The official running thread™

My partner does not do the gel thing. She prefers real food, or she eats far/fast bars.
I sometimes wonder about this. How did marathoners manage before gels became a thing.
They also all contain more or less the same base ingredients.

Sodium
Potassium
Magnesium
Calcium
Caffeine

Some have sugars like fructose and maltodextrin.

Managed to run the longest I've ever run over the weekend (14km).

Also, first time I'd try a gel. Jury's still out whether its worth it but I felt OK towards the end. The humidity in Durbs this year is on another level making these longer runs feel really daunting.
Your heart rate is quite high for such a slowish pace?

You're still in your 20's?

If anyone thinks that's a high price. I saw these plastic things at Mr Price Sport this weekend...

Good luck. Will take some hard work. If you can run a sub 20 minute park run at that weight (even accounting for some serious weight loss in the next 12 months), that will be seriously impressive. Go get it done!

Good goal to aim for. Sub 20 is the gold standard. Major component is how much weight you can knock off in 6 months through diet not exercise.

Remember train for distance first and then speed. Good luck!

I don't want to be discouraging, but it's really tough to finish a 5K in under 20 minutes. It's not impossible, but it's going to take a lot of effort.

Going that pace "thought I'd die" is a recipe for disaster. The slower the go, the better you feel and the longer you run for.
Yes, when getting started, I'd say start slow and after a few weeks or months push yourself occasionally with a speed run, some intervals, fartlek, hills, etc.
