The official running thread™

Took part in a 3K fun walk over the weekend. Decided to jog the last 1.5K or so, but had a group of five teens (guessing 10 -13) who wanted a race. Gave them a good run for their money. 3 fell away when their stamina ran out, passed 1 close to the end and almost got the other. If it was 5K he would've fallen behind too. I ended up finishing 2nd and backtracked to complete a full 5K. Not bad for someone 4 times their age. :D

Then I went and did a 16.23 km base run that afternoon since that was my actual suggested workout. Quite impressed with myself.

Yes it's all fun and games till some 80 year old leaves you in the dust. Her or some mum pushing a stroller with a toddler in tow.

What's the best way to determine your Max HR on a run? I tried to do the 3 min max effort x 2 which Garmin suggests, but I guess my max effort wasn't hard enough since I only managed to hit 180 bpm. Tried two hill reps too, but the hill was only around 200m so only hit 180 there too.

I did this once long ago, you need to eliminate fatigue from the equation as much as possible and you need a heart rate belt.

So a easy run for 1.5km to get your hr up then start at a fast pace and just keep upping it untill you can't, so like 100m up pace by 15secs, etc etc, when you feel like you are about to die you do a flat out sprint for the last 100m.

You won't be able to check your actual heart rate while running because you will be sucking air and don't expect a 200bpm heart rate if you have never trainer hr before.

The actual goal is 1.6km (a mile) flat out with a last 300m faster and a 100m sprint but unless you are an Olympic runner there is no way fatigue won't get you before you reach max hr.

Not a nice test.

That one doesn't sound like fun at all. Will try to give it a go once I've recovered a bit more.

My max which was recorded on my FR165 was 190 in November. Looks like that run was when I did a 5K PB. I recently got a chest strap so want to try to see how it compares. Guess I could always try for a new PB now and see.

2nd 10k …. Yes I know it’s less but I’m claiming it

I feel better than the one last week but it was tougher

HRM Pro Plus arrived today. It was supposed to be a rest day for me today, but decided to take it out for a quick spin. Played around with some varied paces, but nothing too strenuous.

FR165 on (older sprint session)

Initial thoughts is that the HR tracks much closer for the short higher effort intervals where the optical sensors lag quite a bit. I'll need to get used to how it feels wearing a chest strap. It feels very strange at the moment.

The real test will come when I do a sprint or anaerobic session. Garmin had an anaerobic session on the books for tomorrow, but after this run it's giving me two rest days in a row. Hopefully that will change by tomorrow morning.

One disappointment is that I can't see the L/R balance (Ground contact time balance) since the FR165 doesn't support it.

@8letters If I understand it correctly the HR strap is only used during activities right? How tight should it be worn? Bit concerned I'm not wearing it tight enough or too tightly.
Correct although there are 3rd party apps that allows you to use the HR monitor to record HR data during the day if you have some underlying health condition that requires monitoring but for that I would just use the watch built in HR. I usually wear the Strap when I have a speed or hill session planned and for every other easy run above 4:30 pace I just rely on the watch built in HR monitor. Sorry for the late response. Prepping for London marathon. Had my highest peaking week ever 184km's 2 weeks ago and gradually started lowering the mileage. Hoping for a 2:21-2:22 marathon.

It should be tight enough to not start slipping after a few km's Sometimes when the strap is all full of sweat it gets heavy and slippery and tends to slip downwards when you run. It will take a few sessions to get the adjustments right.

Wow! Good luck with the marathon.

No worries on the late reply. I'm just getting used to the HR strap. Based on my limited testing so far the wrist based HR of the Garmin is plenty accurate enough for normal use. Low intensity runs line up well with the HR shown on the Mi Band and the Garmin is better than that. Still need to do a proper interval session (sprint/anaerobic/VO2Max) where the strap will really perform.

Tried to go for a 5K PB yesterday to try to see my Max HR with the strap, but that didn't quite work. HR only got to 181 bpm and I know I can go higher than that. Looks like my body went into endurance mode so HR didn't peak. Hopefully shorter intense intervals might peak my HR. Based on the info Garmin was happy to up my max HR to 190, which is about where I reckon it should be.

I did manage to get a PB though which came as a suprise since I had to use a different route which is not as flat as my normal one and has two uphill sections. Now down to 23:21 (4:40 avg pace). Down from 24:37.

Congrats on the PB. to max out HR , do a proper warmup and then look for a long hill. Go up the hill at a steady effort until you can't anymore. that should get the blood flowing and the heart pumping hard. Hill sprints should also work. Alternatively I would do a 3km all out near vomit pace lol

That 5K was an attempt at vomit pace, but I think I misplaced my vomit running gear since I couldn't seem to push harder.

But did you vomit though? If not then you should try again.
No, no I did not. My chest was burning though. First time in ages for that.

It's surprising how much progress I've made over a bit more than a year of running. I'm obviously not build for speed, but still. 5K PBs over the past year. I remember that I almost died when I did the 28:32 min one, think my HR went to 188 on that one. Yesterday's felt like a walk in the park in comparison.

You are definitely sub 20 min capable. Just need to incorporate the right training, Drills, Strength work etc. My wife, who never ran more than 4 km in her life recently ran a sub 21 min 5km. She used to laugh at me doing drills and said I could use my drill techniques on the dance floor cause it looked like I was dancing... but theres method to the madness. Propper stride, hip rotation, drills, speedwork and you will be amazed at what you will achieve what you never thought you were capable off.

Did you run in your deviate nitro's? if not then you can shave off another 20seconds

Any specific drill recommendations?

No. This was witht he Velocity 3s. My black toenail is only now recovering so still a bit weary of the Deviates.

Did you see Puma had a 25% Flash sale yesterday? Hoping for something better than that.

You don't need toenails. I lost like 6 already this year. PB guaranteed if you run in the deviates.
For drills:
Carioca
A Skip
B Skip
High knees
Butt Kick

I Do my high knees with resistance bands strapped around my ankles and the back part attached to a thing that's screwed into the the wall. It's my most ridiculous exercise but creates explosive power, stimulates fast twitch muscles in your legs while also promoting stride length.
