With incandescent lightbulbs set to become increasingly difficult to find have you given any thought to alternative heat sources?

Why make it difficult. I use a normal CFL ligtbulb with no issues. Still generates enough heat while not cooking the meat.

Where do you live? I'm about 100m from the sea and I dont think any of my CFLs are going to cut it in winter.

What wattage bulb are you using currently? Have you tried touching a CFL "bulb" with your hand recently..?

Today as a matter of fact. Only a 15w though.

And was it pleasant..? I have a reptile heating pad I use for sprouting my various chilli/pepper seeds and I'm not convinced it's all that much hottest than a low wattage light bulb if at all.

I saw halogen bulbs at Checkers that fits a standard socket. Can't remember exactly but they were around 70 W.

That's the 77w I'm currently using

They also do a smaller tapered bulb that I bought - I think it's around 30w - but I seem to have misplaced it.

It's warm, but the biltong box is running about 4° cooler with it as compared to the standard 40w incandescent. Luckily I happened across a few of those while foraging.

The whole idea of the lamp is not for heating, but just to raise the temperature above ambient. What you are trying to do is prevent condensation, so you just want to lift the temp in the enclosure above dew point. In winter you just have to wait a bit longer

I'm trying to keep the humidity at bay - not something you need to worry about there, is it?
