Please help me with a gaming build for my son. The last time I built a pc from scratch was probably about 10 years ago and I just had a look and realized how out of touch I am.

I have been putting money aside for his birthday next month and I hoped to have about R20k but things being what they are I only have about R12k. I can squeeze probably an extra 2 or 3 on my credit card if I have to.

He has a 23" monitor (plus an older 14" second screen), so thats will do for another few years. He has a keyboard and mouse as well, so its really just the box he needs.

His current pc is an old gen 2 i5 with 16gb of ram and an older gfx card. I may be able to re-use the case if I have to but I will have to get a new psu.

I just sold my i5 9600K with 16GB ram, 512GB SSD for R5500. Now I know its not new but if you get a graphics card for R6500 its a pretty decent setup. Is used bits an option? that rig ran very well for high end games. Its a pity GFX cards are so inflated

The CPU is a i5-2400 CPU @ 3.10GHz and GPU is a GTX 750ti

What do you think of the Sapphire rX-570?

Yep I can relate. Unfortunately GPUs are more than double the price.

Also had an i5 but think its a 4th generation.

Bought a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1660 Ti OC 6GB Graphics Card GPU and 650w PSU.

My son happy with his graphics.

That would be about R12 000.
Double the price I paid R4500 for my 1660ti and R7400 for the 2600 super beginning of last year.

I used an i5-2500 until last year. Had a RX570 8GB card on it and could play all the games I wanted to. Mainly Witcher 3 at that stage. The card is now in my Ryzen 1600AF PC and still working well on Far Cry 5.

So If I shuffle a few things and get some family to contribute I may be able to swing the following hardware.
It means he will have to use his existing case, but that's no train smash. He already has a 6tb HDD for storage so we will use that, as well as the optical drive. TBH I can't remember when last I even used my optical, never mind him.

I'm trying to decide on a motherboard for an AMD 5950X, the first problem I have is trying to figure out what chipset to go for.

I tried AMD's website and I'm still stuck on what chipset I should choose.

I have an Asus tuf gaming B550 Plus, coupled to a 5600x. It's been working great since February. I recently loaded Windows 11 and even that went smoothly

No GPU is good for 5 years.
Rather get the 10400F. The difference between the 10400 and 11400 isn't that big.

That motherboard only has single channel memory and the chipset is the cheapest of the cheap. Rather go for a B460 based board.

What PSU does he currently have?

Where do you even get ADATA memory? Just out of principle I would rather get Corsair or GSkill.
It seems like you have 2 x 16 GB = 32GB?
16GB is enough for modern games.

As for your earlier question, an RX 570 isnt the fastest around, but it's obviously better than he has.
I personally don't think anyone should go into debt for anything that isn't a house, car, or makes them money. He will be able to make games with an i5 2400 and an RX 570.

As for going into debt, I agree. I'm selling a few things here and there to make up the difference. I know its a lot to be spending but there are reasons to go bigger than usual this year. He has had to deal with quite a lot of big changes over the last two years and last year at this time we where in emergency mode so his birthday was low key on all fronts.
He's doing well and trying hard, so I'd really like to do something special.

As for going into debt, I agree. I'm selling a few things here and there to make up the difference. I know its a lot to be spending but there are reasons to go bigger than usual this year. He has had to deal with quite a lot of big changes over the last two years and last year at this time we where in emergency mode so his birthday was low key on all fronts.
He's doing well and trying hard, so I'd really like to do something special.
If you're using wootware maybe post a screenshot of your basket or something that list is a bit hectic.

I don't agree with the 10400 vs the 11400 not being such a big difference, the 11400 is faster than the 10600k in gaming and it brings DDR4 3200MHz and PCIe 4.0 support.

Agree with Soul, 11400F if you can.

I’d also consider a better CPU cooler, the Intel stock ones are crap.

From what I've seen, it's at most 10% difference in games. On average it's quite a bit less.

With a 3060 the difference will be much less pronounced and at R2500 vs R4000 I think that money is better spent elsewhere, especially on a tight budget.
If they are closer in price it will obviously change things.

I have an Asus tuf gaming B550 Plus, coupled to a 5600x. It's been working great since February. I recently loaded Windows 11 and even that went smoothly

I spent ages on AMD's website yesterday and did not find what I was looking for (despite using the site's search box and Google), this evening I again clicked on the link I posted earlier, used AMD's search box (again), and out pops this:


and a bit more detail:


A couple of minutes digesting that, and I now realise that I want an X570 motherboard for the 5950X CPU (that I have already purchased).

Before anyone asks, I decided not to go for Wootware's R9 custom build because the only option available to change was the graphics card, and for a start I want 2 * 32GB of DDR4, but there's no way of changing that on Wootware's site. I also have no intention of letting Windows control my hardware (100% Linux).

It seems like DDR4-3600 is the way to go, or DDR4-3200.

I'm not sure which direction to take as far as graphics cards are concerned (it's not for a gaming rig), price and availability will likely dictate, but I do have somewhat old FreeSync monitors. So maybe Radeon instead of NVidia?

Although I have survived without FreeSync until now (again it's not for gaming), I also have no idea if my old FreeSync monitors would even be supported.

Water cooler for the CPU, what should I avoid/consider there?

I don't give a pile of rat droppings about RGB on any fans, memory or other components (RGB lighting is annoying enough on keyboards and mice).

Any advice still welcome.

Thanks, I will investigate, more to educate myself and make an informed decision on graphics cards.
