The official running thread™

Anyone been able to find any good budget race / tempo shoes ? Asics has a noosa tri seires which is pretty good and well priced but it might be the ugliest shoe on the market.

If you aren't training for anything specific how long should your long runs be?

My Garmin seems to have gone into full sadist mode with a 2:13:00 long run on the books for next Saturday. That's after a 2:08:00 long run yesterday. It seems Garmin wants me to do a half marathon every weekend now. Which feels kinda excessive. I mean I've already done 2 half marathon distance runs now. And the year has only begun...

Ive just come back from the specialist. What appears to have happened in my case, is that I caused an injury from overtraining and then never stopped to treat it and have caused scar tissue in the area.

Basically no running for 6 months :crying:.

I might have to delete strava app to not get depressed.

Take that 6 month break and come back stronger!

I wont survive that. Im wondering what Garmin are you using and did you setup some sort of training plan?

It's a Forerunner 165. I'm just following the daily suggested workouts, no training plan.

Body seems to be handling it pretty well. RHR is 44 bpm and HRV is steady in balanced zone.

The way my Garmin comments feel lately "slower than previous efforts" "slower than average" "slower than last month" "slower than last year" "slower than last decade"

Is that from the training performance function?

I think I should be glad I opted for the cheaper Garmin without that functionality...

Oh wait I blamed poor Garmin for fokoli. I have the cheapy 45 anyways

This is Strava Analysis
My Garmin gives me a rating after the first km or so, not sure what it's based on (speed v heart rate i would assume) but it can be either +3 or +4 or -1 , -2 if it thinks you are slacking off.

edit: Okay, so I found out what this actually measures.

What is the Performance Condition Feature on My Garmin Fitness Device?

The Performance Condition metric is a real-time assessment of your ability to perform compared to your average fitness level. This metric ranges from -20 to +20 with each point representing approximately 1% of the VO2 Max set on your device. During the first 6-20 minutes of an activity the device will alert you to your current Performance Condition. This can also be used as an indicator of fatigue level, especially at the end of a long activity. Performance Condition is calculated using the following:

Running:

  • VO2 Max
  • Pace
  • Heart rate

But doesn't the higher end Garmins also give you an execution score after a workout? Something like you achieved 60%

I'd hate for my watch to do that.

If you do the recommended workout (which i hardly ever do) they give you a score. One time it recommended interval training and I almost died trying to keep at the pace it wanted me to run. :X3:

The suggested daily workouts are basically my entire training program. So far I can't say that it has asked way too much from me aside from the first month where my ability was nowhere near what it expected me to be. But those were base runs, nothing too intensive. Then again my Garmin has basically started and been there for my entire brief running journey so far, so I'd expect it to know my limits pretty well by now.

Out of curiosity what pace did it want you to do? Do you have your suggestions set up based on pace or HR? HRR seems to be the better option, but it still shows pace goals for Sprints and Anaerobic sessions.

I will admit the base runs are very reasonable in terms of my normal pace. I just don't usually do them because of usually run with other people.

It wanted me to do almost sprint pace intervals which if fine, but each interval was like 4-5 minutes. Managed the first set (just) but fell off badly on.the 2nd.

For a half marathon I would peak at 28-29km's for the long run. For the marathon I hardly exceed 36-37 kms. Imo you should do atleast 1 long run of 20 -25kms per week. Currently I do 1 medium long run on Thursday ie 18-20km and 1 x long run usually on a Sunday 25-28km's. Garmin seems to be more or less spot on. I'm curious how Garmin structure it's workouts ie. Does it follow a 7,9 or 14 day cycle.

Anyways It's been a while since I've posted. Hope everyone is doing well.
