The official running thread™

Cool. Is that for the race event itself? I know GSW allows you set the long run days, but I haven't seen the option to set days you can train.

Although I haven't updated my FR firmware in quite a bit. (If it ain't broke, don't fix it.) There was an issue with HR accuracy getting worse after a specific update so I didn't update mine.
Yes, you can find the even on the calendar or add it if it can't find it, it managed to find most of the events I run at. and yeah you can set the long run days. Mine has the option Training days, Long workout days and then the type (pace or HR)

The cool thing is, you can set which race is the primary one you train for and which events are supporting ones. So if you say they are supporting they are changing the program a bit, but not much you can also set that the race doesn't affect your program at all.

So yeah will see how it adopts to my running and stuff. Will update again at the end of the month and once a race is close how it changes the suggested workouts

Interesting. I haven't trained for any specific events so haven't looked into the feature at all.

Had my longest GSW long run yesterday. Conditions weren't great as it was very windy and the new route I tried didn't offer any protection against the wind, turned around and did rest of the run in town where the buildings helped block the worst of the wind.

Long run [goal 2:03:00@141]: 21.38 km / 2:07:00 / 5:56/km Avg Pace / 1,564 Calories / 156 bpm

Got a new PB in 10k: 0:58:30 (down from 0:58:43. A whole 13s!). And a new half marathon PB too: 2:07:00 (down from 2:20:15. A respectable 13:15 minutes!)

Looks like I'll have to take a running vest next time. I lost around 2.5kg during the run due to sweat loss, seems the 250ml flask I took with didn't quite cut it.

Had a look at my previous runs from before my injury and saw one run I did in Cape town. I saw my heart rate was average 145 for 5:25 pace, maybe I should move there for easier running

Overall doing good so far after my hiatus of running due to injury. I didn't expect to have such a hit though here is a run from before my injury

What I can say though is, Hills affect my heart rate a lot, would be chilling at 150 then suddenly 170 at the top of the hill. Might need to incorporate some Hill Repeats/ Sprints to get used to some more elevation

Puma has an extra 30% off discount on sale items. The sizes on offer are limited, but they seem to include the running shoes. The 30% off is an extra discount on the sale price, so it makes the shoes slightly more expensive than the 50% off sale.

@Sicarius404 might be worth checking out if your size is on offer.

How do you find the Puma sizes compare to Asics?

The Pumas are quite a bit narrower than the Asics, but length wise they seem to be true to size. Think snug fit. Asics have a much roomier toe box and a wider fit. I'm a size 8 and with Asics the 8.5 in the GT-1000 caused some issues with my 2nd toe on my right foot hitting/rubbing in the front. Went to size 9 in Asics which fixed the issue, but might be a tad too long now.

With the Puma the size 8's length is perfect, it's just a very snug fit. I'd love for it to be just 5mm wider. The only real issue I've had is with the Deviate Nitro 3 which has given me a black toenail on that 2nd toe on my right foot. At least I think it's the culprit, first noticed it after a sprint session last week with the Deviates. Nail has gone completely purple now. Not sure if running with other shoes is aggravating it now.

Edit: Since the Pumas are intended for faster paced runs I think the snug fit is to be preferred. Ran with my GT-2000 last evening and at 180km done with the shoe it felt so flat and unresponsive compared to my Velocity Nitro 2 which has done 220km.

How do you all buy shoes? My biggest issue is that I normally get around 800KM and +/- 9 months out of a pair before I can feel my feet are not happy, so buying a pair is not a short term commitment.

Ive tried stores like Randburg runner whose recommendations were great, until they werent. (my last purchase from them was a disaster).

Ive recently tried that machine at Sportsmans and I really like what they showed me, but Im also skeptical because the lady helping me seemed to battle with basic questions (maybe Im being horrible and the results wont be affected by the operator)

I did see a podiatrist after a pair of shoes caused me significant discomfort, but all I got out of that one was that I need wide or extra wide and neutral along with a custom inner of awesomeness that costs more than the shoes themselves.

tl;dr: how do you decide which shoes to buy.

Being in the middle of nowhere it's pretty much a throw of the dice for me as I need to order online. I basically check out Youtube reviews of the shoes (Run Testers are pretty good) and then take a chance on the sizing.

As luck would have it I just saw a special on New Balance’s site. 30% off of the 880 v14 and even in the 4e!

So thankfully Im sorted for a few months.

Yeah, forgot to add that most of the shoes I try are the ones that go on sale :)

Let me know how those turn out, it's one of the pairs I still want to give a go.

Maybe I have very forgiving feet, but I literally just grab what's on special. Usually either Asics or Nike, and normally between R800-R1200.

Obviously I try them on and walk around in them, and always get 1 size bigger.

Current road shoes are Nike Pegasus, R1100. Trail shoes are Maxed from Mr Price, R700.

I do belive that proper strength training offsets the over reliance of support from shoes, not saying I want to run in slippers, but definitely don't need R3k shoes with a carbon plate etc.

This is just my own experience and advice based on roughly 2500km per year ;)

Thanks! Ive tried that and I can kinda get away with it for a while, but my feet are a bit wider so if I dont get something that fits right I destroy the shoes very quickly and my its not kind to my feet either. Nike for example is just too narrow for my feet (even the wide shoes) and I will get blisters even on short runs.

Im also quite heavy so my feet are taking a proper beating. Maybe getting to 2500KM a year will also help ;) but for now my aim is 100 a month

I believe Altra sells wider fore-foot shoes, I have never owned a pair but heard decent reviews from fellow runners (both road and trail), they are a bit pricey though.

I'm about 90kg at the moment and confirm the shoes are taking a beating, busy trying to get back to sub 85kg this year (for me, when I was less than 85kg, I suffered considerably less strain on the legs/feet).

@ShaunSA if you have the time to watch. This method is working for me. Did a 57min 10km with an average HR of 143bpm.

MAF running paired with strength sessions is the way to keep away from getting injured. This is what Lindsey Parry preaches.

I have tried it before and it was great for my knees. Strength training is something else... I just can't seem to get into it even though I know I should
