The Official RaspberryPi Thread

FWIW, I got myself a Trendnet TEW-648UBM usb wifi adapter (from IC), no external powered usb hub required. Installed Raspbmc, and controlling it via my Galaxy SII, with all my data sitting on a HP Microserver which I access via SMB. All working well.

RS are hopeless! Mine was supposed to ship 3 weeks ago.

Going to the RS UK website - complaints...."File does not exist"
Contact us section..."Online Support

If you have any queries regarding registering or using our website, then our team are here to help on 01536 444025"

How is that online support??!!!

How do you contact these fekkers!

All existing orders will be despatched on or before 18th December

BS! :mad::(

Hi guys, I just set up my Pi, but it doesn't pick up my external HDD. I've tried with RaspBMC, and openELEC. the drive works fine under Windows. I've tried with the on-board USB, as well as with a powered hub. A flash drive works fine, but I need the HDD so I can watch my HD content.

Anyone knows how to solve this issue?

Hi guys i orderd a Pi from RS.This is my first time ordering something from online.
I clicked on the "business" tab and bought one with my standard bank debit card. But i did not register,i just did it as a temporary costumer.

So my Q's is, they sent me an email with my order ref number but it doesnt seem that they took money from my account yet??

Please help.

I didn't get any help on the "Noshing on Raspberry Pi" thread. Maybe you guys can help me choose.

So, this is how it looks comparing the offers :

eexpress.co.za:

RASPBERRY PI, MODEL B, 512MB - 1168 available - lead time : +- 3 to 4 working days R 481.85
MULTICOMP ENCLOSURE, RASPBERRY PI, BLACK - 332 available - Lead time : +-2 weeks R 91.89

za.rs-online.com (personal use selected):

Goods total US$41.47
Tax US$8.29
Standard Delivery (Despatch expected within 1 week(s)) US$8.02

za.rs-online.com (Business use selected):

Raspberry Pi Type B 756-8308 (Temporarily out of stock) - R 299.99

So, correct me if I'm wrong... eexpress has stock and they deliver quickly, but are a little but more expensive. Ordering from rs-online depends on whether is personal or business use(I still don't know the difference) and while its cheaper, it will take a while till its shipped ?

Just tell me where to buy it from.

Pain free EEXpress - my summation from all posts from all threads I have read.

RS business - Cheap, you might have to wait for them to get stock. [Their projected date is *** or you may get lucky]. For the Rpi you WON'T get same day (lmfao) despatch so delivery might be R29-R39. (7 weeks from late November)

RS Personal - ignore the US Tax, you may get taxed when it comes into SA. You may pay anything from R0-R250 to customs. It is no longer couriered via the leechers DHL, it is shipped via airmail with no tracking number. (3 weeks from May 19th by courier, but others report June orders nor being delivered and no customer service)

If you are happy to just place your order for a good deal, and have it turn up someday ... RS Business. If you have your heart set on getting one, EEXpress. Although I do no speak from personal experience with them.

What do you see in your syslog when you plug the drive in?

Can you see the drive appear under /dev?
Did you try mounting it?

In OpenElec does it show up under add sources for video, and your filesystem thingy?

What files system is on your disk, can you try switching it to ext2, or ext4?

My personal opinion is if I am only buying one then I'm happy to fork out and extra R100 to not have to wait 3 months I'll save by not pulling my hair out waiting. If you have many to buy, then use the cheapest one and sit back and relax - forget about the pi's until your are surprised by the delivery notification from the ppost office.

My first PI took three months to get to me from RS, UK. Very frustrating wait. Three months later another 3 PI's and waited 3 months - Very frustrating wait. Scoured BidOrBuy and gumtree and scored 3 in Durban. Yay! Ordered 10 via RS, 3 months wait. - At least I had other PI's to play with. Now the real fun begins.

Moral of the story, if you want to play now - pay more, and write that extra cash off - I think of it as paying for 2-3 burgers ... after I while you forget about spending the money. Or trawl the online classifieds. I think there was a guy in Cape Town gumtree selling one a few weeks ago.

Help with what? They will probably only bill your account once the Pi is ready to be shipped or something. If you are unsure about what is going on why don't you just give them a call?

Got my HDD to pick up now, the USB hub was the culprit

Just a word of advice to the new Pi owners, if you playing mkv's with DTS audio, you gonna have a bad time!

Didn't come across this in my research! Thanks, will try it this evening :)

Edit: After reading that post, I think I am going to have the same issue, with the tv not being able to decode DTS (I also have a Sony). Any idea where to get one of those HDMI splitters?

Nope. :)
