Fans build 2017 Nissan Micra on Facebook Live

Nissan says 500 000 Facebook Live viewers assisted in building its 2017 Micra on the social media platform.

The event was a world-first, three-part interactive broadcast direct from the Micra factory in Flins, France. Nissan fans were put in the driving seat and helped to decide the exterior colour, interior trim and other personalisation options of the B-segment hatchback.

125 personalisation options

The three live shows were seen by a total of 500 000 Facebook users from across Europe. Their 15 000 votes and reactions whittled down the Micra’s 125 personalisation options to create their perfect car – an Echo Grey Micra, with Energy Orange exterior pack and Energy Orange interior trim.

TV stars Mike Brewer and Edd China – best known for presenting the popular motoring show Wheeler Dealers – presided over the live broadcasts, engaging with viewers while they cast their votes.

Mike Brewer commented: “On Wheeler Dealers we’re used to bringing used cars back to life – so building a car from scratch on the production line was completely new for us. Constructing a Nissan Micra with the help of Facebook Live and bringing all of its personalisation options to life was a real buzz.”

Edd China added: “I love getting under the skin of any car I’m restoring, and we know that people love a car with bags of personality. To use the latest technology to bring that experience to people from across Europe, and give them the final decision on our Micra’s design, was pretty amazing.”

I have the K13 Micra with a 1.5dCi. Ugly car, excellent engine and fuel economy. It now has 123 000km of which I did around 105 000km, with no problems whatsoever. I really hope they bring the 1.5 diesel engine to South Africa.
 
Sharp new Nissan Micra (finally!) confirmed for SA

Ever since the fifth-generation Nissan Micra was officially revealed at the Paris Motor Show way back in September 2016, South Africans have been wondering when the new B-segment hatch would hit local shores.

And now, finally, Nissan SA has confirmed that the new Micra is scheduled to launch locally in “early 2018”. CARmag.co.za understands that the new model will hit the market either late in the first quarter of next year or early in the second quarter.

Of course, the local arm of the Japanese automaker recently launched a reinvigorated version of its fourth-gen hatchback, which it calls the Micra Active. And, interestingly, this budget derivative – which competes with the likes of the Volkswagen Polo Vivo – will soldier on even after the new (lower, longer and wider) Micra arrives.

Overseas, the latest Micra can be specified with one of three engines: a 52 kW 1,0-litre, three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol unit; a 66 kW 0,9-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol mill (yes, the same unit used in the Clio, courtesy of the Renault-Nissan alliance); and a 66 kW 1,5-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel powerplant. All come paired to a five-speed manual transmission as standard.

Local specifications and engine options have yet to be confirmed.

5 New Hatchbacks to Look Forward to in 2018

We can expect a barrage of new products in the South African new vehicle market in 2018... the popular compact hatchback segment, in particular, will feature a throng of newcomers. Here are 5 new hatchbacks that are worth looking out for...

New Volkswagen Polo

The new Polo is expected to land in South Africa in Q1 in 2018. Its larger footprint will result in a more spacious cabin and its interior packaging will be more attractive than the current iteration with a new dashboard, steering wheel and switchgear enhancing the look of the Polo significantly.

Engines for South Africa have yet to be confirmed but the current range of TSI engines are likely to remain with the possibility of a 1.6-litre turbodiesel engine being introduced. The Polo GTI derivative will be powered by 147 kW / 320 Nm 2.0-litre TSI lifted straight from the Golf GTI. Transmissions will include a 6-speed manual and 7-speed DSG. We will keep you in the loop as more information becomes available.

New Ford Fiesta

The new-look Fiesta is due to arrive locally in Q2 of 2018 and its freshly designed interior with a centre mounted tablet-style infotainment system represents a major improvement over the current Fiesta.

Engines expected in SA includes a 3-cylinder 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine with 92 kW and 170 Nm will be offered in 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic guise, with the automatic offering 74 kW / 170 Nm. A 1.5-litre turbodiesel with 63 kW and 215 Nm of torque with a 6-speed manual transmission is also expected. The range-topping Fiesta ST will now employ a 3-cylinder 1.5-litre turbocharged engine with cylinder deactivation for the first time with 147 kW and 290 Nm of torque powering the front wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission.

New Suzuki Swift

The Swift is one of Suzuki’s best-sellers on the local market and the all-new Swift is headed for our market in Q2 of 2018. It’s lighter and bigger with more interior space and a 7-inch touchscreen is a welcome addition to the cabin.

Engines for the SA market have yet to be confirmed but you can expect the familiar naturally-aspirated 1.2-litre petrol engine with 63 kW and 113 Nm as well as the 1.4-litre petrol engine with 70 kW and 130 Nm of torque offered with either a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission.

