VW’s Polo will soon face these new rivals in SA
Volkswagen’s new-generation Polo has been selling up a storm since its introduction in January and not without reason as it is widely regarded as the benchmark setter in the B hatchback segment.
But things are set to get a little harder for the VeeDub in the coming month, with two formidable new rivals due for launch.
First of these to arrive will be the new Ford Fiesta, which is being launched in the country next week, while those wanting to get their hands on the funky new Nissan Micra will have to wait a little longer - with Nissan SA having just confirmed that the completely reimagined hatch is due for local release in June.
Let’s take a closer look at the two newcomers:
Ford Fiesta
Set to reach showrooms in mid-May, the seventh-generation Fiesta might have an evolutionary design, but technologically it’s been brought bang up to date and beyond - with Ford boldly describing it as the most advanced small car in the world.
We’ll only know the local pricing and range details at launch, but it’s a given that the mainstay engine will be Ford’s 1-litre turbopetrol triple, which is offered abroad in various output variants ranging from 74kW to 103kW. Ford will also offer a 1.5-litre turbodiesel option.
The cabin gets some much-needed modernisation, with smarter materials and a 20cm touch-screen mounted at the top of the redesigned dashboard. It’s offered with Ford’s latest Sync3 infotainment system along with other gadgets like Pedestrian Detection, Auto High Beam, Cross Traffic Alert and Adaptive Cruise Control. The local spec mix, as mentioned, has yet to be confirmed however.
Overseas models are also offered with more distinctive trim grades than before, including a crossover variant called the Active and a sporty-looking ST-Line (not to be confused with the actual ST).
On that note, the new Fiesta ST, powered by a 147kW, 1.5-litre three-cylinder motor, is set to follow at a later stage.
Nissan Micra
A far more radical departure from its predecessor is the all-new Nissan Micra, which is not only significantly bigger but also a lot more radical looking.
Based on alliance partner Renault’s Clio, and built alongside it's equally sexy cousin in France, the Micra will be positioned at the upper end of the B segment when it arrives next month, while the recently re-launched Micra Active that’s based on the Indian-built previous generation, will still soldier on at the lower end of the compact hatch market - think of it as Nissan’s Vivo.
Nissan has confirmed that local models will be powered by a 66kW 1-litre three-cylinder turbopetrol - as per the Clio - but no word on pricing or specifications as yet - except that it will be sold with a three-year/90 000km service plan.
Local models will also offer a modern touchscreen infotainment system and six airbags will be standard.

HERE’S HOW MUCH THE NEW NISSAN MICRA WILL COST IN SA
The new, fifth-generation Nissan Micra is scheduled to arrive in South Africa in the middle of June 2018, but we’ve managed to unearth local pricing a little ahead of the launch.
The local Micra range – which will be positioned above a reinvigorated version of the fourth-gen hatchback, called the Micra Active – will comprise three derivatives (Visia, Acenta and Acenta Plus), starting at R233 500, and compete against the likes of the Volkswagen Polo, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai i20 and Toyota Yaris, as well as the Renault Clio with which it shares its underpinnings.
All will be powered by a 66 kW/140 N.m turbocharged, three-cylinder petrol engine (yes, the one used in the Clio, courtesy of the Renault-Nissan alliance), linked to a five-speed manual as standard. Nissan says this powertrain is good for a 12,1-second sprint to three figures and a combined fuel consumption of 5,1 L/100 km.
The Visia specification level includes 15-inch steel wheels, a multifunction steering wheel, a basic two-speaker audio system, cruise control, automatic headlamps, hill-start assist and an auto stop-start system.
Acenta adds 16-inch alloys, snazzier cloth upholstery, front foglamps, a seven-inch infotainment display (linked to four speakers and featuring Apple CarPlay functionality) and a five-inch colour driver display.
The flagship Acenta Plus model furthermore features 17-inch alloys, orange interior trim (pictured below, in conjunction with selected exterior paint colours) and leather trim for the steering wheel and gearshift lever.
The new Micra will be sold with a six-year/150 000 km warranty and a three-year/90 000 km service plan.

Indeed, without even knowing the full spec of the Acenta Plus I can bet that the Clio Gt-line will still be better value for money, slightly cheaper and more power. The Ranault part of the alliance makes all the sense in the world these days.
I got to drive both the new Micra and Fiesta as rental cars in the UK and France last month and was really impressed!
Both really kitted out though and was definitely top spec.
Rent a car in that category here and you get a base model Polo trendline.

Just wondering, with most manufacturers coming up with better and powerful 1.0T engines, Ford, VW and Opel, how long is the alliance going to soldier on with that 0.9l engine if Nissan is only now putting it in it's New Micra? Surely it's getting a little long in the tooth now?

The Renault/Nissan 0.9L T is a decent enough motor still. Efficiency over power. Arguably the best sub-1.2 motor is the 1.2L T from the PSA Group. Then the Fiesta 1L T then the VW 1L T etc.

Engine power
The new Micra is powered by a 0.9-litre, 3-cylinder turbopetrol engine (sourced from the Japanese company's alliance partner Renault) with peak outputs of 66 kW and 140 Nm of torque. The powerplant is mated with a 5-speed manual transmission and combined average fuel consumption is claimed at 5.1 L/100 km.
Key design features
There are three trim levels for the new Nissan Micra: Visia, Acenta and Acenta+
From a styling perspective, the new Micra is a massive improvement over the previous generation with sharper, curvy lines giving it a more modern and youthful appearance. The front-end features Nissan's V-motion grille in chrome and gloss black, which is complemented with boomerang LED daytime running lights. A blacked out C-pillar gives the Micra a floating-roof effect with hidden rear door handles; a roof spoiler and new boomerang taillights round off the Micra's design. The new Micra will be offered with 3 trim levels to choose from including Visia, Acenta and the top-spec Acenta Plus, which comes fitted with two-tone, 17-inch alloy wheels. The base-spec Visia derivative rides on 15-inch steel wheels while the mid-spec Acenta wears 16-inch alloys.
On the inside, the Micra features a thoroughly improved interior. A T-shaped "gliding wing" dashboard design with chrome and gloss black details gives the Micra's cabin a more premium look and feel. The Micra Visia comes with casual black upholstery, while the Acenta derivative benefits from black and grey upholstery. The top-spec Micra Acenta-Plus features the vibrant Energy Orange upholstery.
A multifunction D-shaped steering wheel is fitted and the gear lever is surrounded by soft-touch knee pads. A 7-inch colour floating touchscreen display with navigation and Apple CarPlay is offered on the Acenta and top-spec Micra Acenta Plus, while the entry-level Visia derivative gets a more rudimentary audio system with Bluetooth, MP3, USB and iPod connectivity. Cruise control is standard across the new Micra range. The luggage bay of the new Micra is sizable at 300 litres.
