It takes 30 to 35 minutes to drive from PTA East to Midrand. Using the Gautrain train and buses would take at least double that amount of time.
Until there is a decent bus feeder route system (all suburbs covered) for people living 5 to 15km from stations I don't see the Gautrain system being a long term success.

Problem is the petrol price and soon to be activated toll gates. Projected work travel costs for the month (4 weeks) would be around R2400 compared to the around R1750 for Gautrain+bus.

The train is a good option for a single person who commutes alone. For 2 people or more people, sharing a car, even with tolling and fuel increases, should still be cheaper.

Thats why I will only start using it when my colleague leaves and doesn't contribute to fuel anymore...
 
Something which caught my attention was the following indemnity notice which was displayed on a poster in the train:

The Gauteng Provincial Government, Bombela Concession Company, Bombela Operating Company and their shareholders, directors, officers, employees, sub-contractors or agents or affiliates in whole or in part, shall not be liable in any way whatsoever for any loss, injury or damage (including but not limited to consequential or special damages or loss of profits) of whatsoever nature, and whether or not caused by the negligence (gross or otherwise) of the Gauteng Provincial Government, Bombela Concession Company, Bombela Operating Company and their shareholders, directors, officers, employees, sub-contractors or agents arising out of, incidental to, or in connection in any way with the use or access to the Gautrain System or the conveyance or failure to convey by the Gauteng Provincial Government, Bombela Concession Company or Bombela Operating Company of any passenger or person, the property of any person and the Gauteng Provincial Government, Bombela Concession Company, Bombela Operating Company and their shareholders, directors, officers, employees, sub-contractors or agents are hereby released from any duty of care towards such passenger or person.

I want to try the long-haul Gautrain out next time I'm in Joburg and need to go to Pretoria. It's a lot cheaper than some were saying last time I was there.

Wish he had a Gautrain or a "Capetrain" here - having said that, Cape Town isn't situated next to another massive city, like JHB - PTA, so it's pointless I guess.

Our BRT works well though.
 
Used it today to travel to Pretoria (Hatfield) from Rhodesfield station. Loved the ride - would definitely consider it to use instead of driving to meetings and forking out R30 for parking + time, petrol and wear on tear. Only downside is that the car would definitely be quicker using the R21

Just the day I want to test it out, they havent even worked a full week with passengers and now they want to strike? I've already paid my money to use it tomrrow, I wont have another time/reason to use it.

Gautrain bus drivers are scum of the earth.
 
Just went from Rosebank to Hatfield. Very pleasant experience and was very fast, took about 20 min.

If you commute using the train your life will be a lot easier than driving.

Everyone is always comparing just the costs of commuting.

I seriously think the whole peace-of-mind thing is underrated. Riding the train you just sit and you have 30min to do whatever you like (read/music/work) which is much better than stressing sitting in traffic.

Absolutely true. However, when there's 2 family-members in the house who commute to Jhb, then the financial factors outweigh the peace-of-mind :D

I'd be a bit stressed about not being able to get to work using the Gautrain : Gautrain bus drivers go on strike

Took me 25 minutes to get from PTA to Midrand on the N1 this morning.
Quicker and by the looks of it more reliable than the Gautrain. :D

Yeah, highway was very quite this morning ,took me 25min to work as well. Still wish I could have tested out the gautrain...
 
I've just heard that apparently the train drivers have joined the bus drivers strike now. Anybody know anything?

Apparently the trains are still running.

Another supporting argument for implement metro-buses instead of a train: buses don't require power-lines. B(
