The Nvidia GTX 680 Thread

I don't even know why I care it's not like I'll be able to afford one anytime soon. I think there's probably a bit of Nvidia fanboy in me from the 8800 days hoping they'd make another big leap forwards.

Lol, same here. Just splashed out on the 7970, have no money for PC stuff, and yet I've barely been able to concentrate on work today. Clearly we have CUD issues (but at least not bad enough to actually buy stuff all the time). And the 8800, dam that card was awesome... with its whopping 384mb RAM (the cheap version that I got) it played Crysis pretty darn well imo

lol, would me a nice uprade for me also, been waiting weeks for this darn gk104 , my 512 8800gt aint got the steam anymore

Anandtech is live!!!!
Retaking the performance crown.

Something about BF3....

Looks like 28nm OC benefits have transferred to Nvidia as well, Guru3D has the card pulling 1250mhz

edit: Techpowerup got basically the same level of overclock, but they showed that Nvidia bumps up the voltage to suit. You're looking at 0.1V extra for 1250mhz

Seems like there's definitely a bandwidth issue going on here. 7970 absolutely devours it in Crysis Warhead. OC'd it chews up a 6990 in 3dmark11 :o

That was always to be expected given the narrower memory bandwidth, and lower amount of RAM. But I'd hazard only a select few people are running 2500x1600 or triple monitors, so to your average Joe gaming at 1080p the GTX680 is a clear winner. So far its got a 10% lead on the HD7970 at 1080p, need to integrate data from 2 more sites...

Just got home and saw the reviews :D. If anyone is going to buy this GTX 680 please post here.

Time to wait for AMD 7990 to hit back.

You'll just have to wait a bit longer for the GK 110 based cards :D

Ok, GTX680 is 7.5% faster at 1080p, one more sites data to grab. I doubt this ratio will change much, so AMD definitely need to drop prices to at least $500, but more likely, somewhere around $450-475. Since their chip is a bit larger, that might be a tough ask. The same obviously applies to the rest of the HD7xxx series, drop prices or risk being obsolete (from a value perspective)

edit: although a stock 1000mhz+ HD7970 (priced around $500) is also a likely scenario, since basically all of them can do 1050mhz (a 13% overclock) without any voltage tweaks. Interesting times indeed

As expected, it's not that much faster but what is unexpected is that it's priced around the $500 mark. Expect AMD to respond with price cuts soon, which is exactly what I was hoping for :)

Hmmm, techpowerup is such a good read :D
Looks like thermals are going to be very important if you decide to get a GTX6xx, as the dynamic boost can vary from 1111mhz, down to 1058mhz depending on temps. For the maximum benefit you'll want to be running below 70°C. This will be particularly important for those people that like to run 24/7 overclocks that are higher than most.

And a note to hardcore overclockers with water/LN2 - there is a hard limit on the max voltage (1.175V) and clocks (549mhz boost) GTX6xx will allow. These get enforced on a driver level, so bypassing it will be a royal pain in the backside. If I understand it correctly, even flashing a modified bios will not do the trick. Luckily, most gamers wont be phased about this :)

LOL, but not buying straight away. These first batch of arrivals are usually overpriced. And then a bit later the 110 chips..... choices, choices....

7.5%? I'd question that to be honest... I'm looking at Hexus and the average seems to be 10-20% in 2560, with a few exceptions such as AvP which is a bit of an oddity relative to the others - and the editors even questioned if it was a driver fault. And 2560 is closer gap than 1920 due to bandwidth issues. Anand also gave it a 5-20% margin sweep at 1920 which averages out around 12%. I'd need to look a bit deeper and I don't have time for that right now but 7.5 seems low.

Metro2033 is one game where 7970 shows strongly but even then it's behind by 5-7%.

Hexus's final aggregated score is 427.4 vs 362.5@1920 - a 15.18% difference. And 11% @ 2560.

Hothardware says:
Generally speaking, the GeForce GTX 680 was between approximately 5% and 25% faster than AMD’s Radeon HD 7970, depending on the application.

I'm just pluggin in numbers from proper review sites. Let me outline why you cant form a proper opinion if you only look at those two sites

1) Not enough games tested (only 6)
2) Pro Nvidia games make up 33% of each sites review, skews the results nicely
3) In Metro2033 the 7970 loses according to HotHardware, why then does almost every other site show the 7970 winning?

I stand by my current 7.5% better fps of the GTX680 over the HD7970 at 1080p, with one sites data left to integrate.

Hexus, Anand and Hothardware aren't 'proper' sites? Whatever you say... Believe it or not it's just a random assortment I clicked on and you really have no basis to say it's 'nicely skewed' towards Nvidia games.

Metro performance flip flops depending on which sites I've seen. Sometimes I've seen it ahead other times behind. That, AvP and Crysis Warhead are the games where the 7970 appears to perform the best in general. Otherwise the numbers look even worse.

Ok.. I question it.

Anand is proper (its actually one of the sites I use for the charts), Hexus and Hot Hardware are not, clearly evident by the games they choose to use. I'm guessing since you doubt the 7.5% Techpowerup's results are incorrect?

And I didnt say you were skewed to Nvidia, I said the games those two sites used were skewed.
