The official running thread™

Practice helps too, and if they've been doing it a long time, they may be quite good. My best was 27:13, at around 108kg.
That's damn impressive, i stopped running for a few months and now i'm struggling to get back into rhythm, i do 28m now. But I've been lazy, i decided to start working out at home to compliment the running, hopefully i'll get better.

This morning went ok, my pace felt more constant and my blisters are doing better in the cheapy shoes, still only the 2km @ 13.5 minutes though with 2 walk bits in between. i have a goal of 5km by april, at this pace i dont think i will make it :/

How do you guys manage the phone on a run, hold it in your hand, use a arm pouch(which often seem to slip all the time), put it in a pocket?

I have a Samsung Note so its a bit of a brick and mission to run with.

Used to use the arm pouch for my cell phone when on the road (but don't run with it anymore). It fits nicely into my backpack for the trails though.

See lots of people with arm pouches and few have those fanny bags :D, never run with a phone personally,

Armpouch, pocket bounces too much, Armpouch doesn't slip at all for me, though the note is big, I started off using my spare phone then synching the data so that primary phone updates with the data on strava or whichever app.

i need to get my head right and push a bit, need to up the km and drop the kg, hopefully doing 5km park run on sat and wanna see if i can drop about 4kg by mid may

Haven't read the entire thread so might've been mentioned but when i needed to get my head right i found that changing up your routine works wonders.

Now that you're body is used to running, Instead of doing a normal 2km jog rather do a bit of HIIT, or add in stairs. Sprint for 15 secs, walk for 30/45s, sprint again, walk and repeat. Really make sure your out of breathe after each sprint. Even if you have to extend your rest for 1 min its okay, just sprint your lungs out.

Really good way to mix it up, improve your fitness, burn more calories and get your head back in the endurance game :D

this morning went ok, 13.5 mins @ 2km, walked less had a more constant jog, want to do the entire 2km at a jog by end of the week.

How long did take you to get to running continuously for 5km as an example? I'm finishing up a 11week garmin coach program, and it had me running 2min with 1min breaks and tbh it was bloody hard. Fair enough, 11 weeks ago I wouldn't have survived the distance and 2min timings, just want to check other experiences. :)

It really depends on the person and their base fitness.

I basically started running at the beginning of Jan, did my first 5km in about 35 minutes on the 26th of Jan, first 10km mid-Feb and a 25min 5km timetrial at the end of Feb, now I'm up to a 56min 10 km and 90min 15km. All of that said, my base fitness was pretty good when I started running because I cycled a lot last year (around 6500km) so it goes back to my initial answer of "it depends"

I generally run with a belt pouch (Mr Price Sport sells ones big enough for large phones). When I plan to take photos on the way, I run with the phone in my hand in a leather pouch, as it's quicker to get the phone out while running.

run went well this morning, 13 minutes, better pace and only one walking break that was short. Is there such a thing as proper form? i feel like i am running hunched over a little when i am tired?

Yes there is most definitely proper form. Watch a few videos on YouTube, that's what I did when I started out they will explain how your stance etc should be. This can play a massive role in your running esp on longer distances.

Form comes from core strength. During a run (particularly a longer one) when your core starts to 'collapse' (due to weakness), you inadvertently and very subtly start trying to compensate. So you run more hunched over and your knees turn in on each step. Over time, this causes things to happen like your hips to get out of alignment with your spine as well as the dreaded ITB. In addition to your running, work on your core. It will keep your form good, allowing you to run longer and faster as well as keep you injury free.

Couldn't agree more on this point, this year I have made the effort to go to gym specifically to supplement my running. I do 15 min rowing, 15 min stepper and 15 min cycling with some time spent specifically on core. I have seen significant improvements to my running since doing this.

thanks guys will work on it, i have been doing strength training on and off for years, i'm probably a bit imbalanced also especially in my arms and chest, will work more on my core and see how it goes

Awesome, keep checking in here. There are a lot of niggle etc that you go through as you move up in distance pace etc and we can help you through it. Also check your work outs on the check in thread. Little community going there as well :)

Today went well also only one small walk stretch in the middle. Also stopped at Mr Price on the way home and bought myself a pair of their mid range runners, they feel quite good walking in them. I know you all recommended going to a store specialising in this but I really can't justify dropping a grand or more on a pair of shoes for such a short run at this point, maybe once I get more into it, as so done pointed out many runners doing comrades and other marathons use these, in time to come I will upgrade, let's see how it goes

Lekka, i'm gonna go for my first run again today in like 3 months, not looking forward to it hahah.
Hopefully i can get about 4km in.
Another thing that could potentially help your running, not sure if your lifestyle permits but i find running/exercising in a fasted state is amazing. Loads more energy and just feel good during the workout, varies from person to person but maybe give it a bash. Carry on carrying on!
