The Official NVidia Shield Thread

Confused about the use case for this unit - why this over smart tv or other android boxes? Pretty big price diff so obv there's something I'm not seeing but you guys are?
Much better performance. More stable in my experience. Also a big name in graphics vs some generic Chinese chipset.

I have a growing library of 4k blu-ray remuxes. Some in hdr10, dolby vision, Dolby TrueHD and DTX. My TV can't handle the codecs and my first android box would stutter, not pass through dolby atmos and not support dolby vision. The 2019 shield pro has ticked all the boxes.

Uhh.... Netflix 4K? Amazon 4K?
Other boxes don't license the decoder tech and can therefore only display Netflix/etc in SD. Even if you buy the Beelink GS-King X at $270, you will still only get netflix in SD. That's pretty crap if you ask me.

Emulation. No more to explain there... great box if you wanna do that.

Sheer Speed, GUI and experience, and maybe cause it will get support for 5+ years? Old nVidia shields are still getting updates to this day....and good updates, not the ones that make the system slow that try to get you to upgrade.

If you buy some chinese knockoff player, the software support goes out the window the minute it leaves the factory.

Apparently it's also the only device that can handle a 4K stream with 0 framedrops, according to some popular youtuber that tests all these players.

What about super accurate voice search, or nvidia's 4K AI Upscaling? Their remote is amazing with it's CEC, it just works - switches on the TV and Receiver when you switch on the Shield. it can even beep if you lose the remote, and it has a gyro/motion sensor in it, so when you move it the buttons light up.

Now, maybe you can get a Amazon Firestick or something that DOES do Netflix 1080p or 4K... okay, cool... but now you're stuck with a dead end OS that sucks, with either only a 100mb LAN port, or even none - that means no SteamLink to play games on!

Lastly, what I personally like best is the onboard x265 HEVC Decoder Chip.

Comparison Chart:

Basically, if you want the best, there is nothing better. Sure it's $200, but damn it's worth it, will last for many years.

For the receiver only? I only see cec options not for tv and receiver separately
Hmm...could have sworn I saw that option but I can't find it now..
(It may have been there when i was using TOSEC...now I'm using ARC/CEC)

Maybe check your TV settings to NOT turn on your receiver when the TV powers on.

In my experience it's the only TV box (in the regular consumer space) that is suitable for home theatre enthusiasts. It basically supports every audio and video codec that you'll need and has enough horsepower to never really get bogged down.

Yeah the MIs and LITs and stuff are great for dipping your toes into streaming media... but once you want to get serious, it's time to upgrade.

When I get a 4K monitor/TV I will seriously consider getting a nVidia Shield, till then my Mi-Box and LIT box are doing great. But then they are both operating well within their limits.

Is it only mine that seems to be super glued together so there's no way in hell that happens?

Edit:
Fixed - throw it on the floor works good

Can't wait to see your unboxing videos.

Ordered one from Amazon about a week ago.. can't wait to test it out compared to the mibox and LIT box already have.

Save yourself the hassle - it's got batteries in it. That remote ain't friendly to open the 1st time but once cracked seems ok.

I ordered the 2019 remote for my 2017 Shield from Amazon yesterday, should be here Monday, I hope to not have to throw it on the floor :giggle:

What are the prices like compared to buying locally, when you buy from Amazon?

Can be cheaper but you have to factor in the risk of not having local support. With a thing like a remote though, it's unlikely you're going to need support unless it's broken out of the box.

The cheapest I can see a Shield remote for in SA is about 250 bucks more than importing (I assume the guys selling it are also importing it themselves).

As far as I can ascertain, there is no "official " agent for A Shield here. But there are places selling them. So no support anyhow.

So just wondering - for when I am ready to make a move for one.

Amazon.com is having a 15% up to 20USD items shipping to South Africa discount came out the R3800 or so ... compared to the Gee Wizz.. for 6485? ... even without the discount the amazon order is R4200 or so.
