The official running thread™

58km is quite good.
Whats is your long distance like once per week?
GSW is still ramping up my long run times after recovery from the ear thing. Mostly around 12 - 15km if I stick to the suggested times. Next Saturday it looks like the time could allow for 16+(a bit)km.

Base runs during the week are also now around 7-10 km on average.

Garmin suggested workouts is weird and it's weekly routine is not properly structured imo.

Someone asked me to create a structured plan they could follow to break the 24minute barrier they were facing. He did quite well at the age of 62 and after 8 weeks managed to PB and improve his time by little over one minute. He now runs a sub 23minute 5km.

I should maybe create a few static plans and post them here.

@mods please kick this guy out the thread, this is the running thread not the I'm a cheetah thread
You sound like the young chaps at the local park run.
Being a fast(ish) runner seems to draw alot of hate from others.
I guess they fear when they see me comming.

GSW has been working pretty well for me so far. I've seen HUGE improvement since I've started using it in April. Of course I don't think it will be as good as a structured plan by someone who knows what they are doing, but for what it is it seems good enough. It can go a bit overboard based on bad sleep and change things dramatically.

I would definitely be interested in seeing your static plans.

I will work on something this week and post it here :)

Wish me luck boys. Last year I did a 2:20 (was my first ever HM o_O ) so hoping I can get there now that I have a few more under my belt and the garmin coach on my arm.

Taking the wife shopping today. Wife wants a robot vaccuum... I want new carbon racers for the peninsula hm in Feb. Seems like today's going to be an expensive outing.

I hit the track this afternoon for some 800m intervals to mentally process the financial havoc my wife wrecked on my bank accoount but it quickly turned into a scene straight out of a comedy sketch. Most of the lanes were hijacked by a coach running 100m and 200m sprints with athletes who apparently had rocket fuel in their veins. So, being the genius I am, I decided to strategically pace myself with each lap so that every time I hit the start line, I would be a few meters behind a group of sprinters gearing up for their 100m blast off.
And then because I clearly have no self preservation instincts Id join them for a 100m sprint right in the middle of my 800m interval. You know.....for fun.
If you’re wondering how that felt, let me summarize: like trying to run while being punched in the chest by a MMA fighter wearing spiked boxing gloves. My heart rate shot up to levels only seen on malfunctioning HR monitors, and I was pretty sure I was about to black out.
But the cherry on top? I got absolutely smoked....no, obliterated! by a 17 year old girl who sprinted past me like she was late for the apocalypse and a guy who looks like he is Gout Gout’s long lost twin brother. I didn’t just get outrun, I got dunked on, humiliated, and spiritually broken in the space of 100 meters.

So yeah, in summary today I discovered that mixing sprints with intervals is an excellent way to make your lungs file for divorce, and teenagers are terrifyingly fast.

I just checked, according to garmin I reached a peak of 2:23min/km that makes me wonder how freakin fast were those sprinters running at?Screenshot_20241217_153153_Connect.jpg

Ah, the stark reality of age setting in. No way trying to compete with the whipper snappers is a good idea.

As a matter of interest what did your max HR reach? And more importantly did you find the racers you wanted?

I'm kinda disappointed that I never discovered a love running at school. I'm not built for speed, but I think I could've been good at long distances. Or that might just be wishful thinking in my old age.

My HR maxed out at 196.
I usually average 170 - 175 if I run at 3:05.
Garmin says my absolute max HR is 204 but I think it's 200 or so.

I Tried on various racers, Puma's Fast R, the new deviate elite 3, New balance supercomp elite and some adidas adios pro's. I will buy the fast R's when puma runs a sale again. 2nd on my list is the new balance supercomp elite's. The asics metaspeed also fealt like a nice fit. The adidas is a no go for me.

All shoes that are way out of my league. Only one I've heard of is the Puma.

Pumas got delivered early. And of course it's on my rest/recovery day. *sobs*

Not sure if I want to open the box now...

The Pumas, so full of potential, sit in their box like tiny imprisoned athletes whispering, "Unleash us, mortal. We were made to soar, not to gather dust!" And there you are, a beacon of discipline (sobs in foam roller), resisting the siren call of a box that probably smells like fresh motivation and factory glue.

My advice? Open the box. Let the shoes bask in the glow of your recovery day Netflix marathon. They’ll understand. They're Pumas, not judgy CrossFitters. 😉
