The official running thread™

20 days to a 31min 5km on the 27th of Jan? Holy hell. So in other words, I'm progressing slowly :(
It all depends on how much you want to push yourself, I do a little too much sometimes and it bites me, my wife eased into running and even after 4 years has done a sub 35 min 5km only a few times. I pushed way to hard for my sub 30min 5km though but your body etc adjusts accordingly. I now do all my runs with her as its more fun to run together. I would rather increase our fitness together than chase a time, I am never going to be number 1 may as well enjoy the run if that makes sense?

Thanks. I suppose it's gonna be a choice between progressing faster on the runs, or keeping the total workouts where they are. :( Took me a couple of years to get to the level of unfitness where I am, will have to be a patient to get to the level of fitness I want.

Patient is better, make it a lifestyle change

Is this the one that used to be run in an estate or something? Ive heard its a nice one..

Yes, you start just outside the estate and then run into the estate (Ebotse Golf estate) and then finish where you started again. But like I said at about 4.5 k's there is a steep hill that probably just comes at the wrong time in the race, most people walk there, and the people that run it are running slow....LOL!

As indicated by someone already, typically you need to take one size larger in running shoes than you normally wear.

Wouldn't that mean more slipping?
No. The larger size is to account for your feet swelling whilst running. I highly recommend that you go to a good running shoe store or foot doctor where you can run and they recommend a good pair and size based on your feet etc. It cost me 600 rand for the appointment but was well worth it. Incorrect shoes messed my wife's running up for a year.

How long did take you to get to running continuously for 5km as an example? I'm finishing up a 11week garmin coach program, and it had me running 2min with 1min breaks and tbh it was bloody hard. Fair enough, 11 weeks ago I wouldn't have survived the distance and 2min timings, just want to check other experiences. :)
I started Parkrun with having done no more than 300 metres of continuous running in over 20 years. My first Parkrun was 42 min, and I ached for a week. It took a year before I could run the entire way.

I'm also East Rand, so I made the Ebotse parkrun my home parkrun, but the one by Germiston Lake is also nice, little bit easier than the ebotse parkrun as it is flatter. Ebotse has a uphill close to the finish that makes it difficult
Most of the East Rand ones are so lovely and flat! Atlas is awesome, Boksburg Stadium too, Brakpan's not bad, Victoria Lake is super fast, Ebotse is pretty flat :), Bulithando is good, and Homestead Lake is a good one.

Weight makes a huge difference. I'm a big guy, and I can improve my times noticeably when I lose a couple of kg.

Couldnt agree more every KG you lose the faster you get. When I started in Jan 2015 I was about 98kg by March I was 88KG. I was doing 30-40km a week at this point. That was approx 3000-4000 calories burnt a week. Running in particular is a fat melting exercise some of the best cardio you can do. Also considering how fast you can do it its one of the most efficient as well. You will soon do 1 hour 10km and that is appx 1000 calories!

Remember dont over do it.

I do agree although there are many exceptions. At my local park run there are many much older much bigger guys who out pace me.

I'm a small guy at 60kg with my best time at 26m for 5km, shows how fast they are.

Many bigger people out there pushing harder than me.

Practice helps too, and if they've been doing it a long time, they may be quite good. My best was 27:13, at around 108kg.

struggled a bit this morning, though using my cheap mr price shoes my blisters didnt get agitated xD

First and second place in the 2017 Comrades was taken by runners in Mr Price shoes.

yeah i get but I am talking like the R150 very plain vibe shoes, not the R400 + better ranges calssified as "running shoes"
