Was looking at PC parts prices yesterday (haven't done so for many years). A few questions:
- Is DDR5 ram worth the price over DDR4 ram? Seems to be double the price or higher. If I were to build a system now, I'd go for 2x16GB DDR4 ram and spend the extra on a better GPU.
- What is the best value CPU for gaming? i5 used to be the best a while back but are the new ones still the best for gaming?
- I normally buy a GPU one tier below the best as that is usually best bang for buck and future proof for several years. That would be a 3070 now right?
I wont be building a PC for at least a year but just getting a feel for what's out there.
I'm going to make some predictions, so whenever I talk about something in the future, it's probably wrong.
- By this time next year, you will want DDR5 and AMD will probably not offer AM5 motherboards with DDR4 support. You will be able to get decent speed and latency DDR5 sticks, and it will cost more than fast DDR4 sticks cost now.
- i5 (or its Ryzen 5 counterpart) was usually the best value, except for a short period in the 9000 series where 6c6t wasn't enough for some games and you really wanted an i7 (or Ryzen 5).
i5 12400 or 13400 will be best value gaming CPU, with the Ryzen 5 7600 a little faster and a bit more expensive.
- The 3060Ti is already a 1440p CPU, so I would say that for 1080p 144hz gaming a 4060Ti will be more than good enough. Except if you want to use Ray Tracing. Then it will be good enough for 60fps 1080p for a while.
By this time next year even more games will support it and even more will have decent performance with AMD as well.
