Damn that 6950xt is looking good!

Beastly, but like a couple of reviewers have said it’s a bit late in the game. Kind of like they’re trying to move old stock. Is it really worth dropping that much on a card now with the next generation imminent?

updated bios msi gl66, much better fps and gpu usage closer 90 to 100% gpu usage.

cpu running a bit better at 2.6 to 2.8ghz while gaming.

Will def get laptop cooler, its still toasty!

Ok found setting in bios that helped, switched to performane mode which really ramp up fans underload.

Dropped temps by a bit and gave me bit better fps overall.

Will still get laptop cooler and try and cool down cpu so that it can boost higher.

I was more specifically talking about undervolting the GPU with Afterburner, should see a significant drop in temperature helping you maintain a higher boost clock.

Ok let me try that.

Cpu def need undervolt, if could could keep that cool it would be able to give the gpu the juice it needs. As im only hovering around 80% gpu usage

Was looking at PC parts prices yesterday (haven't done so for many years). A few questions:

- Is DDR5 ram worth the price over DDR4 ram? Seems to be double the price or higher. If I were to build a system now, I'd go for 2x16GB DDR4 ram and spend the extra on a better GPU.

- What is the best value CPU for gaming? i5 used to be the best a while back but are the new ones still the best for gaming?

- I normally buy a GPU one tier below the best as that is usually best bang for buck and future proof for several years. That would be a 3070 now right?

I wont be building a PC for at least a year but just getting a feel for what's out there.

If you won't be doing this for a year, the DDR4 vs DDR5 thing will be be a moo point - AMD's DDR5 platform will be out by then and DDR4 will be moving into the legacy realm. The 3070 will probably be 4-5th tier down by then (and that's excluding the 4080 Ti and 4090 models) if it's still on the market.

Basically, a year from now your build will look very different from what you're seeing now - I'd not worry too much about the current hardware on the market.

I'm going to make some predictions, so whenever I talk about something in the future, it's probably wrong.

- By this time next year, you will want DDR5 and AMD will probably not offer AM5 motherboards with DDR4 support. You will be able to get decent speed and latency DDR5 sticks, and it will cost more than fast DDR4 sticks cost now.

- i5 (or its Ryzen 5 counterpart) was usually the best value, except for a short period in the 9000 series where 6c6t wasn't enough for some games and you really wanted an i7 (or Ryzen 5).
i5 12400 or 13400 will be best value gaming CPU, with the Ryzen 5 7600 a little faster and a bit more expensive.

- The 3060Ti is already a 1440p CPU, so I would say that for 1080p 144hz gaming a 4060Ti will be more than good enough. Except if you want to use Ray Tracing. Then it will be good enough for 60fps 1080p for a while.
By this time next year even more games will support it and even more will have decent performance with AMD as well.

I do hope they release at least some AM4/DDR4 APUs with RDNA2. Otherwise my B550 was a waste of money. Even A320s can run newer CPU/APU.

If you are looking to upgrade an old system, now is the time to buy DDR3. I paid R900 for 16GB last week.

Any advice for me...

I have an AMD A10-7850K that I want to upgrade...Been using it for last 8 years....
Power supply is mucking about and the HDD is quite old so I think its time...
Anyway...I dont have a great GPU...Just a 1650GTX...

Am looking at either a I3 - 10100F/10105F or a I3 - 12100F...
With a cheap mobo and decent RAM...I am leaning to the new 12th gen...specs on paper look good
I also aim for good mileage on a PC so this will have to last me till I leave in the next 5 years or less..

The price difference is about R1000 (thats for the mobo, CPU, RAM) ...
Just not sure which one to go...Any suggestions? Not a big gamer...bit of CS GO...I would like to get Flight Sim and possible have a go with Apex again...And run normal office apps....

And no...second hand is pointless...I see the second hand computer parts market is like the MTB bike parts market...people seem to think they are offering a moerse deal by selling things about R10 less than what I could buy them for brand new....