The Swift Sport however, will now be powered a turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol (previously turbocharged 1.6-litre) with 103 kW and 230 Nm and mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Weighing some 80 kg less than before, the new Swift Sport should be a ton of fun to drive. We will keep you informed as more details are revealed ahead of launch.

New Nissan Micra

A new, more upmarket Nissan Micra is en-route to Mzansi in Q2 of 2018 and will benefit from attractive exterior styling and a stylish and more modern interior design.

Engines and transmissions for SA have yet to be confirmed but a punchy 3-cylinder, 0.9-litre turbo petrol with 66 kW and 140 Nm is a possibility as well as a naturally-aspirated 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder engine with 52 kW and 95 Nm, but we are definitely hoping the latter makes it to SA. On the diesel front, a 1.5-litre turbodiesel with 66 kW and 220 Nm is also on the cards and a 5-speed manual transmission is likely.

New Volkswagen Polo Vivo

Yes, Volkswagen is preparing to introduce a new Polo Vivo in February 2018 and production has already kicked off at Volkswagen's plant in Uitenhage. The firm, however, remains tight-lipped about the details surrounding the new Polo Vivo. We do know, however, that it will be based on the body of the outgoing Polo and re-packaged to slot in beneath the new Polo which is also expected early in 2018.

We suspect that the new Polo Vivo will feature a turbocharged engine for the first time and the Vivo sedan will likely be discontinued. The new Polo Vivo and new Polo will be launched in close succession in 2018. Exact engine, transmission and specification details have yet to be confirmed, but we will keep you updated as soon as more information becomes available.

Should I buy one?

If the 0.9-litre petrol engine – complete with turbo – is not prohibitively expensive for you to buy or insure, that’s the better bet. It offers the more complete driving experience, alleviating some of frustrations that come with revving the pants off a small naturally aspirated motor for next to no reward.

However, the more powerful Micra’s asking price of £13,915 means it falls into the clutches of the compelling Ibiza and Fiesta - and that can’t be said for this 1.0-litre version. It means that if your driving habits demand little in the way of performance, then this entry-level Micra could be a bargain worth investigating.

Nissan working on all-new India-specific Micra

Overdrive has learnt that Nissan is working on an all-new India-specific Micra.

The new-gen Micra has launched in Europe a few months ago, but the Indian market will be getting a heavily revised iteration of that car.

While the exterior design is expected to be quite similar, the Indian version will have chassis level differences over its European counterpart.

This will be in the form of a more compact footprint and less sophisticated mechanicals and electronics to keep costs down.

The 1.2 petrol and the 1.5 diesel engines are expected to be carried over from the current car - possibly with improvements in refinement.

The interior should also be updated with segment-standard features like a touchscreen infotainment system, auto climate control, LED DRLs and so on.

The Micra will also have to match its rivals in safety features to be competitive in this segment.

In a similar development, Nissan has delayed the launch of the Kicks crossover, initially expected sometime in 2018, to take further advantage of the company's efforts on localisation.

This strategy is similar to what the Renault-Nissan combine has followed before in India.

The Indian market Captur, while being aesthetically very similar to the European Clio-based car, is, in fact, a revised version of the Brazilian-market, Duster-based car. It carries a smaller footprint and is available at a lower price point than its European counterpart.

The upcoming Kicks too is closely related to the Indian market Captur, with only cosmetic changes setting it apart.

The new Micra, when launched, will compete with the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai i20 and the Honda Jazz.

The Kicks, on the other hand, will go up against the Tata Hexa, Renault Captur, Jeep Compass and Hyundai Creta in India.

Nissan SA confirms local launch timing for new Micra

Nissan South Africa has finally revealed that the fifth-generation Micra, which was revealed at the Paris Motor Show way back in September 2016, is scheduled to launch on local shores in June 2018.

The local arm of the Japanese brand furthermore confirmed that the SA-spec version would be offered with a 66 kW turbocharged, three-cylinder petrol engine (yes, the one used in the Renault Clio, courtesy of the Renault-Nissan alliance), likely linked to a five-speed manual.

Since the local arm hasn’t mentioned the naturally aspirated 52 kW 1,0-litre, three-cylinder petrol unit and 66 kW 1,5-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel powerplant offered in some overseas markets, we’re guessing they won’t be part of the local range (at launch, at least).

Nissan SA promises that it will offer the new Micra with “an impressive specification list” that includes items such as “a modern infotainment system” (with Apple CarPlay) as well as comprehensive safety features in the form of six airbags and ABS with EBD.

The fifth-generation Micra will furthermore be sold with a six-year/150 000 km warranty and a three-year/90 000 km service plan.
