The official running thread™

Well done man! You will love it!

I am contemplating going this year, as it's only 3 weeks after the Comrades, I don't want to injure myself as I have Mont Aux Sources early September.

If I run it, it will be a last-minute thing.
Let me know. Maybe we can meet up if you do it.

so, quick question

My son is 15 (he is on the autism spectrum) and has taken a liking in running after i gave him a Garmin Forerunner watch (found charger on Temu for like R28, and replacement straps for a bargain.. it works perfectly) . see original question here (Linky)

i take him for parkruns which he enjoys a lot (i am 55 i dint run).......... being on the spectrum means that eating healthy is sometimes a challenge as they are very picky ito food.... he has out of his own accord asked to start trying new things (which is working out lekker).

so, short story long, best way to get him into running would be ??????? (he is mumbling something about the comrades one day
:) )

I would presume joining a running club ? found one in the our area which is really not expensive (https://www.supereagles.co.za/)

any other advice would be appreciated

cheers

Keep up the parkruns for sure - and then maybe approach a couple of running clubs to see if they're willing to offer a trial/test to see how he handles the social aspect/fitting in? Though it sounds like running is very therapeutic for him so probably a winner.

Also - you start doing the parkruns too. I'm sure you'd enjoy doing some training runs together?

Thanks for advice... Except for me taking up running... Ain't gonna happen 😁

Not sure his current fitness level but some running clubs have programs such as couch to 10km where they meet x times a week for a structured program, they then sign them up for a graduation race at the end.

How is he in social situations/crowds? My anxiety spikes in large groups of people so running clubs weren't ideal for me. I run to get away from people ;) What really got me committed to running and keeps me engaged is the Garmin daily suggested workouts. It takes the thinking out of running. I just do the workout the watch suggests. I think the Forerunner 45 should also have that feature.

Runs can become great routines (same route for different workouts etc.). And seeing the data from the run can be a hook too.

I use the Mi Band 7 as backup device during my runs. Mostly just to keep an eye on HR compared to the Forerunner 165. The Mi Band 7 has grown vastly inaccurate as far as distance goes, but the HR readings were still good for steady state runs. I decided to upgrade to the Xiaomi Smart Band 10 Pro to use as a backup since fitness bands also feature GPS now.

The app is a bit clunky, the 10 Pro feels a bit bulky compared to my old band and I'm not a huge fan of the strap. I'm VERY impressed after my first run. The data seems to be pretty spot on compared to my Forerunner and seems to give the same amount of info a device 4 x the price does.

It even has training status ("fitness state") and training load indicator which the FR165 doesn't have. And there's a running ability measurement which gives you an ability status (beginner, novice, athlete, advanced athlete and elite athlete). Surprised that I'm counted as an athlete ;)

Event the race prediction times it shows are on par with the Garmin.

The GPS track seems good enough to me. Slight deviation around the corners and it took slightly longer to get a lock than the FR, but that might just have been due to first time use.

It will be interesting to see how it does with some interval sessions...

Then a running club could be a good fit. Running is a great calming routine especially once your fitness is there and it becomes something where your brain can just switch off and enjoy the miles.
