The official running thread™

cool i think i will up the distance gradually. like 500m-1km a week kind of thing, but will see how it goes.

I was pondering getting a fitness watch to get more accurate results but im in two minds, what would you guys recommend on the entry level side of things? the one idea i like about it is pacing.
Go to OLX, I use a tomtom multisport its almost 4 years old, but I bought my wife's tomtom cardio for about R1200. Ppl use them a few times and never again. Really accurate. I just use mine for running not as my everyday watch.

It depends on what you want from the watch if only needs to do running and not things like swimming you could look at the Garmin Forerunner 35 or 235 or the Polar M430. If you need a full multi-sport watch then it's going to set you back a fair amount more though.

I have the Garmin Forerunner 235. It's not exactly entry level (was about R4,200) but it does what I need and more importantly, assuming I look after it, will do the job for years so was happy to spend some money on it.

Anyone been to one of these stores:
1. Run Specialist Store
2. Runners Rest
3. The Sweat Shop
4. The Athlete’s Foot
in Cape Town? Looking to buy good running shoes after analysing my running style. Any suggestions as to which is best?

I went to sportsmans warehouse tygervalley, they tested me I am "neutral" style.

So I went with ASIC gel nimbus 20 last year model they had on special, very happy with the shoe.

The Sweat Shop for me. Bought my previous Gel Nimbus 20's from them. Was super happy with them. Using the 21's now

2km @ 12.40 this morning. will stick to it this week i think and build from there

For watches, the Suunto Spartan Sport/Trainer have been selling pretty cheap lately, and they're outstanding sports watches.

That is actually an Afrikaans company.

This will happen from time tom time. Also, 6:15 per KM is not a bad pace at all.

I found Fartlek is one of the best ways to get my fitness back after slacking off for a while. Essentially you just run at variable speeds, or do a run walk combination. It makes things a bit less tedious as well.

R4k is above my budget :p

I have a Suunto Spartan Sport Wrist HR that I'm looking to sell. It's the blue one. Was thinking around R3k? If you're interested.

On a side note, I had a revelation last night. I've never really been able to run for extended durations, as my freaking shins would murder me. Last night, I tried taking smaller steps.. Hey presto, no longer limited by the pain in my shins. Now I'm limited by fitness, which I can work on.

EDIT: Not the sport, the trainer. This one, in blue.

EDIT2: Just scouted the pricing online, seems that R2.5k is probably more reasonable.
