The Official ebook Reader Thread

Yep that's why it's superior. I have a huge collection of ministry-related books that I like to have at my fingertips as reference for eg.

I wouldn't say an ebook reader is ergonomically so much superior to paper. You cant just flick through for one thing. But all in all it's a better solution.

Yeah but you can bookmark pages, highlight and annotate etc and then jump straight to those. A lot of the ergonomics I was talking about were things like when you're lying in bed on your side and then you turn a page - with a normal book you have to roll over, with an ebook you don't. Or with an ebook you could have it on the table while you're eating and not have to hold it open, just reach across and push a button to turn the page every now and then. Or if I don't have my glasses with me I can just make the font size bigger etc.

Thanks for all the advice earlier.
Got a chance to play with the Sony Touch, Kindle 2 and Cybook Opus when I was overseas recently. While the Sony did have some nice features (graffiti note taking), the Kindle won hands down.

Ordered my Kindle3 (3G) on the 24th and it arrived in Joburg this morning, can't wait for delivery! :D

All true :D
Plus I LOVE the pearl display on the kindle3. It looks much more like actual paper. The old Kindles looked like an old lcd monochrome watch screen to me.

Almost everyone who's seen my kindle is going to be ordering one for themselves:). Can I ask Amazon for a free gift?

Several weeks later and I still believe the Kindle 3 was a great investment, I still can't get over how much smaller and lighter it is and not having 3G anymore has actually been a blessing because I no longer waste time looking at the books on sale on the Kindle store (and I have enough to keep me busy for some years to come anyway). Considering the excellent price it's hard not to recommend this device to anyone who considers themselves a fiction reader.

+10000 great little gadget - now just to find more reading time...

I have noticed two small diagonal hairline cracks in the plastic casing of my Kindle 3, bottom corners of the screen. Did a search online, and seems to affect a number of people.

Seems Amazon is quick to send a replacement. Not sure what the deal would be for us though (what with shipping and import duties etc). Warranty for mine expires on the 18/11/2011, so I've diarised the 5th of September, and will call customer service then. Don't think it's urgent, and will keep an eye on it (the cracks). Just FYI for any other Kindle 3 owners. Customer service number is 1-206-266-0927. You can call for free through Gmail.

Hi just to let you know, Amazon will replace your Kindle at no cost to you. You send them the broken one and they send one back, they will refund the shipping you paid to send it back.

I've sent 2 back, one because the K3 came out a week after I bought a K2 and another time because mine was freezing and rebooting and something was loose on the inside.

Amazon's customer service is the best in the world! Wish all companies everywhere would be like them. :)

I have a IRiver. When it started freezing I ended up contacting SA agents who had me go to sales point and swap the faulty one for a new one. Great service!!!

My wife has recently got into meditation and now yoga and thanks to you guys she has got some tranquil music to listen to whilst meditating but now she is interested in e-books and eReaders. From what I have read here you either get a specific device to use when you have an e-book but you can also use a phone or mp4 which has that capability. Is this correct? I remember downloading and reformatting books on my phone to read and I assume this is the same principal.

Blio eReader released! Free for the PC.

Blio is a FREE eReading application that presents eBooks just like the printed version, in full color, and with all of the features you’d want from an eReader. So welcome to what eReading should be…welcome to Blio.

Blio is smart. Smart enough to know that books are more than just words; there’s style, presentation, and a world of color. Blio is also intelligent enough to know all of that enhances your reading experience. That’s what you love about books. So, books in Blio have the same layout, fonts, and full-color images that you enjoy in the print version of your favorite titles.

But eBooks are intended to be different…that’s why they put that little “e” in front of “book”. eBooks should do more - they should leverage everything that the machine you’re reading on is capable of. Blio does just that. Now your books can read aloud to you, with Blio highlighting each word as it goes, so you can follow along. You can look up words you might not be familiar with or get more information on a topic by searching Google, Bing, and more without ever leaving your book.

Then there are those people who like to write in the margins…you know who you are. Well, Blio’s got you covered there too. You can highlight, take notes, add pictures, and even web links to the notes section of each book.

Blio wants to make reading enjoyable and easy, no matter where you are, and no matter what device you’re reading on. To that end, Blio offers ReadLogic, a feature that knows to automatically zoom and navigate to the next logical place in the book for you to read, whether it’s the next paragraph, a caption, or a sidebar. Blio also offers the Blio BookVault, a virtual library that you can access from anywhere. The Blio BookVault lets you start a book on one device, and continue it from another, while saving your reading progress.

So with all that Blio does for you, think about all that you can do with Blio. Finally, there’s an eReader that brings cookbooks, travel guides, how-to manuals, textbooks, and children’s books, vividly to life. Up until now, these types of content have been nothing more than pictureless, black and white pages on other eReaders. With Blio it comes to full-color life right before your eyes.

Blio installed on my pc but does not work. I open it and it disappears in seconds.

Did you get to create an account?

I got it to work... but it is not as user intuitive as I thought it would be.
And I can't figure out how to import my own books.

won't even open. It downloaded ok and when I wanted to open the program it would not.

Hmmm, weird.
Anyway, having installed it and used it, I would say this software still has some way to go before it is properly usable. This is the first release, but it is not yet very refined.

I still think Mobipocket MobiReader is the best and most versatile e-book reader for the PC (and Nokia Phones).
