So are Haswell CPUs no longer available new and now Skylake CPUs are the ones to go for now in terms of bang for buck?

Yes - i5 6500 for high-end gamers who don't overclock, 6600k for those who do want to overclock. For those on a budget, i3-6100 is solid and on an even tighter budget, the Pentium \ AMD starts to come into the picture.

I read somewhere that Intel is adding hyper-threading to the Kaby-Lake Pentium chips - that will make them more attractive to budget-conscious people who don't want to step into i3 price range.

No you can still buy haswell cpus. Unless you have an existing socket 1150 MB it does not really make sense to go down that road. If you have a socket 1150 MB you can still get i5 & i7 cpus at great prices http://www.gtxgaming.co.za/index.php?route=product/category&path=73 for example and there has not been much of a performance jump fro haswell to kabylake.

However if you are buying new mb & cpu then you would be better off with sky/kabylake.
 
Just to add in, Ryzen launches in March...no word on pricing yet but there will be 2 core, 4 core and 8 core models to choose from - APU and discrete processors. All unlocked which is neat.

AMD has reportedly begun sampling 4 core, 4 thread Ryzen CPUs . These new quad cores have multi-threading disabled and will be the company’s entry-level Ryzen processors set to take on Intel’s i5 and i3 chips on the desktop.

Thanks to some sleuthing from various readers, AMD has accidentally let the cat out of the bag with regards to the official Ryzen launch date. While they haven’t specifically given an exact date, the talk to be given by AMD at the annual Game Developer Conference (GDC) says the following:

And to think... I was going to give a perfectly fine chassis away...
I went for a Lian Li PC-C60 and used it for several years... until I decided that Lian LI is BS and reverted back to the best chassis I ever owned...

The Cooler Master Sniper... :cry: Such a beaut... Cooler Master really thought about everything when designing this case.
I got me a can of spray paint and I will upload some pics tonight.

Yes, it's a TN panel, the IPS unit is about 5k more and honestly for gaming I don't think that proposition is worth it.

Price is around R10700, premium price is for 144Hz and Free Sync plus it's a 1440p panel.

There is an Acer monitor which has similar specs for quite a bit cheaper (http://www.wootware.co.za/acer-xg27...ptive-sync-free-sync-led-desktop-monitor.html) but it's missing some things I think are crucial (no height adjust, no vesa mount, no USB hub, less Free Sync range, etc).

The only thing I did see a lot of complaints about quality control with these monitors (smudges inside the panel, dead pixels in the middle of screen, vertical lines, etc), I hope Asus has sorted this out and I don't get a dud.

I do have the Dell but that's for my work PC (was paid for by work).

You actually have a very valid point as I've been thinking about this for a while as well.
If you are not a professional gamer, then why bother going all out? Is it a must to have the latest and greatest?

Is there a noticeable difference in what you see between the different types of panels though? Is the human eye fast enough to detect that?

Professional gamers (at least in competitive twitch shooters) prefer TN panels for their lower response times, in reality it's been shown that the real difference to fast IPS panels is imperceivable.

I just got the monitor a few minutes ago and testing it out quickly, glad to report I don't see any signs of defects on mine. Had to calibrate it a bit out of the box as the brightness was set way too high out the box but it really looks good compared to the old crappy Samsung monitor I had connected to this PC. Colours are definitely not as accurate as the Dell, you can notice the difference.

I'm honestly just not as blown away by the 144hz as I though I'd be, it's definitely an upgrade and playing Doom at 100+ FPS is really awesome just not mind blowing coming from a 60Hz panel (maybe I need to put them next to each other to really notice a big difference).

The FreeSync on the other hand is really great, everything is so smooth - using the Heaven benchmark really shows this off nicely. On the old monitor you get this very annoying judder on camera pans when the FPS is anything outside 60, now it's smooth as butter.

Anyway, I'm pretty happy with it and now I just need a faster GPU to power it :D

Any reason you are going with the 3GB 1060 instead of the 6GB?
