I need an nvme drive.
SSD 980 or 970 Evo Pro? What’s DRAM for and why would I need it?
Is there any reason to go for a 980 Pro?

An Nve is definitely a worthwhile upgrade over a sata SSD, around 3 times the performance. You won't notice it on everything but something's move from being almost instant to damn well instant. If you don’t know why, then you’re never going to notice the difference, anyway, so just go for the cheaper one.
Also, why do you need an NVME over a regular SSD?
Edit: forgot to answer the other question. DRAM is system memory. Your PC can’t run without it.
DRAM in the SSD spec sheet means a RAM cache on the SSD. It improves performance quite significantly when writing.
I don't think it affects reading performance much or at all.

But there's not a huge price difference between SATA SSD And Nve so he may as well choose the futureproof option. We don’t know the use case anyway (especially as he’s considering using a 560ti in the same system), but the average person isn’t really going to notice the difference in boot/load times, so it’s not really worthwhile spending a significant amount more on something like a 980 Pro.

I'd always go with Samsung but in real world use there's not much difference between drives, longer warranty is longer warranty though..With a price difference of R100, which one would be best?
Spec wise it seems the Sabrent is a little better? The warranty on the Gigabyte TBW is much higher.

I got one of these a few months ago: https://www.wootware.co.za/seagate-...-2-2280-nvme-pci-e-4-0-solid-state-drive.htmlWith a price difference of R100, which one would be best?

I actually have SATA SSD's that outperform (4K random, which represents most general usage) the cheap NVME drives because of DRAM cache and/or better controllers. We don’t know the use case anyway (especially as he’s considering using a 560ti in the same system), but the average person isn’t really going to notice the difference in boot/load times, so it’s not really worthwhile spending a significant amount more on something like a 980 Pro.

How did they get that one right?Celerons are back! Might get one for my test rig. Test rig still stuck on 3rd gen![]()
