The official running thread™

Surely this equation relies on what type of effort the run is?

Finally got a parkrun back in my town, had a nice run.
Probably. I used to weigh myself before and after workouts. It's crazy the amount of water your body loses when you work out.

I don't do park runs anymore. I prefer to run on my own. Unless I'm the pacemaker at a half marathon for the 80 or 90 min runners.

I'm doing my first 10k trail run in a couple of weeks.

Since I'm still fat and slow, I'm guessing around 2hours for the run (based on my on road time of 1:20:00).

I want to carry 1-1.5 litres of water with me, not toouch, but at least something.

Any recommendations for a cost effective running pack or vest? Something that is available in XL.

Also, opinions on vest vs pack? I see Cape Union Mart has a small 2l pack that can take a 1.5l bladder, but it only has a chest strap, no waist strap. Which do you prefer and why?
Big and slow means you carrying more weight for longer so you need more hydration than the average runner.
The more compact the pack the better so you can use it on any longish run without the hassle of stopping over at garages or carrying it around the waist.
The Aonijie brand is excellent value and and a quality pack is important. Takes quite a pounding. Check that out.

This comes with the bladder so good value.

That one does not have a bladder included, it explicitly states it :)

I went to Sportsman's Warehouse and tried on a couple of different brands.
The First Ascent (large) was tiny. The Aonijie Moderate Gale 5L in L/XL was a bit better, but still uncomfortably small. That was without a bladder fitted.
The Osprey and Salomon ones fit much better, but I'm not ready to commit R3k to this.

I am heading to Decathlon to try on their hydration vests.

This specific race has one water/aid station for the 10k, but I will probably still try and carry at least 1.5l.

I have a Garmin 245 Music that has a line on the screen. I bought this from Amazon in December. I booked it in for repairs at the Garmin office in Rosebank but I'm feeling very reluctant to take it there after reading the recent reviews.
Has anyone taken in their device for repairs under warranty lately? I really don't want to be without the watch for a month and would rather use it until I travel to Europe.
***UPDATE***
Garmin decided to replace the watch with a newer 255. I have asked them if they can give me the music edition of the watch but will hear what they say. I don't mind paying the difference. Very pleased with the outcome so far and the turnaround times.

Garmins aftersales imo has always been great. Back in the day I had the forerunner 10. It stopped charging after 3 months of excessive usage. Sent it to them for repairs and a week later they sent a new one back. Sadly the second one only worked for about 2 months. When I sent it back to them they upgraded me to the fore runner 15 at no cost.

+1 for great service from Garmin. I had a Vivoactive HR that died 2 days before my first triathlon and the guys at Garmin sorted me out quick. The device they gave me was a refurb one but its still working 4 years later

Happy to report that I managed to finish the run, it was grueling, but so worth it.

The beach sections were a killer, on and off the beach for like 5km's, it was by far worse than the climbing.

4 months of training, early mornings, many km's on the road and trails..

Note: The elevation is not 2576m, but closer to 1750m (need to clean my barometer vent)

So I got this one:
https://www.decathlon.co.za/trail-r...-trail-running-bag-15-l-blackslashbronze.html

There is also a 10l version, and both fit reasonably well, but the 15l included a 2l bladder.

I just now need to not stuff the bag full of stuff. Just keys, phone, and a couple of energy bars/gels.
Nice.

I guess trial and error is the only way with bags.

You might also from time to time have to roll up a shell jacket and put it into the bag, so if it's slightly bigger then it's not all that bad. Just make sure it fits snug otherwise it moves all around your back.

I always have to tuck my shirt into my pants otherwise my shirt keeps "climbing" up my back :)

Got a good dose of runners diahrea this morning. To much info I know. Anyways training to lead the sub 80 min pack runners. Will lead them 3/4 of the distance. This run was a mistake. Should have gone slower. Will take a day off to recover.

@ShaunSA How are you feeling now and how is the footing at the new PR? I will be there in two weeks time.

Feeling good. Hoping to get back on the road again this week.

Lynnfield is pretty good. More trail run than parkrun. Incline is a bit more than Ashy's. But time-wise most of the guys finished in about the same time. For me it's easier underfoot than Piggly and Settlers. An odd hole to look out for but that's about it. Looking forward to tackling it when I am hundreds

No running for me today or tomorrow. Stomach kept me up for most of the night. I feel weak today. Will use some USN muscle fuel for recovery. Seems to always help.

Been struggling with dehydration so got this for my long runs. Very lightweight and holds 2L.
Going to come in handy especially when the summer heat kicks in.

If you road-run, stick a R50 into your pocket and get water/cooldrink at the petrol stations - I treat them like water points :)

What I like about this method is that I don't have to go garage hunting especially when you're following a group.
Also, practically no stoppage time so elapsed time/moving time difference is less.

Absolutely, I usually only buy once on a 20k run, so it's a small trade-off from having to run with a pack.

On the Trail then yes, 100% mandatory
