The official running thread™

Slightly OT...

My wife picked up a Garmin Forerunner 45 at Clarke Bay in Ballito last year........ when i had a closer look at it, it still briefly powered up, then it would die, as the battery was just to flat........ where can i go to charge it, to see if it still works.... and maybe see if i can get the owners details (if possible) on the watch.... dont want to spend money on charger etc

i am in Pretoria East (waterkloof ridge)

Cheers
I agree with taking it to sportsman if you really don't want to spend. If you don't mind a R99 spend, the cables are avaliable at TAL.

Got the Forerunner 165 now as there was a nice special on Amazon for it.

On another note something I don't understand is, this week I have done 3 runs, One at 6:30m/km pace another at 6:00m/km pace and another at 5:45m/km pace, my average heart rate was the lowest on the 5:45m/km pace. Why does it feel like my heart rate is lower when I run faster? Maybe my old watch wasn't accurate enough and the forerunner will be better

The FR165 is great. I love mine.

It's not normal to have a lower HR at a faster pace, at least I've never seen that. Faster pace normally equals higher HR. For me 6:30 pace is around 140-144bpm and 5:30 around 160.

Could be that at the slower pace your watch locked onto your cadence instead of HR. Compare cadence to HR and see if they look similar.

What I can see however is the 6:30 pace run, I did have a lot more elevation than the 5:45 pace one

There are many variables involved in HR. It could be time of day, the amount of sleep you had, the watch strap, the elevation of the route, etc etc.

I miss running so much. I really implore you guys, if you have any niggle, just give it its due rest and ensure you dont aggravate it further.

In my case I've almost spend up to 20k and have had no resolutions as to what my problem is. I now doubt my local GP and do not know what my next step is as its despondent to carry on and find no answers.

I have brand new shoes and a brand new watch sitting in their boxes unopened, hoping one day I will be back on the road, even if its 5km.

Definitely not cadence lock then. What were the temps like on each run?

The thing that normally ups my HR the most* is when its hot. The same route and pace on a colder day has a much lower HR.

[*Or encountering people on my route. That also spikes my HR due to anxiety.]

Why not go to a sports medicine facility? The Centre for Sports Medicine and Orthopedics in Rosebank Gauteng is amazing! They helped with my destroyed shoulder after the last big off on the MTB.

Felt really good today and decided to see how my running has been affected since my injury last year

First time under 1 hour for 10km so pretty happy with the result, the Heart rate was high though, also first run with my new Forerunner 165 watch.

@Crusader do you have screen protector on your watch, if so which one do you have? I might get one.

EDIT: First time under 1 hour for 10km since the injury, before the injury I could that comfortably

Nicely done! Although you should be careful pushing yourself too fast too quickly.

I don't have a screen protector for my FR165. When I got it there were none on the market, and so far I've been fine with just being REALLY careful not to bump it. If you find a good one let me know.

Will let you know. Yeah I ain't doing these runs often, maybe once every quarter. It just felt really good, so I wanted to see. Will continue with my usual 6:30-6:45 pace tomorrow and chill it out.

I am also potentially going to get someone to make a run calendar for me, His focus more on time rather than distance so instead of 8km easy run it would be 40 min easy run or 50 min easy run etc. Cause at the moment I just go out running and having a plan and structure would make it easier and make me stay more committed and not overtrain as I usually tend to do.

I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but doing the easy runs, my pace sometimes feels so slow that I just out of habit go faster and have to catch myself to go slow again

Are you using the Garmin suggested workouts? I started running in Nov 2023, just plodding along without any goal or structure. I got my Forerunner in April last year and the GSW has been a major driving force in keeping me running and actually improving my running immensely. Able to do 7K daily now where 2K was a big ask. Just take a look in the fitness thread to see my progress.

Just set it to use HR as the metric for the suggestions. Worked extremely well for me.

Easy runs are tough. I HATED HATED them at the start when I had to go at 08:00 pace to keep HR low enough. It sucked.
Then I put away my pride, stuck to the process, walked when I needed to and it worked...

I am not using the Garmin Suggested workouts, should probably try it out and see how it goes.

Planning on signing up for the Cape town Marathon or at least doing a Marathon this year and want to build a solid base before then. I started strong because Versus had their Back to base run series of running 50km in 10 days. So my Plan is now starting from Monday -> Sunday to do 20 or 25km the week and then add like 5-10% every week, so by the End of Jan planning to be at 30km per week and so forth.

Would also be nice if Puma can get those 50% specials again, I want to get myself a few pairs of those Pumas as they look really good and with the 50% off they are also a good price.

Time to swallow my pride this year and actually do 'slow'/'easy' runs and trust the process.

It's definitely worth trying GSW. I'm doing around 45 - 55km a week now based purely on the GSW workouts and I'm not training for anything specific.

You can have the GSW train you for the Cape Town Marathon specifically. Add the event to your calendar (haven't used this function myself yet) and your GSW workouts will be based on the time to the event and train you for that distance specifically.

CPT Marathon is a good first one to do. It was my first in 2017. Do what feels comfortable is the only advice I can give. Rather rock up on the start line niggle free, even if it means being underdone. I was doing 45 - 50km a week in preparation and I managed just fine.

Have a race the 15th of February so I added that to my Calendar and the watch picked it up and changed my workouts accordingly. I also set it to heart rate instead of pace like you mentioned.

So Will see how it goes, it is also nice that you can set the preferred long days and and what days you can train.

I'm doing Pirates on 16 Feb and have been using the garmin coach over the last few weeks to prep. It's stepping up the pace & distances now ; focusing on some anaerobic effect. Pretty cool.

What do these other websites listed above give extra over what a garmin coach for example gives you?

Cool. Is that for the race event itself? I know GSW allows you set the long run days, but I haven't seen the option to set days you can train.

Although I haven't updated my FR firmware in quite a bit. (If it ain't broke, don't fix it.) There was an issue with HR accuracy getting worse after a specific update so I didn't update mine.

I signed up to coach party program when entering jeppe half. It was included in the cost. This gave me a bakers cyst which the physio said it was probably caused by the strength routines so gave me gentler routines. I am now back on it and rather do the gentler ones plus the foot routines. Very cheap way to see if coaching works for you.
