The Official Biltong Enthusiasts Thread

Most butcheries sell those S hooks. Paper clips also work.

Also the melware biltong maker fans do tend to die. Mine did after only 4 batches of biltong. Replaced it with a new one and that is working fine now. Cost me about R150 for a decent new fan but had to source it from an electronics place as most places do not stock 220V AC fans, just the DC PC fans.

I bought some meat and sausage to hang but seem to have lost my plastic s-shaped hooks. Any ideas as to where I can get in Cape Town CBD?

I bought 250 stainless steel hooks at Farm City a few years ago, very expensive though but I reuse them as I have been hanging/making my own biltong for years and I go hunting 1-3 times a year.

I get mine from my local butcher - he just gives them to me.

I got mine for free at Food Lovers. Lady at biltong section just handed them over when I asked them if they sell it.

Didn't end up using them tho as my DIY dryer is quite low and the hooks are relatively long.

Using paper clips.

You must have been very charming. I just asked at Food Lovers St George's Mall and Pick n Pay Rondebosch and neither would sell me their hooks, let alone give them away for free.

I got cable ties as a temporary measure :(

So my first batch in quite a while is in. 3 strips of beef, 3 of ostrich and some ostrich sausage.

Should I leave the light on the whole time or unplug it tomorrow morning? I'm in Cape Town...
