The Official Biltong Enthusiasts Thread

I did - big time, now not so much.

What I do as a must to prevent any flies flying around or targeting my biltong is I place an upright fan closer to the biltong dryer this blows away any flies trying to invade they don't and cant handle the turbo fan

gents my fan broke, just stopped spinning

which fan can i use?

and how simple is it to change

links please

Most guys just use a 5v Pc fan when their fans break. Can't be too difficult to connect.

I just ran into the same issue with my Biltong King fan, I purchased a 12V pc fan too, my question is this, does it still work the same? I mean does the 12V fan move as much air as the 220V that came with it?

anybody know where one can buy Halaal silver/top side C-grade.

currently my butcher i normally go to, selling A-Grade hind quarter for about R78 / kg after trimming.
I usually buy hind quarter because i get the other cuts as well for cheaper... especially the fillet.
But this means topside gets exchanged for soutvleis... which leaves silver side only for one batch of biltong..

And with all that meat... we only buy hind quarter only twice a year maybe.

SO i heard C-Grade good enough for biltong. And supposed to be cheaper as well...
So if i can find a supply that sells silver/top side for biltong... then i can satisfy my craving to biltong more often :-)

Places that do sell C Grade silverside don't sell it for less than your price listed. Also because its sought after for biltong the price isn't really lower at all. Then finding someone that sells it is the biggest issue. There are very few places that do.

hi everyone.is this thread still active.i just joined the forum after reading all 88pages of this thread and decided that i will no longer buy biltong as i have been for years.so i will be shopping for a biltong maker month end.i know many people frown upon it but i have to limit red meat intake due to me having hypertension.so im hoping to balance it with chicken biltong.has anyone tried it and got it right.many shops sell them and i havent gotten sick from it.but i cant seem to find a recipe online that i can try.any tips would be appreciated.

Good luck finding cheap silverside...

I received a biltong maker for Xmas but have so far only used it 3 times. Every time my local Spar has biltong meat (normally silverside) on special. But most of the time my Spar and all other supermarkets and butcheries that I am aware of are selling their silverside meat at a cost that does not make any sense in doing it yourself.

Normal price for silverside at my Spar and elsewhere is anything from R110 a kg to R130 a kilo. Pretty much the same as steak. WTF. That would be R220-R260 a kilo should you make biltong (assuming 50% shrinkage). For that price you can get great biltong in the shops...

It's almost like the supermarkets and butcheries are keeping silverside for themselves and making their own biltong...

Have you tried a butcher?

That said the idea of making biltong is only partly cost wise
