Is there a major difference in speed between the normal cable connect SSD's and these new fangled goed that goes directly onto the mobo? (I mean would the difference be more pronounced than say going from a mechanical HDD to SATA for example.)

Any good dependable SSD's you'd recommend? (Maybe one as a boot up drive, but then one also as a game drive)

Thanks pplz.

On paper/practice there is no real difference between 2.5" sata and m.2 sata ssds. On paper there is a big difference between sata & nvme BUT in practice it translates to a 1-2 sec difference in normal desktop/gaming usage so it's nothing close to hdd vs ssd.

The samsung evos are probably the best out there but come at a premium, rather go for a not so great performance drive that is cheaper. For the price of one samsung evo 1tb you can buy 2x 1tb mushkins and have beer money for a weekend left. Size trumps speed as they're all plenty fast.

Hi guys, so I've ordered all my parts. Super excited... I have one more purchase left though.. I need a new chair. Could anyone suggest a decent gaming chair? Hoping to spend about 3k max

You can have my old chair for cheap

@johncgalloway

The only real benefits to nvme slots is for activity that requires high speed like VM's and video editing etc and they don't disable any regular sata slots. If lack the physical space for one more drive in a particularly meh chassis or whatever then m.2 (either sata or nvme) can be a great help.

In the end for most people like @ponder said it's more about options than speed.

Need some sound advice.
My current specs are:
i5 8600k oc to 4.8ghz
Asus ROG Maximus X Hero (Z370)
Asus Strix GTX 1070

I do believe I know the rational answer, I am contemplating upgrading my CPU to the i9 9900k and the GPU to RTX 2080 ti using my existing MB. The drawback is however that I am using a Samsung 55" 4K TV at 60hz on PC mode. I am fairly satisfied with the quality and fps I get in Simulation Games. Some of them is capped at 60 fps and some between 35 and 55 fps. I can not at this stage afford to buy a descent 144hz monitor. So given my current specs will it be worth my while to get the new cpu and/or the new GPU using the Samsung TV. My heart say yes, but my brains say a big NO.

Any advice will be appreciated.

What simulation games are you playing that requires such high end hardware?

Mostly, Flight Sim X, Farm Sim 19 (avg FPS is about 30), Euro Truck Sim 2, Assetto Corsa, The Hunter COTW. As mentioned, I can play all these games without any problems, hence my question.

A good monitor is a helluva lot cheaper than a 9900k or 2080Ti...I don't understand your dilemma.

Given the games you've mentioned, I'd look into a 27" 1440p IPS monitor (60hz).

Rather wait until you can both afford the 144hz or higher monitor and better CPU+GPU..... it makes no sense to buy piecemeal especially since you will need to sort out compatibility at the time of monitor purchase.

Without the monitor any current upgrade makes no sense, some games are ports and locked at 35FPS anyway btw.

Many monitors above the traditional 60Hz require stronger hardware to reach their ceiling, it's not a perfected technology yet and sometimes it just plain refuses to work properly. VR is the same.

Thanks for the advice so far. I agree, does not make sense having that GPU and CPU without a descent monitor/s. Before using the TV as my monitor, I used 2 x 32" and 1 x 27" monitor for my display, so going back to a single 27" ips monitor will also not work for me. Will rather save for 1 x 42" wide gaming monitor. Just needed some sound advice to convince me to scratch where it does not itch.

So my final build, thanks to @ponder for you suggestion on the GPU. I really appreciate it but this is what I'm gonna take:

Any more suggestions welcome, I'm open to anything :)

So my order was placed and payment cleared earlier today, now the waiting game begins. I can't wait anymore.

Edit: Swapper the cooler out, they didn't have the WD Blue HDD in stock, the keyboard and mouse combo also the Mobo was swapped as that was also out of stock

I would swap the 1660 for the 1660 super which performs like the ti.

I came to this same conclusion last night after watching reviews of the card online  :X3: I could face-palm myself through my head after seeing how well it performed. They had the 1660, super and the Ti next to me each other and the super ran cooler than both, frame rate was just 2-3 frames behind the Ti and used a bit less Vram. I'm gonma speak to Wootware tomorrow and see if I can change it

And it's only a R100 difference to what you paid.

Swapped the 1660 out for the super. Got a pleasant surprise when I found out I ordered too much fans as the case already comes with two that the credit from the extra fan would cover the premium of the super.

Super has the newer GDDR6 iirc, so has some decent headroom.

It's just now the question of waiting for it to be shipped. I can't contain my excitement any more. This after a couple of weeks being without a PC. Expect this thread to be flooded with me seeking advice on where and how get some of the games tbat I used to play (and newer ones of course) on my new system as I always stupidly just went and bought the physical copies:X3::crying:
