The official running thread™

The Pumas, so full of potential, sit in their box like tiny imprisoned athletes whispering, "Unleash us, mortal. We were made to soar, not to gather dust!" And there you are, a beacon of discipline (sobs in foam roller), resisting the siren call of a box that probably smells like fresh motivation and factory glue.

My advice? Open the box. Let the shoes bask in the glow of your recovery day Netflix marathon. They’ll understand. They're Pumas, not judgy CrossFitters. 😉
But you know that if I open the box I'm damn well going to want to go for a test run with at least one of them.

You can always call it an "active recovery test jog". Just make sure you wear both shoes.Running with one Puma would probably send a very confusing message to the neighbourhood. 🏃‍♂️😆

LOL. Obviously meant one pair.

Have opened the box and tried on the Fizzy Apple Velocity Nitro 3s. Must say based on initial impression the fit feels better than the Nitro 2. I like the upgrades to the heel padding and the tongue. Heel definitely feels more secure and the Powertape also adds a bit of stability. The fit is quite snug so I might have to consider a thinner sock depending on how a test run goes. But so far I'm very impressed. Looks like a worthy upgrade.

Oh, yeah I kinda forgot that you ordered several pairs of shoes.
Did you try on the Deviate's?

Still working my way up to it. Surprisingly the Lapus Lazuli (is it purple or is it blue?) Velocity Nitro 3's seem to fit even better than the Apple ones. Which is weird since they should basically be exactly the same. The LL Velocity Nitro 3's seems to be just a smidge roomier for some reason.

To me th LL and apple fiz feels exactly the same. I think the ll is supposed to resemble a evening sunset. Midnight blue with slight pink orange hue.

Have the Deviate 3's on foot now. The tongue design is... interesting. It's comfortable, but a tad weird with the asymmetrical design. Not 100% sure how I feel about it. The toe box does seem slightly roomier than the Velocity. The plate isn't really noticeable just putting them on, but walking around there's a definitely louder 'slap' to each step. Overall quite a comfortable fit, will see how my problematic pinky toe handles a run.

Now I just want to take these out for a spin so badly. Think I'll try to do a 'recovery' run with the Velocity 3's and tackle tomorrow's threshold run with the Deviate's. Heck, I might be so excited that I even do a morning run!

Super chuffed with my purchases. If they perform as well in the runs I'll have no regrets.

You will feel the plate work your arches on the first few runs. It takes some getting used to plated shoes. Some people say it gave them itb but imo I doubt that. Cannot blame a shoe if a person has poor running mechanics haha

Might just be a lacing difference. More testing needed.

Hopefully I'm not one of those. Really interested to see how they'll perform.

The deviates are prone to cause some heel slip. Do a runners knot if that happens. Seems to fix it for most runners.

Will do. They seemed snug enough when I tried them on, will see how it goes during a run.

Tested the Velocity 3 in a recovery run and they felt very good. Had to force myself to keep slow and not try to run at a faster pace.

So sad I missed these puma specials, seem to be hearing great things about them

Would you say that the shoes feel fine even though you pronate a bit, I did the gait test and the people said I pronate when running, so I had New Balance 860v12s and then Middle of this year got Asics GT-2000, the New Balance felt way better at the start then the Asics did, but now that I have some Km's in the Asics it feels really good.

Does Neutral vs Stability really make that big of a difference.

@8letters that training plan you have mentioned also sounds intriguing, I have just been winging it and hoping for the best.

It would depend on the severity of pronation and direction you pronate. I tend to pronate inward on my midfoot. Haven't gone for gait analysis, but that's where the wear on my shoes are. I started out with Asics GT-1000 and GT-2000 and then got the Velocity Nitro 2's. The Velocity Nitro 2 soon became the shoes I did most of my runs in. They just felt good, lighter, more responsive and versatile. Especially for faster paces. I still use the Asics for long runs when I get tired and my form tends to go. And the Brooks Glycerin GTS also feels great for that. (Picked up 3 of Brooks' stability line-up since I missed the previous Puma sale which I saved up for and was planning to get Velocity Nitro 3s in. Then of course another sale came up AFTER I bought the Brooks)

I haven't had any issues using the VN2 for a combined 309 km. The VN2 are pretty stable even without any specific stability elements. The Velocity Nitro 3 feels like they will bring even more stability to the table. Puma have added Powertape reinforcement to the medial side of the shoe (where my pronation is) and the new tongue design and heel padding locks your foot in nicely. Based on a quick [slow] first run, I haven't experienced any issues. Will need to do a few more runs at faster paces to get a better idea.

Stability shoes can make a huge difference in pain/strain experienced if you need it. Starting out my knees were killing me until I got the GT-1000s. That made all the difference. Now my muscles are stronger and my form has improved so I can get away with something more neutral. It also seems that modern stability shoes are far more subtle in their stability elements. They are there if you need them, but won't hinder you if you don't.

[Not sure if all that made sense.]

I haven't had a chance to work on it yet. I would like to do 2 or 3 versions of it beginner, intermediate and advance. The plans should be robust enough to improve 5 and 10km times but also build up endurance enough to allow you to complete a half marathon. I'll most likely get around to it on Friday or over the weekend.

What you said does make sense, I also experienced sort of the same where I had injuries in my feet when running with neutral shoes, then went to stability and it got a lot better and now when I run with Neutral shoes again from time to time, the pain isn't there anymore

Perfect, I Started taking running more seriously March of this year, but last 2-3 months couldn't run as much due to a shin injury, but it is feeling better and I want to do a Marathon next year so want to train for that. My first 10km was October 2022 if I remember correctly and I did it in 1h14 mins. This year my PB for 10km was 55 and my 5km time went from 34:42 to 24:40 as my PB. I also did my first Half Marathon in 1:58:54 felt really good as I have never been able to run this far due to injuries etc...

I am unfortunately a Size 9 - 9.5 and I see they only have size 7 remaining :(

Sadly no Fast R or Deviate Nitro elite in my size.

Anyways... There are several garmin watches marked down on Amazon right now. Some good ones to look at - forerunner 255 music edition, Forerunner 165 and the Vivoactive 5. the Forerunner 55 is marked down apporx 40%.

not bad IMO.

Hmmm might look into that, as I currently have the Vivoactive 3 ( had it since Jan 2020 ) and was looking for an upgrade.

I was looking at the Forerunner 165, but feels kinda scummy from Garmin to just remove features from it and only have it available on the 265 and 965

They still have the ForeverRun available in a size 9. With Puma, there's no need to go half a size up; their sizing already runs about half to a full size larger compared to other brands like Hoka, Adidas, and Asics.

Those are excellent times! Focusing on improving your 5K and 10K performance will naturally enhance your 21K time. It’s all about first achieving maximum aerobic capacity, then transitioning to maximum aerobic efficiency for endurance events like the half or full marathon.

The last bit is hard though, I don't know if it is the same for everyone else, but pushing to get my 5k PB was harder than the 10k races I did.

Would it be achievable to get a 50min 10k, 23 min 5k and 1h50 min Half marathon by end of next year.

My goal is to reach 20min 5km, but I have feeling that is going to take a few years at minimum, I am enjoying running however at the moment so not in a rush :)
