global design has confirmed that the Japanese brand is indeed working on a successor to the decade-old 370Z, saying that he is feeling “huge pressure” to help create something worthy of the “Z” badge.

Speaking to Which Car, Alfonso Albaisa confirmed that planning for the next-generation Z-car had already started.

“The Z-car, oh my god. Huge pressure,” Albaisa told the Australian publication of upcoming successor to the 370Z.

“You can imagine I’m completely excited that I am in the position to work on that,” he added.

As Which Car points out, October 2019 will mark the 50th anniversary of the launch of the original 240Z. And, with the Tokyo Motor Show taking place in that very month, the publication speculates that Nissan could be gearing up to show off an early prototype.

“Democratisation of the sports car, the 240Z … unforgettable,” Albaisa said. “Even in the modern day … the 300ZX of 1989, this Japanese simplicity was impressive.”

Meanwhile, a report from March 2018 suggested that Nissan would team up with Mercedes-Benz to develop the brand’s next-generation Z-badged sportscar.

Nissan 370Z 50th Anniversary Edition

The 2020 Nissan 370Z 50th Anniversary Edition, with a distinctive racing livery appearance, was unveiled to the world in New York - the same city where the original Datsun 240Z made its U.S. debut half a century ago.

Revealed just before the 2019 New York International Auto Show, the special edition pays homage to the #46 BRE (Brock Racing Enterprises) Datsun 240Z that won multiple SCCA National Championships with John Morton behind the wheel.

"It's no secret that the Datsun 240Z started the ball rolling for Japanese sports cars in the U.S.," said Ivan Espinosa, Nissan's corporate vice president of global product strategy and planning. "Almost as well known in Z history is how Peter Brock's competition-tuned 240Z changed the American motorsports landscape. After the BRE 240Z debuted in 1970, Nissan/Datsun became one of the most successful companies in American motorsports - with thousands of victories over the past five decades."

The Nissan 370Z 50th Anniversary Edition

For 2020, the 370Z will be available in four trim levels: the base model, Sport, Sport Touring and the 370Z NISMO. The 370Z Sport model is the foundation for the 50th Anniversary model, as it represents the true enthusiast spirit of the original model.

The exterior of the Nissan 370Z 50th Anniversary Edition mimics the livery of the original BRE race car and is available in two different paint schemes: white with red accents, or silver with black accents. Key BRE design cues include the two signature stripes on the side of the car and the painted trunk, hood, side mirrors and A-pillars in the accent color (red for the white car and black for the silver car). Along the side of the car, a thin line runs from the headlight to the rear glass, culminating in a small triangle inspired by the C-pillar of the Datsun 240Z. The package also includes 50th Anniversary identification on the front fender, anniversary rear badging and special 19-inch alloy wheels with red accents.

Special edition Nissan 370Z celebrates 50 years of Z cars

Nissan launches retro-inspired 370Z in New York to mark half a century of Nissan performance models

Nissan has revealed a limited edition variant of the 370Z coupé to celebrate 50 years of its Z performance range.

The 370Z 50th Anniversary Edition has been unveiled in New York, with a paint scheme inspired by the SCCA-winning BRE 240Z raced by John Morton in the early 1970s.

The special edition is based on the 370Z Sport, one of four trim levels available on the Porsche 718 Cayman rival for 2020.

Buyers can choose from two retro-inspired liveries (white/red or silver/black), which feature a contrasting bonnet, wing mirrors, bootlid and roofline, alongside two signature racing stripes on each door.

Other bespoke design features include unique 19in lightweight aluminium wheels with red accents, rear spoiler delete and 50th anniversary badging on the front and rear bumpers.

Inside, the 50th Anniversary Edition receives an Alcantara-clad steering wheel with motorsport-inspired centre stripe, 50th Anniversary-embossed kick plates and backrests, and suede door panel inserts.

Dead: Nissan 370Z Roadster

The Nissan 370Z Roadster reportedly died as it lived: briefly reminding us that it was still on sale in the first place.

A Nissan spokesperson reportedly confirmed the end of production of the 370Z Roadster to Motor Authority:

In a statement, Nissan spokesman Kyle Torrens said the brand “will not offer the Roadster variant for the current-generation Z beginning with model year 2020.” The roadster has been a part of the current 370Z’s lineup since 2009 when it debuted for the 2010 model year.

The news comes just after Nissan made a moderately-sized deal about the Z-car family’s 50th anniversary at this year’s New York Auto Show. The Roadster leaves behind the 370Z coupe to carry on the 330 horsepower 3.7-liter V6 way of life, even if barely anybody wants it to.
