The PC Build Thread

So arsess broke into my house and stole all my sh*t. Good thing though is my rig was kind of begging for an upgrade anyhow. So here is the build I have in mind please advise..

(I already have a case, 1hdd, a few 120cm fans and a kickass 27" Acer monitor)

GTX 1070 (MSI)
B350 Mortar (MSI)
R7 1700x
240gb SSD
2tb Seagate Baracuda hdd
8gb ddr4 ram x 2
psu maybe a 750w?

Please note that the build is limited to one retailer as the insurance decided to use them to replace most of the pc -related goods. They are a bit more expensive than evetech and wootware but not excessively.

A 650W PSU will be more than enough, even a 550W is plenty.

Wrt the RAM make sure you get 3200MHz RAM that you can actually clock to that speed on the MB.

Who's the retailer?

Haven't built a PC in 6 years, so trying my best to catch up in terms of what's relevant. PC will be used for mainly for Lightroom/Photoshop/Premier and some light gaming (CS:GO, maybe some more recent FPS games). So far I've come up with:

Not bad at all for what you intend on using it for. Though, I wouldn't recommend that PSU. Go for the RMx range instead if you're sticking with Corsair. And if you're feeling the pinch because of the GPU, there are other brands and models for less that will do the same job.

Also, I guess you're keeping your old storage drives and using the SSD strictly for Windows and apps?

Thanks, I have to reason to stick with Corsair, I merely chose a cheap one :P I'll have a look at the RMx range then. What are your thoughts on CoolerMaster? I have some old storage drives yes, so the SSD is mainly for apps and Lightroom cache :crylaugh:

As far as GPU, I see I can at least save a bit if I go for the 1050ti, you think it's worth it?

I would rather have a smaller 144hz monitor then a bigger 60hz monitor. Everything feels faster on 144hz, it drives me nuts having to adjust between work and home monitors.

I would take the rx580 over a 1060 with the new clock speeds they seem to be 5-10% better depending on which brand you go with.

The reason for the monitor is that it's highly recommended in the photography/video editing circles. Otherwise I would've just gotten a cheapie :p

The RX580 isn't going to be able to provide 144hz in demanding games...I haven't checked on Freesync availability recently. Are there Freesync monitors available locally? What's the pricing like?

He is going to use the rig mostly for editing as far as I have it, and CASUAL csgo.
If he is going to use it for mainly gaming then sure get a 144hz sreen, otherwise if you play every now and again, and mainly edit then a bigger screen.

I would not even consider the 1060 yeah. Firstly, if you want to upgrade it won't be able to SLI.
Would definitely consider 580. These lower ends cards will however not last as long as you think with the current rate that games are progressing and evolving.

I have no idea my wife bought me one when she went to America in January. For me 144Hz monitor has made a huge difference.

If you're recommending AMD, I'd say RX480. It's cheaper (and prices will probably drop a bit more as suppliers try clear stock), doesn't use as much juice, and if you really want, can possibly be flashed to an RX580 anyway.

And the card should see him through the next 2-3 years if all he's doing is playing undemanding titles like CS:GO (you can get 100+ frames on a potato anyway). It still handles heavier games quite well at the moment.

Took me a while with using 144Hz to start noticing the difference, initially was very difficult to pick up any change from 60Hz but now I do notice how much better games feel at high refresh rates.
